  • My Wife's First Solo Backpacking Trip! - Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop
This video is something completely different. And for good reason. I wasn't there. This is not my story. This is Tina's story.
Tina and I do not like to fail. We aren't experts. We aren't athletes. But we are competitive and we like to accomplish what we set out to do. So when we failed to complete the Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop last year, we naturally immediately started planning our second attempt.
But things don't work out as planned quite often, and due to injuries, I couldn't make it.
Tina decided to try it solo.
I know this isn't much of an undertaking to some. But for her, this was huge. Hell, for both of us, it already proved to be a big challenge. Despite the odds, she packed all the gear herself and set off for redemption.
This time, instead of coming in at the 'traditional' trailhead, Tina opted to try the west end, starting at Crested Butte. This is a better option for parking and lowers the crowds, as most people do Maroon Bells as a day trip for the photo op.
The video style is completely different than my usual, because this was her story and I wanted to try my best to tell it through her eyes.
So how did she do? I guess you'll have to watch and see.
Filmed on Gopro 8 & Canon EOS R
Music by Epidemic Sound (Songs & artists listed in video credits)

Tina is an "effin'" Rockstar! BIG hike for first solo! Who cares if she didn't complete that "juggernaut," that was indeed a serious back-country accomplishment! She did a great job with the camera as well...no easy task when you're hurting. Your editing and tracks are just remarkable. What a team you guys make! Let's get you healed up so we can look forward to seeing you hike this together.

She did awesome on the hike AND the filming. The editing was easy given the footage. We'll be back out really soon. Wish I could have done this one with her....Always next year.

This one was tough. Didn't realize at the time, but she was suffering from altitude sickness. It's a really good thing she bailed. Went back and completed the loop (she got altitude sickness and had to bail again). Having done it, I have no idea how she got over those passes feeling like she did.

That was an AMAZING video! Tina you are bonafide badsss and such an incredible inspiration! You did more on that trip then most people could ever dream of in a lifetime. Thanks for being so real and showing your trials and tribulations...I was definitely tearing up watching! As always the edits were impeccable and the music choices and transitions were beautiful! I love sharing your videos with others. If you 2 ever teach a class on hiking, camping, backpacking and video editing I would love to take them all!! Keep up the great work and hopefully Jerry heals up soon! You guys rock!!

      @JerryArizona  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks! I kept telling her "just film it, and I'll figure it out during the edit" but she did so well...The video clips just kind of led the way for me. Oh yeah, and she carried that 40+ lb pack up three 12,000 foot passes solo, so there's that. I'm healing up well and we'll be back out next weekend. With lighter packs and lower altitude, for sure.

...After watching this and reading the comments ,, it's hard to say what has not been said ,, except you have earned SO much RESPECT from those that have ever been on trail ...
Even as an experienced backpacker,, your first solo adventure is a monument,, you have learned the how-to ,, you have worked with the gear ,, your body is in shape to let the experience begin ,, then once you start ,, it becomes a mental game .. ..
I began hiking the Rockies almost 55 years ago ,, and love to hear the stories about the accomplishments of others FIRSTS ,, First hike,, first fish ,,first anything ....there's always the unknown ahead...
.. Since the TH-cam craze has come to be ,, now we can watch and feel these firsts with the emotion of being there ...
... Tina ,, Thank You for sharing your FIRST SOLO BACKPACK ADVENTURE !! ... You certainly have my respect as a mountain adventurer and as I see from your experiences on video's,, an awesome outdoors woman ...
..... Stay Safe and God Bless .....
    P.S. -- Jerry ,, You are a Very Lucky Man ...

