I’ll never forget this day...My kids and I had to run downstairs to my neighbor’s house for shelter. The tornado passed right behind us, headed down Forestville Rd in Raleigh...CRAZY!

I was at Mission Valley, which is right by WRAL, I went into a closet at the theater. There were people in the lobby who wouldn't go into a closet. I remember one guy saying "we'll go if it comes this way", this was when WRAL had just said the tornado was near Centennial Campus.

I lived in Rolesville at the time, we cracked our windows as soon as our ears started popping and hid in our closet with our dogs. One of the scariest moments of my life, the homes on the next street were destroyed.

Just something you might find interesting, Scientists have said the open windows thing is a big myth and that you're putting yourself in more danger by doing that. Just something to think about.

They totally ignored the tornado warning (and tornado) that was already ripping through Fayetteville. Once the tornado hit Holly Springs, they got completely myopic and left Fayetteville in the dark. Sad.

+_Keith910_ For some reason they do it with Roxboro too. Roxboro has a population of 8,000 but any time there's a weather event, someone (usually Brian Mims) is in Roxboro and never Fayetteville, even though Fayatteville could have the same or worse conditions.

    • @KBJ910

Drive On! well to be honest, the Raleigh area is significantly more populated than Fayetteville. WRAL is really a Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill station, NOT SANDHILLS. Fayetteville has it's own news and weather channels. this storm also was forecast to go directly through downtown Raleigh, which it did and had history of decimating Lee County.

My father-in-law lived down around Apex not far off Ten Ten Road when this hit. It missed his trailer (yes, he stayed in his trailer even with the tornado warning) by about a hundred yards and ripped up the forest across the road from him. I was living in Durham and had no tornadoes but the squall was nasty and dropped a big branch across my truck's hood, no big deal compared to what so many other people had to deal with.

I remember this day very well as well. My sister's birthday party was that day, and we were playing outside, even as conditions got worse. It started to storm when my mom rushed everyone inside. I thought it was just a thunderstorm, but my mom saying there was a tornado afterwards. I also remember going down Tryon Rd. and seeing the damage as it had crossed over Tryon and damaged a house and some trees.

    • @sierratrilogy

That was moments before it hit S. Saunders and just barely missed completely taking out the Harley dealership (although building did suffer structural damage). It destroyed a car repair garage about a block down from the HD dealer, but I can't recall the name of the intersection road there.
My mom was near the Tryon/Kildare Farm Rd intersection, and my aunt and uncle were near Ten Ten and Penny Rd (near Graham Newton, Blaney Franks, Yates Mill Pond). I was in Wilmington, watching this unfold, and simultaneously worrying about my best friend, whose home in Clarkton got damaged by a storm that day.
I drove up the next morning (for what was supposed to be a regularly scheduled visit) and got to see the damage path from Tryon through S. Saunders.

Wow.I also was there and I just came off of a 3 day fast that morning. It was a sunny morning.I opened my balcony door and got on my laptop some time passed and all of a sudden it was hard for me to get air because the tornado was headed toward my area from downtown and sucking up the air yet I didn't know it yet. Then I noticed everything was very quiet no birds chirping. At that moment I thought in my mind something is wrong! It's to quiet and it seems humid like no air.For some reason I typed on Google Raleigh tornado watch. And all of a sudden it popped on my computer screen that a tornado touched down in Raleigh.I jumped up to look out my balcony door and I saw a high dark cloud coming toward the where I lived. And all of a sudden the wind picked up and stuff was flying.I struggled to close my balcony door and take cover.I said God help me! Finally got balcony door shut n only had time to make it to my hallway n brace myself n waited for the impact. And 2 minutes later I'm still braced against 2 walls and a I heard were sirens. The tornado tore up everything around my apt bld but didn't touch our apt bld.AMAZING!

Okay, so I've re-watched this I don't know how many times, and I'm still not totally convinced that what they were calling a lightning strike at 9:51ish isn't actually a power flash. 10:02 or thereabouts, also looks like a power flash.

There was the "Super Outbreak" of April 27th, 2011 that was centered over Mississippi and Alabama. NC got some tornadoes from that, albeit in the western part of the state. Look for "ABC 33/40 4-27-2011 Coverage" and it is archived on here. I suggest the "Waffle Iron Archives" version of the upload.
