I'm actually surprised no one interpreted it as the girl humiliating the pig and the pig eating her as revenge. Hence why the final time the pig comes out It's holding It's belly, and it seems heavier than before, and why It's laughing menacingly.

The pig costume has moving ears, moving eyes, independently moving eyelids, a laughing face, a moving mouth, a moving nose and a moving tongue. All controlled by either the right or left hand. How this actor is able to shift between everything and really bring the pig to live is amazing. This is very much ahead of its time.
The fact this footage was made a couple of years before the Titanic disaster and WW1 is incredible. TH-cam truly is the closest we have to a time machine

You can see a sort of lump in the throat when the tongue comes out, probably the actor's hand and/or elbow. It's cool and all, but...that must be really cramped and require some quick working.

That costume is EXTREMELY impressive for 1907. I mean, even decades later when Disneyland first opened, those mascot costumes absolutely paled in comparison.

This is supposed to be a special effect for a movie and not a "mascot for kids". You could compare it to robots or CGI. Also: Please stop comparing everything with the USA. It was pretty much of its time for European/French standards.
Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. It's just that in my own personal experience, one does not expect to see something of this caliber from so long ago. Obviously, I have a limited perspective as an American with little theatrical exposure. In America, I think many people see something like this and compare it to mascot costumes because of their cultural fame. I would be interested in seeing more examples of work like this if anyone has any recommendations.
1907, the wright brothers were still figuring out flight, 2 years before the titanic began construction, no world wars yet, 20 some years before the stock market crash, people that fought in the civil war saw this, Lincoln wasn't even on the penny yet, no one had been to the north pole, no automobiles yet, I could go on but suffice to say the world as we know it did not exist yet so it's nice that things like this have been preserved and put out for the world to see, thank you for posting.

The actor or actress in the pig costume had amazing coordination considering how big and bulky it was. I have enough trouble dancing in heels sometimes, so respect!
Literally one of the weirdest things Ive sat through. But it's interesting, it shows 114 year old animatronics. Whilst creepy, it's wonderful to see something so old.
For a costume made in 1907, it has an impressive range of motion. Mind you, everything within that suit has to be manipulated by hand. There wasn’t any of the special hydraulic or electric systems used in modern suits when this was made. As for it looking “creepy,” that was a part of the intention of suit. After all, it’s meant to be a pig and pigs aren’t known for being “beautiful” creatures. Within the context of the film, this element is further expanded upon by showing the pig in question trying to impress a woman, but coming off as, well, a _pig_ in the process.
The sharp teeth make it look more menacing. Also the way it rapidly rolls its eyes like it’s possessed around 3:50 right after the freaky tongue came flailing out of its jaws is what made it extra creepy. Plus at the end when they are showing all the functions it can do, it rolls its eyes back in its head, making it look dead. I mean dont get me wrong, it was indeed a very impressive costume for the time period, but that doesn’t change the more disturbing looking aspects.

It has occured to me only in a combination of terror and fear (2 exceptions), sometimes things I've never been able to forget from my earliest childhood. However it becomes more rare the older I get (~1/year) but the description fits me like a glove (sorry for my English).

I like it, the pig is cartoonish but has these realistic touches, like the hair on its head and the ears and the stitching on the skin..I like that it’s not all smoothed over like a Disney character or mascot..also the girl is such a great dancer and her costume and the “set” are so charming
And people say special effects in movies nowadays are awesome? Look at this. This is in 1907. This is more than 100 years old, and it's one of the most visually impressive movies I've ever seen. The best part is everything you see is actually right there in front of you. There's no CGI, or anything like that. It's all natural. Even though it's a little strange, I think "The Dancing Pig" is a great silent film.