Suffice it to say that I have hiked and climbed and paddled for the better part of five decades until I suffered a serious spine injury a few years back. Over those decades I became...not even intentionally...an ultralight freak. Yes, I'm one of those that cuts toothbrushes in half and then drills holes in the rest of it.
Yet I will NEVER hit the trail without certain things. Watching this video should explain why. Next time you order hiking/camping gear that you don't need and probably won't carry, some of it will undoubtedly be packaged in a zip top poly bag. Don't use a slider-type bag...they aren't waterproof. You want a bag at least 3' x 5" in size, but much larger than that is excess weight. You want as thick of a bag as you can find. An 8 mil is great. 6 mil is perfectly acceptable. 4 mil is okay and ai consider 3 mil an absolute minimum. Anything thinner than that will tear if you look at it with a mean expression. Into that bag put the following:
    1. Driver's license.
    2. Your health insurance ID card.
    3. If you are traveling outside of your native country your passport. If this is the case you may need a slightly larger bag.
    4. One check from your checking account, optional.
    5. 1 or 2 $20 bills or the equivalent in your currency. If you are in an "expensive" area more is advisable. I used to carry enough coins to use a pay telephone but they have all but disappeared in the US. On the other hand pay toilets are not uncommon and some coins are advisable if such creatures are common where you are going. Coins are heavy so keep them to a minimum.
    6. An index card with your name, who to contact in case of an emergency, your blood type, any known drug allergies, other allergies, existing medical conditions, and a list of any medicines you take.. Include trade and generic names if known and dosage. You may need to use more than one index card.
    7. If you are driving, a copy of your automobile insurance proof of insurance card including the name of your agent with contact number.
    8. If you are in a foreign country and have purchased a medical insurance policy rider or separate policy put that info in the bag. Likewise for medical evacuation or repatriation insurance.
    9. If you plan to hunt and kill fish, your fishing license(s). If you are hiking in an area where you stand a chance of becoming the principal component of bear dung and choose to arm yourself, any firearm or concealed carry permit(s).
    10. Last, a credit card. I had/have one just for this purpose and I don't use it for anything else. But note that if you don't use a card within a certain time period...usually 24 months, it may be cancelled. So make sure you use it every so often and simply pay it off at the end of the month. I know that many people despise even the thought of a credit card, but try renting a car after your wreck or getting a hotel room without one. Yes, you can carry your debit card but I recommend against it. If you maintain a large account balance you run the risk of losing it all if you lose the card, or worse, someone forces you to use it under duress to empty your account. On the other hand, if you maintain a minuscule balance, it really isn't worth carrying it in the first place. A possible alternative is a pre-paid debit card from a major bank. But again, make sure you transfer enough funds to rent a car for a few days or a room for a few nights. Be aware that a lot of these cards cannot be used outside of the US.
If at all possible keep this bag on your person, not in your pack. That's why God invented pockets. Resist the urge to store it with your telephone or other expensive items that would attract the attention of a thief.I keep mine with my maps and permit(s). I also keep a spare Jeep key in an empty pill bottle. If all this seems to be too onerous of a burden then leave a Clif or Luna bar at home (DON'T leave a Honey Stinger waffle though...they're just too good!).

    • @JerryArizona
      @JerryArizona  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good advice. I take most of those items you've listed. I think that's why Tina wasn't thinking about it since I usually had it covered and this was her first solo backpack.

I really appreciate your channel. Some youtubers are so busy thinking they're all that ,when Tina shows the reality that is backpacking and heavy pack with altitude sickness! The public need the reality of doing these type of trips and that they need to take them more seriously than they do. Tina was fantastic for attempting this trip solo cause it does take courage to get out there and love the outdoors, with the reality of it's challenges and the need to prepare both physically and logistically for these trips

Amazing! Amazing! Laughed and teared up with you, Tina. Thanks so much for the honest and vulnerable account of your adventure. As my wife doesn't accompany me on my trips I relate to what Tina says about sharing the experience with another. Photos and video never capture the grandeur and spatial relationships of the landscape, and something is lost when trying to describe it. Having someone with you to share it with seems to make it more special. Plus, having someone to share the "chores" with helps with motivation to get moving. That being said, the views Tina captured were fantastic! Congratulations on a successful trek! You braved a lot of challenges. Also, great job editing this piece, Jerry. I've worked in television and film for 50 years and I know how much work and creativity it takes. Great attention to detail, mood and story telling.

What an empowering video❤. As I sit here in the spring sun shining on me on the couch, I am recalling my younger adventures in hiking. I remember the exhaustion and the stomach churning push to make it to the next pass and the knee throbbing ache of the downhill that inevitably follows. The worst was when I hiked the Wind River with my 8month old son on my back…I made it, he is now 52 🤗. I loved it.

Tina is such a badass! 90% of the hiking and some of the backpacking I have done in my life, I did alone. More than once, I had a fearful freaked out cry on the trail. Tina can do far more than I could when I was in the best shape of my life, when I was 20. You rule, Tina.

I love this video, because it is so real. Tina going out of her comfort zone, and facing some fears, and some tough conditions, alone. She did great, considering she was not feeling well, and made good decisions to change the plan. Sorry to hear Jerry was injured. But all of this is what life is about. What defines us is how we handle adversity. Life knocks everyone down at some point. Those are the opportunities to grow, and develop character. Tina, you did a good job filming, and you did a great job toughing it out on the trail.

@@JerryArizona Well, I hope you recover fully. As for the elevation gain thing, it is hard, and maybe it is just not for everyone. I never gave it much thought, I think because I was a distance runner in high school, so I was used to pushing myself to limits of pain and endurance. In fact I kind of like it in a sick sort of sadistic way. Anyway, I really do enjoy your videos, and wish you well. A nice video Tina. Sorry you took ill. Both of you need to prepare for such things out on the trail. Take along something to settle your stomach when needed. When in or near a town, order a BLT at an eating place. I have found it helps settle your stomach, no matter what the problem is. I like a BLT in any case. But it has never failed to solve a stomach problem and get some needed food in me. Too, I know it was your first hike alone, but you seemed unsure of yourself. Hey! You are the one in charge in such cases. Stay positive, you can do it. Quit keeping track of how much more there is ahead of you. Just enjoy where you are and push on. Try to go farther each day than you planned. That way towards the end you will have less distance to do when you are warn out. I wish you both Happy Trails!
