Usually you want to use the same weight category. You might be able to but you'll need to meet gauge. The gauge for this one in the Main Stitch Pattern and With larger hook is 2″/ 5 cm x 2″/ 5 cm = 8 sts x 6 rows in pattern. After you sc crochet around the ribbing do you turn it back inside out or did you just turn it after joining the rim of the hat?
Usually I join the ribbing on the wrong side and turn it then. Then when you sc around it's on the right side. I hope that helps!
