    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

My father, Late Syam Sundar Chaudhury was a Sanskrit Pandit of 1950's. When I was 14 he would chant all these verses of Uponishads to me and would try to explain God as it is, as Uddalok to Shewtaketu. I was never interested but he would try. After a journey of 60 years of life now I feel how a father should be. After hearing Swami Swarbapriyanandji I recall him and recall one thing that my father did not attain the highest but achieved one thing in his life, he achieved to be free from Krodha and Dwesa (anger and jealousy). So it will take birth after birth to attain the highest and he will try to teach his son in every life. My father was my spiritual Guru in real sense but I could not recognise.

Not sure..but the if enlightenment is also Maya..then it's like a dream only..if u are realised then it's a sweet dream if u are engrossed in avidhya Maya then probably it's a horror dream. When u wake up both ends..so how does it matter if u observe Vidya or avidya Maya? when u wake up both of them end only doesn't matter whatever be the taste.(sweet/bitter/horror).so basically it seems to me for the first time that so much hoohoohaahaa about spirituality is not worth. Too much of Advait vedanta is also very depressing.

What matters is, at the end of it, are YOU ( rather I) freed from bondage ( to, body, mind, world ), suffering and worry, anxiety, birth and death, and have lasting contentment and peace, and do not have any sense of lack of anything, which you need to strive for ( you don't hanker after your dream objects, once you have got outside the appearance and illusions of the dream).
The reality of the pudding is in the eating.

@@ramakrishnanpanchapakesan299 Thank you so much for your reply..I so much agree with you. But after hearing this answer of Swami ji, let me try to put out once more: if striving for freedom also is Maya, and the final freedom(enlightenment) is also Maya. Then it doesn't matter if you were striving or not striving coz the Maya bubble is going to break at once. And then nothing matters. Because even the great avatars have lived with sadness and sufferings and disease at times (and they were well aware of them at that time), so we ordinary beings can't be spared. These things will come and pass with the influence of Maya. What Swami ji says over here is the pudding (that u have mentioned) is also maya so what are u actually eating when there is no pudding that exists?

    • @ramakrishnanpanchapakesan299

@@winteriscoming7493 While the illusion lasts, you are still in the sway of Maya. So you may strive , from within Maya, to get over the illusion, because through reasoning, luck, or Lectures, you Intuit or glimpse a peep into the Free, Not in Bondage, Not in illusion State. All the striving has a component of Maya, which still has its hold on you, though you may not be fully covered or immersed in it ( like striving to get out of a muddy Swamp).
And to say the Maya Bubble will anyway burst, with or without your striving (which is also at least somewhat within Maya) is Wrong. Unless the striving is there, and thereby one attempts to loosen Maya's grips, by at least intuiting that " YOU / I" is beyond Body, Mind etc., Maya on its own, will never release you from its grips, and the hold on you may only increase, in myriad forms.
While " snapping out of a dream" , may occur on its own, snapping out of Maya, needs effort or striving, within the realm of Maya ( hence named Vidya Maya).
Like an oft used analogy, you use a thorn to remove a thorn and then throw both thorns away.
On Waking up ALL THE REALITY SEEN AND EXPERIENCED IN DREAM, INCLUDING HAPPINESS, FEAR AND PAIN etc. are known to be unreal, illusory, and Never did Really Exist, so also when the last grip of Maya is shaken out and you are no longer in its grip ( like being in the midst/ grip of a dream, during dream experience), you realise that YOU/ I was the only True Reality all along, and were never Bound or Limited by anything, and Maya too is seen to be a Truly NonExistent Illusion.
The reference to the proof of the pudding, was to the realised experience. In that state, there is no hunger ( desire to have or consume or possess anything), so no eating or desire to eat. Yet you have Everything, and are always without Want. For YOU are ALL in ONE, and ONE in ALL.

