President Coolidge was an American luxury ocean liner and later a troopship that was completed in 1931. She was operated by the Dollar Steamship Lines until 1938, and then by the American President Lines until 1941. 2 mines sank her in Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides at the Espiritu Santo Naval Base, part of current-day Vanuatu. Those mines could've been laid by a Japanese submarine. It happened on October 26, 1942. The President Coolidge had a sister ship, the S.S. President Hoover, completed in 1930 and lost when she ran aground in a typhoon in 1937. 5,340 people survived the President Coolidge. Only 2 died. 440 out of 5,340 survivors were rescued by the U.S.S. Navajo (AT-64). The other survivors possibly went into the naval base. May Fireman Robert Reid and Captain Elwood Joseph Euart rest in peace.
