      You could save the black lace from the black ruffles you cut out for future doll project, plus you should make your own doll size dollfairy spell books, Halloween spellbooks,
      & finally your favorite Disney Story books. That would be a fun activity to try. :) Dollightful has a video on how to make doll size books that'll help you. :)

    What an extravagant face up! I love it so much. 😍 Well, let's face it, the entire doll is extravagant! I loved the evolution of the mask from ninja turtle to Phantom of the Opera. That was great lol. Thank you so much for another amazing Halloween collaboration this year, Diana!

    Fun fact for those who don't know, the face of the phantom in the original novel was entirely scarred and disfigured. It's been a while since i read the book, but from what i remember, his face was described as essentially just a skull with a layer of (red?) skin over it, and his mask covered his entire face. I imagine they changed that to the half mask we know from the musical either bc a.) easier for the actor to sing b.) easier for the actor to portray facial emotions c.) to give the phantom more appeal to audience (maybe???)

    • @random_dragon
      @random_dragon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      His face is described as being like a skull with thin yellow skin pulled tight over it!
      Even the 1925 silent film only uses a half mask, but it likely has to do with the cover on the book not showing the full mask

      Like yellow parchment is his skin. A great black hole serves as the nose that never grew- Joseph Bouquet from the musical

    • @SALshaNoma
      @SALshaNoma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      yes the actor could not sing with the full mas and there by it had to be cut to half

    • @holyalpaca750
      @holyalpaca750 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, for reasons a and b (mostly a) the mask covers less than half of the face in the musical. As I know, they at first only wanted to cut the bottom part of the mask off, but even then it was still hard for the actor to sing so they removed the left half as well.

    • @LunaWitcher
      @LunaWitcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They had to modify the mask in the musical; the mask from the cover image for the musical is not the mask used. It was less because they couldn't hear him, and more because they couldn't understand what he was saying (enunciation is very important in musicals) even when the mask was only covering the top half of his face. They changed it to be more open and everything was fine after lol
      Singing really involves your whole body, and when you're singing live and loud, the sound resonates very much through your nose and cheekbones as well. That probably had something to do with why they couldn't quite understand what he was singing with the previous mask.

  • @anisevandonk6376
    @anisevandonk6376 3 ปีที่แล้ว +114

    Fun Fact: the reason The Phantom has a half mask, instead of a full mask was because of a technical issue. The face prosthetics and the full mask clashed with Micheal Crawford's microphone, so they changed it to half his face. You can see that this was a last minute change because the poster art features the full mask. :)

    I became Phantom obsessed as a teenager…so much so my dad took me to NYC to see Phantom on Broadway when I graduated from high school. (I refuse to admit how many years ago 😂) You did an amazing job!!
    Side note: the Phantom dressing as “Red Death” for the masquerade was a direct reference to Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death”. Prince Prospero bring s 1000 of his knights, nobles, etc. into the castle and welds the doors shut to avoid the plague. He holds a masquerade, and someone attends wearing a “Red Death” costume, but is ultimately revealed to be the plague they tried to escape.
    Eric chooses to represent himself as literally Death coming to call as the Opera company have ignored previous demands and to scare them into compliance. Poe’s work likely symbolized tuberculosis, and was published in 1842. Andrew Lloyd-Weber likely chose an iconic men’s look from history (Henry VIII) to reference the bubonic plague, but that took place 160ish years before he took the throne.m

    Did you know the Masque of the red death is a story by Edgar Allan Poe?
    It is a tale about a land plagued by "the red death" a horrible disease. Durring this a prince locks himself away in his castle and throws a wild masquerade party thinking he was safe inside the castle walls. As the story progessess we are taken thru seven rooms symoblizing ones progression thru life. By the end of the story A figure cloaked in red apears and makes there way thru the seven rooms to the prince. The prince atempts to attack the figure but is quickly killed followed by the rest of the party go-ers. "And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel" symbolizing the unstopping march of death.
    Just a little spooky english lession, you should absolutely go read Poe's story, its only natural he would tell it better then me. Wonderful doll! She is absolutely beautiful! Happy halloween to all!