I can't imagine the hell the person in the pig suit is going through back when suits were made with such "quality". No doubt very thick with ventilation not a concern when designing it.. only looking life like was probably the priority. Add in no air conditioners or heating invented yet and likely having to rehearse this several times in a row a day for hours straight. And hoping unlike the makeup in the wizard of oz the costume wasn't made of an unknown hazardous material in the paint like lead or absestos used in the outfit that would catch up to the performer later in life. Whoever was in that suit... I can only begin to appreciate all you went through to make this. Glad this video survived. Bravo
well there is a sizable hole in the top of the head. The pig's top hat accidentally falls to the side and reveals it a bit before it wears the female costume. Maybe the hole has another use, but it is at least a little bit of ventilation.

What's crazy is most of the things we film today is on digital and not film . What would happen if the internet would go poof or if hard drives don't last 100+ years . This makes me want to start recording things on film so future generations can find it . All it would take is a small solar flare from the sun to wipe out all digital media while everything on film would still exist .
Very interesting. I like to think what became of the people in these old films and what their life was like near the end when they passed away and think on their accomplishments.
I don't find anything disturbing here...I just find here a way huge creativity and marvelous how the pig costume was made, all a master piece...like a way perfect mix of costume and animatronics for that year 1907!!!! Also the dancing pig motivates lots of empathy and sympathy!!
The pig ate the woman, evidenced by it going loopy with rolling eyes and a wagging tongue before leaving the stage with her and coming back alone, shamefully rubbing a much more swollen belly (yes, pigs have and will eat humans). Kind of interesting how you missed (or overlooked) that, though.
My grandfather was born 1919 and grandmother 1921. It's so lovely seeing what life was before he was born. How advanced the pig costume was considering the time this was made. These actors and the person cleaning up the mess brought back to life. Looks so happy!
My great grandparents on my mother's side were born in 1917 and 1918. It's crazy to think of all the things that happened and that were invented in their lifetime, my great grandfather at least. He made it to 2007, and I recently lost my grandfather, his son, as well. They were great men, different from many of us today.
My maternal grandparents were both born in 1901 and paternal in 1914 and 1919. I wish I could chat with them all now but the last one died back in 2007.
@@davidetienne9404 I think that it has been decayed or destructed. This was made in before the wars in France so there has been some higher priorities for people than to take care some theatre props.
The facial expressions on the pig costume are amazing. The moving eyes and snarling lips. This was in 1907 without our modern animatronics and remote controls. The dancer in the costume has to do it all themselves manually (hence the arms and face rarely move at the same time.) The puppeteering is as impressive as the technology. Yeah the pig looks creepy and uncanny valley - especially with those human like eyes - but that's not a bad thing at all.
Usually I get creeped out pretty bad by mascots and the like but I was so focused on the sad story it never crossed my mind. The close up shot at the end really showed how impressive the pig costume was. Plus I'm always moved by films from the distant past. All the people involved with this are gone now.
I feel so identified with your two last sentences. I really would like to go back then and to live at least one year in that epoch (obviously with a good economic situation, otherwise, no thanks!)
@@RiceStranger It was a sci-fi show with completely unrelated stories each week. (late 1950s) You've no doubt seen it referred to in various TV & film. Here's a couple examples. I used all caps to indicate the episode titles: Guy with thick glasses just wants to have TIME ENOUGH TO READ. This gets him in trouble with his wife and his job. On his lunch break, at the bank where he works, he goes into the open vault to read. Nuclear holocaust happens! He comes out from the vault, the only one alive. He's OK with found can goods and stuff, but the loneliness gets to him. On the verge of "self deletion", he discovers the bombed out library. He stacks up all the books, joyful that he now has time enough to read. He drops one of the books. As he bends over to pick it up, his glasses fall from his face, shattering the glass, making reading impossible. Another one: "Benevolent" aliens come to earth to help mankind. Their philosophy is a book translated as, "TO SERVE MAN". Our scientists manage to translate more of the book. Turns out it's a cookbook.