@@ramakrishnanpanchapakesan299 the highest truth with respect to advait is that : nobody is in bondage, no sansaara exists, nobody practicing spiritual disciplines, there are no seekers, nobody wants liberation, nobody is enlightened..if bondage is not true then freedom is also not true. Liberation is also a part of Maya. Now all this appears very theoretical. Hence not acceptable. That's why I said too much of Advait becomes depressing. Now coming to concept of jivan muktas. Again that is very very rare concept, that of a jivan mukta, our holy scriptures have mentioned that even the avataras have experienced mental agonies and they were well aware of the same, but still experienced. Even Shree Ramakrishna suffered medical conditions and he was well aware of the same. Just saying that body is experiencing and not me..coz I am the Atman is again very theoretical. It just tells ok you have accepted the medical condition/ or the mental agony..which is good in a away, but incomplete and theoretical. Coz ur Atman is aware that body has problems. Coz of the body all the experiences are there even the Atman experience is there. If I say body dies and I will not die, I will be there, I was there..what does that mean? Do I mean of experiences that my I had or my I will have? So that's again very incomplete..coz I still desire to be there after this body, coz I knew I was there also. And those desires shall be fulfilled how ? Thru some more experiences ..in next birth. So how cum am I enlightened and free from birth and death cycle.

@@winteriscoming7493 A seeker of Truth or Reality has to go through four stages. First is Sravana, hearing the Truth ( ideally from a Living Guru in his presence). We are all at various stages of this Sravana only now.
Then comes Manana, when we have to cogitate on this and resolve all conflicting conceptions, through repetitively mulling over what was heard. This Manana is an individual's own effort and others can't help him much.
After one has through Manana, resolved conflicts in the concepts, one has to make constant efforts to achieve and stay in the Non Dual State, as an Experiential and not Theoretical knowledge. When this stage reaches its fulfilment, then one can be like Ramana, effortlessly and ceaselessly remain in the Advaitic State, and yet interact with the world and people, as a Jivan Muktha.
Since I am yet to reach even the Sravana stage, I cannot help resolve your queries or doubts, beyond a limit. A sincere and serious seeker is assured of getting timely guidance in this path. ( For Sravana, youtube listening is not the same as hearing from a Qualified Realised Guru; it may at the most, whet the intellectual appetite)

So, - “Is Self-Realization Also Maya? - It is !”
Swamiji frequently tells a story about the washerman and his donkey. One day he forgets the rope to tie the donkey, so he pretends to tie up the donkey, and the donkey thinks it is in bondage and stays still, not trying to escape. Then his washing done, he loads the donkey’s back with the wash clothes but the donkey won’t budge. He understood the problem and pretends to untie the donkey and it starts to walk with the washed load. I think we can connect it here…
Avidya maya is the wasehrman pretending to tie the donkey and Vidya maya is the washerman pretending to untie the donkey. Both together form Maya. Bondage has to be false for one to be free by getting knowledge. If the bondage was real, then knowledge will only be able to let you know you are in bondage, it cannot free you from the false bondage into the realization that you are ever free.

Intrigued, Nangaku asks him why? Basho, says he intends to polish it into a mirror. " mirror? but it's a tile, doesn't matter how much you do it, it'll never be a mirror! " To this Basho replies, " and how can sitting in meditation help you become a buddha? " Everyone is already awakened, the searching for awakening and the idea of awakening itself are all just Maya. A profound paradox.

Time (kal) is the ultimate maya. It forms the "closed circle mind" within which the jiva (kala) circles birth after birth (niyoti) due to false sense of knowledge (vidya) and emotions (raga) i.e. pancha konchuk. Meditation break down time to its most infinitesimal division crossing which the mind with all its stuff (emotion, intelligence, feeling etc which are nothing more than subtle vibrations and hence time bound) vanishes liberating the jiva.

The I consciousness (jiva) is intricately intertwined with the apparent external universe, both being formed simultaneously by different attributes of time (sense organs of the jiva and the five mahabhutas which is perceived by these as forming the external reality). That is why it is stressed that getting rid of the I is so very important in the process of realizing the true Self or Brahma. But it is not easy due to vikshep shakti (outward motion of energy during its workable manifestation) which keeps the infinitesimal divisions of time appear as continuous external world. Only powerful inward withdrawal with detachment from external world can gradually sever this falsely appearing continuum