      I almost commented this myself. The Mask of the Red Death is my favorite of his works followed closely by the Telltale Heart. I always found the Res Death to be fascinating, especially viewing the idea of the party as people not having death on the forefront of their mind/blissfully ignorant of it only for death to be in front of them "at their door" showing them they are truly aren't different in the eyes of death. While it comes for us all at different times in different manners, we are all still pursued just the same.

    I just read the phantom of the Oprah. Interestingly (and what most people might not know if they haven’t read the book,) Eric (the name the Phantom goes by,) was actually a real person, and a genius. He was a builder (well the son of a builder so he learned the craft.) and when he went to Paris he became one of the builders of the Paris Oprah: he built not only countless trap doors (he was known as “The Lover of Trapdoors” in Persia, where he lived for a long time and learned to be a master with the Garott and an amazing Vantrilequist-sorry can’t spell that-) but secret passages and a whole house for himself besides the underground lake. There he became “and the Phantom of The Oprah” and cheated the managers out of lots and lots of money every month. I also want to say that Christine was Blond. And blue eyed. She was Scandinavian, and being blond and blue eyed (and sweet and innocent etc etc argggggg) was a very important part of her character, and she was only a singer, not a dancer. Anyways, a very very interesting book. I definitely suggest reading it. Wonderfully written. The Persian Guy is my Favorite Character, plus the Hero-or at least and most definitely the coolest character. (Well Christines kindness was the hero actually, but I know from the beginning Raul could NEVER be the hero, and i was right.) anyway. Cool idea for a doll. Happy Halloween/October!! 🎃🐾♥️

    i love how you did her "deformity". The design itself is very beautiful and symbolic, but placed on her face like that it looks unsettling, dehumanizing, and almost ugly. It captures the phantom's anguish of having a striking feature that makes him an outcast while also putting a unique artistic spin on it. as a phantom enjoyer, i really love your work!!

    BRAVA! BRAVA!! BRAVISSIMA!!! This doll is an absolute MASTERPIECE!!! I first saw the movie in my 6th grade music class, when my older cousin was still teaching. I loved it SO MUCH I make it a point to watch it at least once a year! The Masquerade scene is my absolute favorite part, and your work truly embodies everything that makes up the atmosphere of it in its entirety!!! If you ever travel to NYC and get to see the show, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF BROADWAY, make sure you bring this doll with you for a photo shoot and see if you can get the cast to sign the tiny music score for you!!!! You have made me so happy to be a Phantom Fan, and I'm sure even Andrew Lloyd Webber would be proud of this doll!!🎭👻👏👏👏❣💌

    I love the end result, Phantom was the first real play I ever saw when it was presenting in Toronto's Pantages Theater where it ran for a decade. It was there so long I would swear that they advertised it as the Phantages because the two were just so synonymous. It just has such strong memories for me especially the Grand Mascarade set piece. It was just so big, until that point the largest story I had ever seen were movies on the screen which unless you just the right sound system were just pale imitations of the shear weight of a full orchestra and choir.
    You are right there is definite disconnect between the "modern" fashion Christine wears and the Masque of the Red Death costume. The play the Phantom was writing was a sequel to a play that was written in the early 1600's and was probably based on an even older piece, which The Phantom used as a self insert piece to make up for having to live in the shadows all his life. I'd bet that the actual costume The Phantom wore was made up fabrics stolen from past productions of the opera house old heavy brocades and curtains dyed red that he had stolen over time to try and make this grand costume for his Don Juan who was supposed to be a renaissance era gentleman from southern Spain. Old, heavy, probably musty fabrics wore by an angry man that lives in the sewers must have made for a heck of entrance to the gala.