I think there's two people inside that costume! most likely one standing normally and the other is hanging on his back controlling the eyes and ears etc.
The story of the play unsettles me. I think all men have felt like the pig at some time in our lives. Trying to feel like something better than we are, and failing at it. And not just failing, but achieving the opposite - making people see us with contempt. This is obviously a big fear regarding interactions with women when looking for a partner, but could apply to many situations. I can think back to times when I was the pig, and how horrible it felt. Of course, there is a solution to this in real life: stop being the pig. It takes work, but it is NEVER impossible. In the happy ending to this story, the naked pig - clothes in tatters on the floor and hot tears streaming down his face - begins to pulls at his skin. He strains and pulls with all his might. It is massive struggle. Then... A rip. A growing tear. With a tremendous yank, the costume rips wide open to reveal.... A man. He casts aside the costume before looking around at the audience with an inscrutable look. A thinking look. He sees a door at the back of the theater - and with a purposeful walk, chin held high, he strolls through the audience and out the door. It closes quitely behind him. Where did he go? We don't know, and it's not important. All that's important is this - the man is no longer a pig and he is unafraid. The end.

Even in online too. Let me give you an example how this world works : I was in discord gaming community. There was a guy who would be considered as hunk for most women. He is a full on pervert. Send unsolicited dick pics and always being creepy with all the women and girls there. But alas , he looks good and has great body hence he is considered a suave guy with great humor. Given how short it is, and given the last few seconds of it, I wonder if was simply meant to be a demo of the tech involved in the costume, rather than an actual story, just to show off what it could do.
Most films of that time were around 5 mins long give or take a few mins. The last few seconds of the film were probably just what you describe. Though the rest of the film has a plot and is based off of an old vaudeville act.
Okay. My great grandfather played the piano for the silent films in Petoskey, Michigan. I’ll bet he watched this film as a seven year old and was inspired into that line of work. 🙂 I have no doubt.

Interesting because the sleep paralysis experience i had that freaked me out was of a pig. Its was a hovering fiesta style piggy bank with a big grin and eyes and the more i struggled to scream the more it would shake violently until i could finally get out a loud enough sound to get my spouse to come into the room. Clearly some humiliation kink lol. On a serious note the man in shot clearing the "stage" is a holdover from small-time theatre. You weren't supposed to take notice of him, and if you were used to that happening in stage productions (which the audience of this film would have been much more familiar with at the time) you wouldn't bat an eye and would be trained to 'not see him' like how most people don't notice the 'gorilla' in that famous clip. Also looked like a bit of a trip hazard

I wonder where that costume is now. Is it in a museum, landfill, storage or was it burned up and now is completely gone? I would really like to know if that costume is anywhere.
If it were to somehow still exist it would likely be unrecognizable and in poor shape unless it was preserved in a museum . More than likely it was used in a theatre show for a few times , fell apart and it's long gone .
Unfortunately the materials that were often used that we still use today in these types of costumes and special fx aren’t built to last and decompose quite quickly. But who knows maybe it was made of a different material, what do you think it looks to be made from?
the use of george macdowell’s second piano concerto here really gives this an ominous tone, whereas a more lighthearted piece would’ve completely changed how this feels.
Is this really 1907?!😧 It’s amazing how good the pig costume looks, and the crisp video show a lot of details. If this is what restoration can do to an old film, I would love to see a restoration version of Metropolis or Nosferatu.
That costume is genuinely well made! Imagine if that thing is lying around collecting dust somewhere. How much would it cost to restore if you even could? One thing is for certain. A restored version of this costume would cost a fortune! Hell, even a perfect recreation would cost an arm and a leg!
It probably suffered the same fate as a lot of these costumes, unfortunately- probably rotted away like the tmnt ones and at this point barely recognizable. (Makes good lore though...and with this film no doubt being public domain by now...)
This little number is so intoxicating and what I would call irresistibly creepy, as well as FAR ahead of its time. The pig costume EXTREMELY well put together with baffling technology (being 1907). And The ending was just so eerily PERFECT; so disturbing I LOVE it. This splendid example is why I am truly beginning to love the silent film industry of the early 20th century more and more.
I find it easier to enjoy if one stops comparing it to modern cinematography. Silent films are as different from modern films as film is from live theater. They aren't the same and aren't supposed to be. Silent film is much more similar to vaudeville than what we now recognize as film which tbh I don't care for.

