- I need some help with this one...
This is my first VHS rip on TH-cam, but it took quite a lot of effort. The cassette was in bad shape, so I tried multiple captures with different gear. But even my best capture was worse than a capture that was done from the same tape someone else did maybe 20 years (?) ago. So I thought about restoring it as best as I can using AviSynth & VirtualDub.
But is it worth all that effort? Not that the content isn't worth it (on the contrary), but maybe the program is preserved elsewhere in much better quality already. However I can't seem to find ANYTHING about this program. The broadcast is from the Swedish SVT (TV1 channel), but the program obviously isn't Swedish. To me the presenter sounds a bit Australian - or just British? If I could find the source or the title of this program, I could do some research and at least find out how rare and treasurable this item is. Please let me know in the comments if you have some suggestions.
Anyway, here is my capture setup:
Panasonic NV-FS200 - DataVideo TBC3000 - ATI600 USB
captured on Win7 using VirtualDub2 in FFV1 4:2:2 8bit.
For the restoration, I was oblivous on how to go about it, because of the combination of film artifacts and severe videotape deterioration. I started a thread on digitalFAQ, and user 'Keaton' helped me out a lot. Here is the discussion in question: www.digitalfaq...
So what you see here is the result of some AviSynth filtering (see script below) followed by 2 filters in VirtualDub (CCD and DFN VHS). Then exported using x264 with CFR=18. If there are any AviSynth or VapourSynth experts here who can see further improvement, I can send you the raw capture file.
Thanks for helping out. Here is the AviSynth script I used (thanks to 'Keaton'):

People who are not musicians can't have an idea of the level of this artist. As a pianist and a composer, I am amazed by KJ. And it lasts for 40 years for me !
Thank you. This is the first time i've ever heard him speak.
I've been listening to him since the 70s. And it's the first time I've heard him try to explain what he does, which is very hard to do. 🙏😏❤️
It breaks my heart that we won't hear Keith play again and he can't have that many years left before he leaves this world. But his legacy will go on. He changed my life, that's for sure
thanks for sharing, brilliant pianist Keith Jarrett!
Precious "My Song". Thank you Keith for you legacy to music in our time!
Brings back memories and makes me cry 🥲
Such an important document - it's been on YT for many years, and I think there might be a longer version with him walking around the garden in a tennis outfit...? Not sure, but thanks for the upload. The fact that My Song was originally an improvisation is a pretty good measure of his improvisational genius.....
Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to upload this! It’s a true gift for KJ fans.
Thank you, privileged to watch this from the greatest genius of piano improvisation in history
Chick Corea is not in this video
@@Jerry_England1 haha, touché! While a huge fan of Chick (who I met at the Grammys and be welcome to check my album in homage to him which got 3 Grammy Nominations th-cam.com/video/8QacSvsUYPA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=32h4E6pcf0qrAPYI&t=72 ) , the ability of Jarret to improvise from zero and create monumental pieces of music (unplayable technically for most of the classical pianists even if they practice them) is unparalleled in history. At least, since recording technique was invented (we read that Back was a total monster, and Beethoven as well, but unfortunately they did not record). Greegings.
This is a massively important piece of archive which is guaranteed to be great interest to many many jazz musicians and beyond!! You have done us a great service. The quality is very good for study/transcription etc Thank you so much for posting it.... and I hope it doesnt get taken down.
What I love about this is it is filmed old style documentary editing with long sequences of the camera on his hands. Significant that all the sequences except for 'My Song' show the outrageously funky unique style to Jarrett that you can hear at its peak inspiration on the solo album "Facing You" but to hear these snippets of this element of his piano style is a real treat of great interest. I would love to hear/see the original clips with no editing.
Though this may be a pipe dream as so many of those Southbank Shows were lost or considered not that worth keeping. Someone needs to go back and collect this treasure - your video Karel may be the only example of it, but let's hope it causes others with necessary access to get hold of the precious originals.
( I discovered 'Mourning of a Star' in the Holborn Library c.1974 and have been deeply influenced ever since. Heard him live for the first time at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London December 1977 and many times over the years at the Royal Festival Hall solo/trio).
I have no idea or expertise to share in reference to your request but I want to thank you for taking the time to do this and putting it up on TH-cam.
Thank you! Keith Jarrett and his fascinating grooves!
Ok funny but TH-cam's copyright algorithms identified the program when I uploaded it... It's an episode of "The South Bank Show" (broadcast June 17, 1979 on ITV says the internet)
Thank you, thank you so much for creating and sharing this great video document about the master Keith Jarrett. We hope that anybody would take it down on YT (we suffered it many times).
Thank you very much.
Beautiful man & music
❤

Thanks you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😅❤😅❤😅❤😅❤
man! another example of not knowing what you have until it's gone. Beautiful. as to the unwanted vocalizations comment, a lot of great musicians do this. it's totally unconscious and can't be helped. don't focus on it, it will fade into the background if you are listening to what is being played
Oscar Peterson Glenn Gould both hummed in the background.😊
In your description, when you write "However I can't seem to find ANYTHING about this program" - not sure if you mean _besides_ TH-cam, but there's an (old) upload of this clip already - video ID "a-kznTN66Ho". Might be worth commenting there or messaging the uploader directly.
*Edit:* oops - just saw you commented there already.
PS - as a Brit, the presenter definitely sounds English to me.
TACK ❣
I've noticed that some Swedes, Danes or Norwegians, if they've grown up speaking a lot of English, can have a British sound when speaking. Very pleasant. And I'll bet these same people know their "there, their, they're's", and "to and too's" and "then and than's" much better than the average Yank!
I hate watching him play, love listening though (long as i dont have to hear his goofy vocalizations)