    I received some comments on my Phantom of the Opera video expressing concern that I may have implied that anyone with any kind of scarring or facial disfiguration is “not pretty,” and I hope that you understand that that was not what I meant at all when I said I wanted to give my Phantom doll pretty patterns on her face instead of scars. I made this creative decision because that’s what I would enjoy creating, and because I would rather represent the Phantom creatively/symbolically than literally (which is clear in the fact that I made my Phantom a woman rather than a man-this is my creative interpretation of the character). Let me explain my thought process when it comes to my creative choices.
    In the play, it is ONLY the Phantom himself who believes his face is somehow “repulsive,” and this is because of the abuse he has endured throughout his childhood, and the isolation that resulted from it. Although the society that surrounds him may spurn him for his differences, because they are not accepting of people that are different, the whole point of the story and his interactions with Christine show us that his appearance is not a factor in Christine’s feelings towards him. As Christine clearly explains to him near the end of the show, “This haunted face holds no horror for me now ...It's in your soul that the true distortion lies.” (I would go so far as to argue that his face never actually horrified her to begin with; when she pulls off his mask the first time, her fear is a reaction to his sudden shift from gentle to enraged as he begins getting physically aggressive and berating her for daring to look at the face behind the mask.) What really scares Christine isn’t his appearance at all, it’s the fact that he stalks and murders people, believing himself to be justified because of the way he was treated as a child (“The world showed no compassion to me!”).
    So when I created the face under the mask for my Phantom, it kind of symbolizes this-the Phantom lives his life believing he is hideous and unworthy of love, going so far as to hide himself completely from the world-when in actuality, he is different, but he is not all of the negative things he believes himself to be (“this loathsome gargoyle…this repulsive carcass/ who seems a beast/ but secretly dreams of beauty”). While there will always be those who are cruel and shun those who are different, he learns that his uniqueness can be appreciated and even loved. This is the lesson that he learns at the end of the play when Christine shows him genuine, selfless love, which prompts him to abruptly change course and set Christine (and Raoul) free.
    I chose to symbolically represent that the face that the Phantom hides underneath the mask isn’t indeed horrific, as he believes-it’s actually beautiful in its uniqueness, and he is yet to learn this because, until now, no one has ever shown him love. (And the cracks in the face that I drew represent the way that he has been damaged by the cruelty he has endured.)
    I am sorry if anyone felt belittled or offended by the way that I worded my explanation of my creative choice in the video. For those who may relate to the Phantom for the aspects of his appearance that make him different, and who would have liked to see “representation” in this doll somehow, I invite you to be inspired to create those representations yourselves through your own creativity and art, informed by your own experience-I would sincerely love to see what you create.

      Don't worry, Dianna. Most of the people who are upset are just self-projecting their trauma onto people that don't deserve it, storming in loudly, wearing red and a black and white mask of anonymity while holding up their scarred, leather bound books and demanding the play be told THEIR WAY....sounds a little familiar somehow.
      Guys, if you think that a woman changing her nose, her lips, her jaw, her anything is empowering, or that people tattooing over shark bites and mastectomy scars is taking back control from your trauma or that free reconstructive surgery for women who's faces that have been battered or burned with battery acid by abusive lovers is miraculous, but that depicting internal trauma as external, and then taking that trauma and turning it into something beautiful is 'sad' or 'intrinsically uninclusive', then you have missed the point, my friends. You are correct. It's not the outside that counts, but this works in both directions. Don't take away from the struggle and success of others by saying things that aren't considered to be 'normal' are perfectly fine, particularly if you are not fine because someone hurt you. It's not true that everyone is beautiful on the outside. It's not even true that everyone is beautiful on the INSIDE, which arguably matters more. It IS true that humans are programmed to find symmetry attractive because it is a symbol of good genetic health, however, you can only judge people on the content of their character. Sometimes beauties are beasts, and sometimes people have allowed their scars to make them monsters. There is nothing wrong with calling things the way they are or portraying damage in a way that isn't literal. Stop letting your own trauma get the better of you, because the capacity to become a 'Phantom' exists in all of us.