I figured it out: that pig is a Reptilian with a suit on. Only Serpents shoot their tongue out like that. Those teeth were real and the tongue was covered!

That costume is EXTREMELY impressive for 1907. I mean, even decades later when Disneyland first opened, those mascot costumes absolutely paled in comparison.

This is supposed to be a special effect for a movie and not a "mascot for kids". You could compare it to robots or CGI. Also: Please stop comparing everything with the USA. It was pretty much of its time for European/French standards.
Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. It's just that in my own personal experience, one does not expect to see something of this caliber from so long ago. Obviously, I have a limited perspective as an American with little theatrical exposure. In America, I think many people see something like this and compare it to mascot costumes because of their cultural fame. I would be interested in seeing more examples of work like this if anyone has any recommendations.

1907, the wright brothers were still figuring out flight, 2 years before the titanic began construction, no world wars yet, 20 some years before the stock market crash, people that fought in the civil war saw this, Lincoln wasn't even on the penny yet, no one had been to the north pole, no automobiles yet, I could go on but suffice to say the world as we know it did not exist yet so it's nice that things like this have been preserved and put out for the world to see, thank you for posting.

For a costume made in 1907, it has an impressive range of motion. Mind you, everything within that suit has to be manipulated by hand. There wasn’t any of the special hydraulic or electric systems used in modern suits when this was made.
As for it looking “creepy,” that was a part of the intention of suit. After all, it’s meant to be a pig and pigs aren’t known for being “beautiful” creatures. Within the context of the film, this element is further expanded upon by showing the pig in question trying to impress a woman, but coming off as, well, a _pig_ in the process.

The sharp teeth make it look more menacing. Also the way it rapidly rolls its eyes like it’s possessed around 3:50 right after the freaky tongue came flailing out of its jaws is what made it extra creepy. Plus at the end when they are showing all the functions it can do, it rolls its eyes back in its head, making it look dead. I mean dont get me wrong, it was indeed a very impressive costume for the time period, but that doesn’t change the more disturbing looking aspects.

It has occured to me only in a combination of terror and fear (2 exceptions), sometimes things I've never been able to forget from my earliest childhood. And people say special effects in movies nowadays are awesome? Look at this. This is in 1907. This is more than 100 years old, and it's one of the most visually impressive movies I've ever seen. The best part is everything you see is actually right there in front of you. There's no CGI, or anything like that. It's all natural. Even though it's a little strange, I think "The Dancing Pig" is a great silent film.

I can't imagine the hell the person in the pig suit is going through back when suits were made with such "quality". No doubt very thick with ventilation not a concern when designing it.. only looking life like was probably the priority. Add in no air conditioners or heating invented yet and likely having to rehearse this several times in a row a day for hours straight. And hoping unlike the makeup in the wizard of oz the costume wasn't made of an unknown hazardous material in the paint like lead or absestos used in the outfit that would catch up to the performer later in life. Whoever was in that suit... I can only begin to appreciate all you went through to make this. Glad this video survived. Bravo
well there is a sizable hole in the top of the head. The pig's top hat accidentally falls to the side and reveals it a bit before it wears the female costume. Maybe the hole has another use, but it is at least a little bit of ventilation.

I doubt these actors ever thought their audience wound extend a hundred years into the future, viewed from a space-age moving picture contraption.
What's crazy is most of the things we film today is on digital and not film . What would happen if the internet would go poof or if hard drives don't last 100+ years . This makes me want to start recording things on film so future generations can find it . All it would take is a small solar flare from the sun to wipe out all digital media while everything on film would still exist .

My great grandparents on my mother's side were born in 1917 and 1918. It's crazy to think of all the things that happened and that were invented in their lifetime, my great grandfather at least. He made it to 2007, and I recently lost my grandfather, his son, as well. They were great men, different from many of us today.
No distracting tech back then.
My maternal grandparents were both born in 1901 and paternal in 1914 and 1919. I wish I could chat with them all now but the last one died back in 2007.

