The gladiator stood still, shocked by who his opponent was. The sight of his brother, his friend, was enough to drown out the screams of the bloodthirsty, screaming crowd. "Kill the bastard! Slit his throat and drain his blood!" they shouted and screamed and begged. His brother looked to him, smiled a sad smile, and asked, "Will you do as they demand of you? Or will you stand by me this time," he reaches his hand out to the gladiator, his arm still and sure, "Brother?" The gladiator slowly unclenches the metal claw that has become his hand, put there by the crowd's desire, bound there by who he has become, and clenches that symbol of death and morbid transformation once more over his heart. "Even when these claws have gone to rust, no matter what comes our way, I will fight by your side, my brother." These heartfelt words stumble their muddled way past bloodied lips and a black mask to reach grateful ears. "Then let us start here, brother, and give them the bloodied arena they were hoping for." He draws his bow, oversized for any frame, nocks an arrow, and sends it as fast as lightning past the horrified crowd's faces, past the mountain of gold making its way through the stands, and into the Arena Master's heart.
"So you're finally here" he looked up, battered. Bruised, bleeding. Expending his precious last breaths on a single man. A man who needed to hear those words. "Here to see the deads? To save them? Or laugh because they refused to be like you" it was taking too much out of him. But- to hell with it, I'm dead anyway- he thought as the eyes narrowed and the forehead burned. "They chose death when it was offered. It was their fault. They fought a losing battle." His voice gurgled. "And you?" Blood oozed out from the cut cheeks. Red blood-filled eyes glued to the only man standing among the countless dead others. They terrified him. Made his hands shake. "Are you living now?" The dying man asked. "When you're child grows up what will you tell him? " where did his father came from? The country he had seen all his life or the one which doesn't exist anymore? The land which you destroyed. " Gods just give me a little more will. The old soldier prayed. "I JUST CHOSE TO PROTECT MY OWN!" "No, you chose...death...for them. " Finally, he met his eyes. And saw them tearing. "And now you carry...the memories. Now you pay...the which only you can..." He fell with a thud as a little dust flew in the air. The man stood there for hours. Until every last body was cleared. Until every single one of them burned on a pyre. His friends, his brothers. His teacher. His father. He never told the story of his home. No one cared after a few years. And his son didn't ask for it as the man said. But until he lived he carried them. Each and every one.
Part 17: A Bitter Taste The humans were always afraid when facing a foe like these daemons or the Rotstruck Host. Amenadiel felt disgusted by the fear of those around him now. The Adraxians reeked of fear, their every movement was defined by it. But in all this, he had to admit one thing. They kept going. He could at least tollerate them for that. No matter how afraid they were, how badly the odds were stacked against them, the Adraxian Storm Brigade did not break. And neither did he. Amenadiel was the very speartip of the charge. They were close now, close to where the Rotstruck Host had stationed their artillery and, more importantly, their command centre. The Lord of the Angels of Sanctity had smelled blood, and it had fed the rage that was already built up in him. He wanted victory, he wanted glory. He wanted to be the one to draw blood from the Rotstruck commanders. And now that they had the numbers, he unleashed that rage on his enemies in its fullest. The humans were good for that, at least. He cracked skulls with his fist, and used his hammer to leave nothing but bloody smears. His rage had already sprung over to his brothers, and even the humans seemed to forget their fear as they climbed over the rubble of the demolished walls. They were out for blood. Fahl tried to keep his rage in check, but it became increasingly harder to do so. He felt the coppery taste of blood in the back of his throat, just from simply watching the slaughter, and found that he wanted more of it. He saw one of his brothers tear a daemon in half without the help of even a knife, and he hungered for more. But he recognised that this was exactly what they had been doing for centuries. The Flaw that had led them here in the first place. As his mind slipped into a frenzy, he felt a pang of dissapointment for a moment, before all was replaced with the rage and the bloodlust. Vaxor inhaled for a moment, before looking over his Rotstruck Host again. Caldus was baying for blood "We still have the numbers to make them pay. We can still win this!" The Rotmarked was less enthousiastic about their situation "The first Adraxians have already pushed into our hq." he pointed towards the outer trenches they had erected "Are those not the Angels? Do not repeat your past mistakes my lord. Last time, it cost you your Armoured Fist and your Nobles." His pride and his guilt both stung at this last remark "That is exactly why we are here. To avenge them." "Avenging their deaths is a noble goal, but vengeance should not be blind, my lord!" the plaguecaster knew he had his lord's ear now "We should fall back, regroup and recoup our losses and then we can lead the charge towards the enemy's throat." Vaxor sighed as the first enemies reached him. They were nothing more than a pair of stragglers, surprised they even made it this far. He swept one away with his cleaver, and wrapped his armoured hand around the neck of the other one "Call the retreat. Telleport us out if you have to." The Rotmarked nodded, content with that answer "It will take but a few minutes." Vaxor cursed as he broke the human's neck "One day..." In his outburst of anger, he almost missed the movement in the corner of his eyes. As he turned his head, the shadows were moving. The High Executioner quite litterally sprung from the shadows. He had left his pet at the central approach to assist whoever was fighting there, and so he could move more freely. Now he could finally fulfill his purpose. Two plaguemarines fell dead at his feet. He saw Caldus reaching for his sword, but ignored it. That was not his target. His claws reached and would have sliced Vaxor's throat, if the Rotmarked had not forcefully pulled him back. As they both fell, Hadrian blocked a slash from Caldus and opened up the man's ribcage. It was a testament to the resilience of these tainted warriors that Caldus did not fall over. Instead, he pressed the attack. However, Hadrian had disappeared again. Another pang of pain in his back signalled to Caldus that the High Executioner had not given up just yet. Vaxor had regained his composure however, and struck at Hadrian with his cleaver, only barely missing as the High Executioner stepped back. Thall was good at what he did, and he knew it. His pistol sprung into his hand, and he placed two shots in Caldus' exposed ribcage. As they both detonated, the champion of the Rotstruck Host finally fell, though Hadrian noted to his dismay that the traitor was still breathing. The rotmarked now stepped in and fired a bolt of energy at the High Executioner. Hadrian spun past it and used the momentum for a strike at Vaxor's throat. The movement was precise, the timing perfect. The strike was lethal, even to the unnatural constitution of the master of the Rotstruck Host. Yet Hadrian Thall was denied his kill. In a flash of light, his foes were gone. They had retreated from the battlefield like cowards. Hadrian had failed in his task. With a single wordless scream, he cried his rage at the skies.

