  • One of my favorite creative works of all time. Ashita no Joe is the story of a working class kid who forges a place for himself in the world using his fists.

    the anime/manga that changed my life, the best piece of media I've ever watched and read, joe's character has had such a big impact on me I'll never forget him, the most human character I've seen, the most determined one, the deepest one, I can't put it into words, I'll just burn until nothing remains, just like my role model

      Same I feel the exact same way this man has motivated and ratted a part of me out that I never new I had and instead of oh it’s silly dream think of the dangers of it ma d every time I respond with a simple answer but deep down I know I’d rather love a short life doing a thing I love that I thought I would never love and die young with no regrets knowing I’ve accomplished everything I’ve wanted rather than going to easy route get an office job a family good money and on your death bed so many regrets and you die sad I will not let that happen no matter what.

    Throughout the entire series, not one character really "won". Not one character had their dream come true. Rikishi's dream was to beat Joe so that he could move on and become the featherweight world champion. He failed. Carlos's dream was to beat Jose Mendoza and become the new bantamweight world champion. He failed. Wolf's dream was to go on to the world stage and become the bantamweight champion as well. But after his fight with Joe, he failed. Nishi's dream was to box alongside with Joe. But after his wrist broke, he failed. Danpei's dream was to make Joe a world champion, but he also failed. Yoko dreamt of helping Rikishi's make his dream of becoming a champion come true, but she failed. Her dream was to then make a world champion in attempt to make sure Rikishi's death was meaningful. She failed however. While Jose Mendoza's dream isn't clear, it's best assume he only really wanted to defend his title as the world champ. In a scene where Jose and Yoko discuss punch drunkenness, he explains how he's seen great boxers, who are also his friends, succumb to it. Which is something he fears as without him, his family would lack a father and a husband. In a traditional nuclear family structure, Jose would be the man of the house. Most of the "important" responsibilities of his family would fall on him. But if he were to ever end up as Carlos, then he'd be unable to take care of those responsibilities. He would instead become a liability, useless almost. This could mean that Jose's true goal was to prevent the negative impacts of boxing for his family's sake. It may also explain why Jose was so brutal in the ring, having no problem crippling Carlos and killing Harold Gomez. Many characters have dreams, goals and aspirations that they never seem to accomplish in the end. The same is true in real life. A lot of people have goals and dreams that they never end up completing. But then there's Joe. Joe was never interested in becoming a world champion. In the beginning of the series, Joe only boxed because he wanted to prove he was stronger than Rikishi. But he couldn't prove it. Instead, he ended up killing the only person he felt really understood him. Joe then tried leaving boxing. His love for boxing was too strong however, so he instead kept boxing in an attempt to find the next "Rikishi" to fight and give him the same thrill Rikishi did. Joe's goal was to now burn bright, to enjoy life the only way he knew how; boxing until he felt satisfied. In the end, Joe finally got what he wanted. Joe got to fight the next Rikishi, Jose. And although he did die, he died peacefully. He died with a smile because even though his original goal of beating Rikishi never came true, he didn't quit on life. Joe's life didn't end when whatever his dream of truly beating Rikishi died. Joe had the ability to move on, and he did. He decided that he wasn't done boxing and fought for another goal. And in this new goal he succeeded wonderfully. So did Nishi when his goal became to live with Noriko as her husband. So did Wolf when his goal became to fix up his life. And hopefully so did Jose, Danpei and Yoko

      I also feel it important to point out how "gifted" a lot of these boxers were. Everyone in Japan thought Rikishi was gonna become a world champ. He was insanely strong for his weight class. Not to mention very skilled. He was practically destined to become one of the greats. Carlos was extremely smart, knowing how to act, deceive, and outskill fighters. He was the "uncrowned emperor" for a reason. Nishi was a giant, originally a natural heavyweight who towered over characters like Rikishi who was 5'11. He was a near 7 footer. Jose was a physical monster for his weight class, being able to crack skulls and kill people in a single punch. He WAS the champion who was never knocked down once. He even defeated a world famous lightweight boxer when he was 16 and smaller than a flyweight in ONE round. Wolf was also pretty gifted. He was the rookie bantamweight champion who was seemingly worth his salt. He was a bastard, but still went toe to toe against Joe until he used his triple cross counter. Yoko although not being really gifted, had money and influence. She definitely could have helped Rikishi become a world champion through helping him get fights and having sparring partners. Danpei had a lot of knowledge about boxing. Was Joe talented? Most definitely. Joe was a ring genius and a physical beast. He threw Nishi across a room, STARTING WITH HIS LEG. But he still probably wouldn't have gotten as far as he did if it weren't for Danpei's wisdom and cross counter. Danpei made Nishi a great boxer, and even Aoyama. He had what it took to create world class fighters. Bottom line, all of these people were special. On paper, they definitely could have achieved whatever their goals were because they were talented, gifted, or just rich. Still, neither of the people I've listed really get what they actually wanted. The same is true with IRL people like gifted kids. They're people who seemingly have a lot of potential. They're star athletes or geniuses who when they're young, seem like they're destined for the top. That is until you meet them 20 years later and find them in a bar, drunk because they either tore their ACL during a game super hard or just burnt themselves out. Being talented can only take you so far against the unfairness and cruelty of life. That's why a person should never seek to live solely for their dreams. They should also seek to enjoy life every single day. The road to the end is just as important as the end itself. Failing to finish your journey to that end doesn't mean you're done for either. It just means you can try again, or pursue another road with a different goal in mind