Eventually as scanned through mind's wonderings and I stopped to investigate a thought: Maya is Brahman and Brahman is Maya. Namaste,
      if i may ... my 2-bits...
Maya is the inherent power of brahman, so one can say maya is brahman, but we cannot say brahman is maya. Brahman ‘as such’ is attributeless, thus 'powerless'. Maya is the power of brahman to appear as though with attributes. Maya power is name form and utility attributes that appear in brahman.
The analogy of clay and pot is used to bring out clarity.
Like clay and pot. Clay is attributeless, but the pot has name, form, and utility. Substantially, there is only clay, pot is an empty word signifying only name, form and utility of clay. Clay is independent existence. Pot is a dependent existence dependant on clay. Pot is, when and because clay is. Clay is, regardless of whether pot is or not (say broken). Wherever you touch on the pot is clay. The pot does not weigh even 1 gram more than the clay from which it is made. The form, name and utility has not added a single gram tto the weight of clay in the pot. I can show you a substance called clay, but I cannot show you a substance called either name or form or utility/ Name, form and Utility are empty words. Yet they are all clay. Clay is none of these.
It may seem circular, but it is not. It is not a free fall down a bottom less pit. You will hit ground and the ground is brahman.
Everything is deniable and denied, except thee ground on which the ‘things’ need to be grounded on.

Just like a thorn is used to remove another thorn and then both discarded, Vidhya Maya is used to remove Avidya Maya and both are discarded. Pranams .

Fun little summary but I think Swami skipped the "hard question of self realization", which was asked, namely what if all this "going beyond sentimentality, materiality etc" is just another level of sentimentality and materiality with it's own delusions, for example the delusion that all is Brahman. Almost like an atheist critique of religion "this is all just opium", but meta, next level post-realization atheism :)

This Realization comes not from senses, not from psychological condition. If everything falls in maya, then no talking about the removal of maya doesnot arise.
Please don't spread falls conceptions regarding this REALIZATION'. this is we the people who have now became too much dependent on you like swamijis. So try to do the best thing for everyone. Go for self realization please. Then what was maya and where you were.

I so much agree with you, there are some drawbacks of advait philosophy I feel, that's why bhakti is required to be pursued alongside Gyan. Only knowledge of advait makes u like the answer of swami was. Agree realisation if coming from senses then it's also an object.
If enlightenment is also Maya then it is also like a dream only. If one is realised then it's a sweet dream if one is engrossed in avidhya Maya then probably it's a horror dream . When you wake up both will end( end of this body), so how does it matter if u observe vidhya or avidhya Maya? When u wake up both will end so how does it matter whatever be the taste( sweet/bitter/horror) . It seems to me for the first time that so much of hohoohuhuhahaa about spirituality is not worth. Too much of Advait is depressing

And this implies the good states will also pass and is temporary too... while this seems depressing actually there is a peace there. I think at the end of the day we are not looking for good times and pleasure we are really wanting deep peace. We are not the happy or sad or dreadful states, we are the one who notices these passing states. This is the truth. Maya will pull you hard to get involved on the pleasures and dread of life.. try to stay in the truth. The awareness
      The peace
And your mind will slowly calm down and still like deep relaxation.

Whats the point of this self realization when the one (jiva) who needs to achieve it is itself a product of maya -- brahman/atman covered under specific mayic upadhis makes manifestation as jiva possible ? Brahman is in no need of this self realization. If jiva ceases to exist the moment self realization dawns then this self realization itself ceases to exist because the one who became realized itself does not exist anymore. Who has this self realization then and whats the point ?
Besides why in the first place would Brahman described as shudha chaitanya which has no relation to anyone, no desire etc (refer mandukya definition of Turiya and other similar statements in upanisads) ... get into the business of manifestation as diversity constituting of names and forms imposed on one indivisible absolute atman of nature of bliss, existence and consciousness via agency of maya ?
Is maya another real principle like Brahman ? Is maya Brahman under specific upadhis ? If maya is Brahman under specific upadhis, then what is the source/cause of those upadhis ? Also, what is real nature of that source then ? This will go into infinite regress. When pushed into corner in this way Advaitins say maya is sat asat vilakshan (neither real nor unreal) and it is anirvacinya (inconceivable). To people who use common sense and reason none of this makes sense. Hence most other acharyas have vehemently disagreed with Sri Sankara's advaita vedanta interpretation of Prashan traya.