The Lord of the Angels of Sanctity had smelled blood, and it had fed the rage that was already built up in him. He wanted victory, he wanted glory. He wanted to be the one to draw blood from the Rotstruck commanders. And now that they had the numbers, he unleashed that rage on his enemies in its fullest. The humans were good for that, at least. He cracked skulls with his fist, and used his hammer to leave nothing but bloody smears. His rage had already sprung over to his brothers, and even the humans seemed to forget their fear as they climbed over the rubble of the demolished walls. They were out for blood.
Fahl tried to keep his rage in check, but it became increasingly harder to do so. He felt the coppery taste of blood in the back of his throat, just from simply watching the slaughter, and found that he wanted more of it. He saw one of his brothers tear a daemon in half without the help of even a knife, and he hungered for more. But he recognised that this was exactly what they had been doing for centuries. The Flaw that had led them here in the first place. As his mind slipped into a frenzy, he felt a pang of dissapointment for a moment, before all was replaced with the rage and the bloodlust.
Vaxor inhaled for a moment, before looking over his Rotstruck Host again. Caldus was baying for blood "We still have the numbers to make them pay. We can still win this!"
The Rotmarked was less enthousiastic about their situation "The first Adraxians have already pushed into our hq." he pointed towards the outer trenches they had erected "Are those not the Angels? Do not repeat your past mistakes my lord. Last time, it cost you your Armoured Fist and your Nobles."
His pride and his guilt both stung at this last remark "That is exactly why we are here. To avenge them."
"Avenging their deaths is a noble goal, but vengeance should not be blind, my lord!" the plaguecaster knew he had his lord's ear now "We should fall back, regroup and recoup our losses and then we can lead the charge towards the enemy's throat."
Vaxor sighed as the first enemies reached him. They were nothing more than a pair of stragglers, surprised they even made it this far. He swept one away with his cleaver, and wrapped his armoured hand around the neck of the other one "Call the retreat. Telleport us out if you have to."
The Rotmarked nodded, content with that answer "It will take but a few minutes."
Vaxor cursed as he broke the human's neck "One day..."
In his outburst of anger, he almost missed the movement in the corner of his eyes. As he turned his head, the shadows were moving.
The High Executioner quite litterally sprung from the shadows. He had left his pet at the central approach to assist whoever was fighting there, and so he could move more freely. Now he could finally fulfill his purpose. Two plaguemarines fell dead at his feet. He saw Caldus reaching for his sword, but ignored it. That was not his target. His claws reached and would have sliced Vaxor's throat, if the Rotmarked had not forcefully pulled him back. As they both fell, Hadrian blocked a slash from Caldus and opened up the man's ribcage. It was a testament to the resilience of these tainted warriors that Caldus did not fall over. Instead, he pressed the attack. However, Hadrian had disappeared again. Another pang of pain in his back signalled to Caldus that the High Executioner had not given up just yet. Vaxor had regained his composure however, and struck at Hadrian with his cleaver, only barely missing as the High Executioner stepped back. Thall was good at what he did, and he knew it. His pistol sprung into his hand, and he placed two shots in Caldus' exposed ribcage. As they both detonated, the champion of the Rotstruck Host finally fell, though Hadrian noted to his dismay that the traitor was still breathing. The rotmarked now stepped in and fired a bolt of energy at the High Executioner. Hadrian spun past it and used the momentum for a strike at Vaxor's throat. The movement was precise, the timing perfect. The strike was lethal, even to the unnatural constitution of the master of the Rotstruck Host. Yet Hadrian Thall was denied his kill. In a flash of light, his foes were gone. They had retreated from the battlefield like cowards. Hadrian had failed in his task. With a single wordless scream, he cried his rage at the skies.