The facial expressions on the pig costume are amazing. The moving eyes and snarling lips. This was in 1907 without our modern animatronics and remote controls. The dancer in the costume has to do it all themselves manually (hence the arms and face rarely move at the same time.) The puppeteering is as impressive as the technology.
Yeah the pig looks creepy and uncanny valley - especially with those human like eyes - but that's not a bad thing at all.

A greatly restored, colorized and mostover, upscaled, film. Despite the hilarious and eerie pig, the puppetteer with his pig had are amazing!
Usually I get creeped out pretty bad by mascots and the like but I was so focused on the sad story it never crossed my mind. The close up shot at the end really showed how impressive the pig costume was. Plus I'm always moved by films from the distant past. All the people involved with this are gone now.
I feel so identified with your two last sentences. I really would like to go back then and to live at least one year in that epoch (obviously with a good economic situation, otherwise, no thanks!)

On his lunch break, at the bank where he works, he goes into the open vault to read.
Nuclear holocaust happens!
He comes out from the vault, the only one alive. He's OK with found can goods and stuff, but the loneliness gets to him.
On the verge of "self deletion", he discovers the bombed out library. He stacks up all the books, joyful that he now has time enough to read.
He drops one of the books. As he bends over to pick it up, his glasses fall from his face, shattering the glass, making reading impossible.
Another one:
"Benevolent" aliens come to earth to help mankind. Their philosophy is a book translated as, "TO SERVE MAN".
Our scientists manage to translate more of the book. Turns out it's a cookbook.

Anything that was a "Moving Picture" was entertainment back then no matter how bizarre the subject and this was pretty bizarre.
I think there's two people inside that costume! most likely one standing normally and the other is hanging on his back controlling the eyes and ears etc.

The story of the play unsettles me. I think all men have felt like the pig at some time in our lives. Trying to feel like something better than we are, and failing at it. And not just failing, but achieving the opposite - making people see us with contempt. This is obviously a big fear regarding interactions with women when looking for a partner, but could apply to many situations. I can think back to times when I was the pig, and how horrible it felt.
Of course, there is a solution to this in real life: stop being the pig. It takes work, but it is NEVER impossible. In the happy ending to this story, the naked pig - clothes in tatters on the floor and hot tears streaming down his face - begins to pulls at his skin. He strains and pulls with all his might. It is massive struggle. Then... A rip. A growing tear. With a tremendous yank, the costume rips wide open to reveal.... A man. He casts aside the costume before looking around at the audience with an inscrutable look. A thinking look. He sees a door at the back of the theater - and with a purposeful walk, chin held high, he strolls through the audience and out the door. It closes quitely behind him.
Where did he go? We don't know, and it's not important. All that's important is this - the man is no longer a pig and he is unafraid. The end.

Let me give you an example how this world works :
I was in discord gaming community. There was a guy who would be considered as hunk for most women. He is a full on pervert. Send unsolicited dick pics and always being creepy with all the women and girls there. But alas , he looks good and has great body hence he is considered a suave guy with great humor. Not to mention the aftermath of such interaction is these women always ends up in his trap and they exchange nudes and sexy talks. What a pathetic world.
And I once approached a girl. While discussing something, I might have slipped a compliment to her and she was like....ewwww you dirty bastard, you pervert. I was deemed a pervert just because I look ugly. And my comment was not close to being creepy.
Did you get the point ? The concept of beauty is skewed. Its not at all fair. On top of that , most women nowadays thinks way too highly of themselves. They want ultra rich men having great body, good looks and so on. Trust me. And I guarantee you, you and most women would have done the same to me and at the same time would be overtly flirty with that handsome dude.