    My favorite anime series of all time period. None come close to such an impactful, personal and trascendental story such as this in the industry in my opinion. A criminally underrated diamond buried beneath most other works that were popularized because of trends. At the same time I'm kinda glad that this series is so hidden from the modern audiences making it so... "niche". Its legendary status is more than well-deserved. Megalo Box doesn't do this series justice, it needs to be experienced to its fullest to understand... understand why we will always remember Joe Forever.

      Honestly I think Megalo Box is great in its own right, it came at the perfect time for me, if it wasn’t for my curiosity of Megalo Box, I wouldn’t of found out it was a modern cyberpunk reimagining of Ashita no Joe. It pays homage but goes in its own direction, and changes the ending. They end up being 2 different Joe’s the original never overcame his traumas, and suffered the ultimate consequences”, by dealing with his problems alone almost his entire life, and never really moved on from it all.
      “Junk Dog” Joe actually wasn’t so abrasive to letting others into his life after he met danpe, in fact it was through him he learned to work with others, not good guys obviously like the cartel, but the kids that followed them along their journey really changed their lives for the better, he almost threw that all away, but after suffering in silence for 6 years, chief came into his life and showed him the right way home again, and was finally able to move on from his traumas, even survived his final fight, and opened up an orphanage from his old gym with miss shirato.
      I think Megalo Box is good to watch after Ashita no Joe, it shows the colossal difference in how far we’ve come in understanding mental health and just how important it is to have other humans you trust to keep you grounded in reality and not let yourself be in your own headspace too much.

    I'm Indonesian,in my country English is the third language,that's why my English is very bad like this comment 😂.But I watched this anime in English subtitles, this anime makes me want to learn English because I want to know more about Joe😂 ,Japanese is very difficult for me and English is an international language. Even I watched it with English subtitles, this anime touched my heart, how the character Joe, who was originally a street kid who didn't care about anything, became a person full of life philosophy. Ashita no Joe 2 one of the best anime I have ever watched, it doesn't have animation as good as JJK, or satisfying sounds like Jojo, but when I watch Jojo or JJK I didnt get the feeling I got when watching Ashita no Joe. I cried a lot while watching this anime, especially when Joe meets Carlos who is punch drunk, and the last scene of Joe. it's been a year since I finished the anime, I can't stop thinking about this series, this series makes me want to stop watching anime because I just found the best, in comparison with today's anime that prioritizes money over art, Ashita no Joe is much better. Animation, music, sound, ending, voice actors, plot, conclusion, this anime is just art.Masterpiece

    The Original Battle-Shounen still the Best Story that Japan produce

    • @candide1065
      @candide1065 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree that it's the best story that japan ever produced but I'm very skeptical about it's definition as shounen. That seems to be a common misconception among fans.
      People often seem to think that it's a mere boxing anime and shounen but in my opinion it's a seinen if anything, and the boxing stuff is just a motive of a character study about a lonely character in a opressive environment who is doomed from the beginning because he never learned to live a normal life in the first place.
      Anyway, thx for reading.

    • @teal6
      @teal6  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@candide1065 Thanks for your comment mate. I agree with you that Joe is a "doomed" character, but I've always interpreted his death in the ring as an act of ultimate rebellion and, at its core, an optimistic ending. He gives the gloves to Yoko not as an act of love but as if he is saying "look at what you have done", bringing the reality of her meddling in his, Rikiishi, Carlos and Jose's lives right to her face. He's saying "you might play with us like puppets but I still can shine brightly in the ring".
      Now his motives for boxing are certainly complex and I definitely do not believe he made it to that final fight out of anything like a passion for the sport. I do think that he went as far as he did because he was genuinely suicidal and saw it as meaningful to carry Carlos and Rikiishi forward. And I do think Joe held a special contempt (albeit tempered with respect for his strength) toward Jose, who (until the final scenes) was the only of the main boxers that was able to get that far without sacrificing, essentially, his life/health. But despite those muddied motivations, I do think that Joe thought of fighting as beautiful, a place where he could actualize himself that was "apart" from the world around him which hated him so deeply. There's a lot of troubled gender politics in the series but I've always liked AnJ's attitude toward masculinity, and while some think it is toxic overall, I do not agree, I think there is beauty in the idea of manliness that Joe (and Rikiishi) embody.

    I think many people mistook the reason for Joe's death and his statement of burning his fire to ash actually in the s1 episode 53 or 54 the last scene yoko said to him you have to man up and die in the ring as you are in debt of Wolf and Rikishi for destroying them this had Joe thinking and he came to Danpe and said he wants to stay for week and said no one knows for how many weeks and after that he visited Rikishi's grave and told him I am moving on for the last time and the reason he handed his gloves to Yoko to let her remind of what she've done.