    • @CaraRowen
      @CaraRowen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have so many issues with this. A, the apology/explanation should have been pinned, not buried in the comments though honestly that isn't right either. Only people who come back to see if comments were left will see this, which is like maybe 0.5% of your audience. You should have posted this on your community tab so it would be easily accessible and not seem as if youre trying to bury any comment about stepping outta pocket. B, you didn't imply, you said 'I like to make things pretty, I'm not into horror art' which says outright that scars aren't pretty and further are horrific. I have no scars myself, this is not a self projection. Deflecting from this by effectively saying 'make your own doll' is not only missing the point but also pushing the burden on to others. It is not simply the erasure of a scarred face people are upset about. It's your words, which feel like a reflection of your world view (which is obviously presumption as we do not know you personally and that is exactly what a parasocial relationship is). You implied that scars were ugly and thus so were people with scars, you called them a horror. It is what it is. You apologized for the way your words came off but really you double down with your talk of creative choice and in putting representation in quotes for no reason. Not to mention no one asked for representation. You took a scarred character, drew a bunch of frilly stuff then said 'fixed'. The optics of which are ignorant at best. There's nothing wrong with sometimes being the bad guy, but there is something wrong with taking no ownership of that.
      Also Christine literally screamed in horror when his face was revealed because she was as ignorant. She was in fact repulse in the books, plays, and movies she tells him she is not horrified so he would let her go. She grows to appreciate him beyond these features however. If you find facial scars hideous like the phantom's or more mild cases like Seal's (or Andrew Lloyd's phantom) fine, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but when you're told your words have hurt others don't project that onto other people as if they were the ones in the wrong. Don't misuse text to justify your "defense". It doesn't work in the American legal system and it doesn't work for you.
      You worded it poorly and glamorize your doll in place of people already beat down by society. This is not love of the character, this is not that character. You could have just said the character was 'inspired by' rather than framing it as the phantom but gender bent and made pretty and avoided most of these comments.
      The fact that the only person who wrote in support of your statement says we're all 'projecting' dispite that I don't think any of us are likely to have facial deformities or extreme scarring as that's a statistically low portion of the population, which also deflecting with "but people tattoo over shark bites" and rhinoplasty as if that's relevant should let you know who your words are actually ringing true with.
      None of the criticism was written out of hate or spite, and yet that comment starts with them forgiving for the offended parties and dismissing their feelings. That is who you empowered with your words. That is who feels like you're on their side. Words have meaning and consequences. We just wanted you to understand how your words came across and understand how that affects people who are struggling with scars, disfigurement, and impairments.

    While the bodice wasn't connected to the skirt it reminded me of prince Edward from enchanted. Great concept and execution of the phantom. Loved how you used operetta to help with the scar. Great job all around

    An AMAZING book adaptation inspired by both Lereux (spelling?) original book and the musical in
    Phantom by Susan Kay
    This rendition of the Phantom's story answers the mysteries of the Phantom's background masterfully.
    This suggestion was inspired by your beginning story of seeing the musical.
    I who never wanted children so despised his mother wanted to raise him in her stead - and that was before reaching page 23.
    And this suggestion was before you completed your video rendition of unmasking your phantom. A worthy tithe of enjoying your art.

    Appropriately, the Phantom reopened yesterday on Broadway! I don't know if you planned a Phantom doll for that reason, but either way, she's a very lovely interpretation of the character!

    You could make a back drop that is a bookcase. Then you can fill it with dozens of tiny books! I would definitely watch that lol. You could also make a simple librarian doll?

    I just saw this, today! Where I live, there's an older historical theatre, and they did a showing today. Except, it was the 1925 silent film! And played with a live organ, which makes it even better
    What's interesting, though, is that in the first movie, it's more of a horror film than anything. The Phantom is seen as the bad guy, and the girl is actually scared of him

    I don’t know why, but I wasn’t expecting you to have done the Phantom face under the Red Death mask, which in hindsight is silly. Of course you were going to do the full face up, and made it look elegant yet creepy.
    I love The Phantom of the Opera, and I think you did a brilliant job gender-bending the masquerade look.