Given how short it is, and given the last few seconds of it, I wonder if was simply meant to be a demo of the tech involved in the costume, rather than an actual story, just to show off what it could do.
Most films of that time were around 5 mins long give or take a few mins. The last few seconds of the film were probably just what you describe. Though the rest of the film has a plot and is based off of an old vaudeville act.
This could have been a Nickelodeon I guess, some had racier stuff than this for that Nickel 👩💼🇺🇲🛠️🇷🇺

Interesting because the sleep paralysis experience i had that freaked me out was of a pig. Its was a hovering fiesta style piggy bank with a big grin and eyes and the more i struggled to scream the more it would shake violently until i could finally get out a loud enough sound to get my spouse to come into the room. Then it just faded away.

Some pig wants her attention and affection, she's not interested, until the pig dresses as a woman and then she dances with it and he gets turned on??? I just don't understand it lol. Can someone explain the plot. What IS weird is the guy clearly in shot clearing the floor!

Clearly some humiliation kink lol. On a serious note the man in shot clearing the "stage" is a holdover from small-time theatre. You weren't supposed to take notice of him, and if you were used to that happening in stage productions (which the audience of this film would have been much more familiar with at the time) you wouldn't bat an eye and would be trained to 'not see him' like how most people don't notice the 'gorilla' in that famous clip. Also looked like a bit of a trip hazard
Yeah like usually women are tired of men and find trans or gays attractive due to their lack of attraction towards females, but that's when so many straight men come into action, pretending to be gay, feminine and some might even go as far as becoming transgender, with the hormones & everything, just to get females, they're a lot lately, I can without a doubt argue it's the majority these days and no one is talking about it but they're hella confusing everyone cause they're MORE than us the real ones, and they're also making us look bad and destroying our reputation, I wish there was a way to stop them seriously

I love this pig 😂 firstly because it's so old it's like time traveling but also because it's done with so much handmade artistry. That alluring creepy factor of the almost human like features is irresistible to me kinda like animatronics 😍

I wonder where that costume is now. Is it in a museum, landfill, storage or was it burned up and now is completely gone? I would really like to know if that costume is anywhere.
If it were to somehow still exist it would likely be unrecognizable and in poor shape unless it was preserved in a museum . More than likely it was used in a theatre show for a few times , fell apart and it's long gone .
Unfortunately the materials that were often used that we still use today in these types of costumes and special fx aren’t built to last and decompose quite quickly. But who knows maybe it was made of a different material, what do you think it looks to be made from?

the use of george macdowell’s second piano concerto here really gives this an ominous tone, whereas a more lighthearted piece would’ve completely changed how this feels.
That's is an impressive costume, its almost Disney like quality, they have an amazing costume designer back in the 1907

Is this really 1907?!😧 It’s amazing how good the pig costume looks, and the crisp video show a lot of details. If this is what restoration can do to an old film, I would love to see a restoration version of Metropolis or Nosferatu.
This is golden right here, the Pig costume is amazing and very detailed over 110 years ago, imagine people in 2107 seeing this would be amazed by it
That costume is genuinely well made! Imagine if that thing is lying around collecting dust somewhere. How much would it cost to restore if you even could? One thing is for certain. A restored version of this costume would cost a fortune! Hell, even a perfect recreation would cost an arm and a leg!
It probably suffered the same fate as a lot of these costumes, unfortunately- probably rotted away like the tmnt ones and at this point barely recognizable. (Makes good lore though...and with this film no doubt being public domain by now...)

This little number is so intoxicating and what I would call irresistibly creepy, as well as FAR ahead of its time. The pig costume EXTREMELY well put together with baffling technology (being 1907). And The ending was just so eerily PERFECT; so disturbing I LOVE it. This splendid example is why I am truly beginning to love the silent film industry of the early 20th century more and more.
I find it easier to enjoy if one stops comparing it to modern cinematography. Silent films are as different from modern films as film is from live theater. They aren't the same and aren't supposed to be. Silent film is much more similar to vaudeville than what we now recognize as film which tbh I don't care for.
I still find it crazy this world doesn’t even exist anymore. I always wonder when I see there’s videos what their daily lives were like from their point of view
