It's a bunch of geometry and Crystal dynamics, I grew up with one of the first books I started reading a geology book like how people read a Bible so I'm about that geology and I climb on boulders around that size so that sound he's making with each strike is due to the harmonic frequency, he's hitting a spot on the rock that makes it produce a audible sound like musical instruments also he's actually getting a piece of metal with a hammer which will make sound

It's weird the pitch went down and not up before it broke. When splitting stone by hand the pitch of the sound the mallet strike makes will change one swing before it splits. Typically the pitches rises in frequency or becomes a higher note in other words.

I am not a stone guy or anything near BUT the dull sound of those hits makes me feel the tension this stone has and how britle it is. You can literally hear and feel the spreading by each hit.
