Went to see Exorcist III a few months back in theaters 35mm (UK print because of the BBFC in the beginning) at the music box here in chicago. One of my favorite horror films even though the horror genre doesn't really do much for me.
And earlier in the year, same theater, i saw one of the original prints of the 1st Exorcist before Friedkin color graded it years later after it's initial release. Henceforth, it was really tinted pink but just so cool to see it in its original form.
My sister used to show me exorcist 3 when i was about 4 years old and It would scare the living daylights out of me. In highschool i would rewatch it just to surpass the trauma I endured as a child from the nightmares and paranoia whenever I was alone in school hallways or even an empty hospital. Now, I am 37 years old and it only gives me chills when i see the movie hahaha. I love it!

The 1973 film always had a cold look to it Hikiko so I've clearly never see one of the later re-hashes with a different colour grade applied. I know it best from the Super 8 editions that were released in 1980 or 1981. A masterpiece of a horror film. And I think the 1990 film is a very good sequel. If the second film hadn't have appeared in 1978 I think Exorcist III would have been held in much higher regard right from the start. It seems to have a good following today though so it got there in the end.
Amazing that a UK 35mm print has turned up in Chicago. I expect that's been loaned by a film collector because it's film collectors who have kept and preserved so many of the prints, most of which were chopped up and sent to the landfill.
Watch out for those giant scissors next time you're alone in a long hallway somewhere!
      John.

Yes, it's a very well made film. I don't think I've ever seen The Ninth Configuration but if it's done with the panache of Exorcist III, it's got to be good.

Brad dourif is incredibly in this film and George C Scott’s performance is both funny and serious - it makes for some interesting character moments.. It’s a fantastic procedural detective film and has insanely great horror moments. Love this film.

Some of those long takes with Brad Dourif and George C. Scott are quite incredible. Just learning the lines would be beyond me let alone staying in character to act throughout the extensively long scenes too. John.

Always considered Exorcist 3 one of the best horror movies of the 90s. Brad Dourif’s performance was outstanding and the one tear rolling down his face became his signature

His long takes and extensive dialogue sequences with George C. Scott were incredible. Apparently Mr. Blatty didn't think Jason Miller would be able to remember all the lines which is why Brad Dourif filled in for most of that character's appearances on screen. John.

Hello John. Loving your information and review on Exorcist II & III. Just to take you back to The Exorcist for a moment. When I screened that in the cinema I was working at, we had a lot of Poltergeist activity in the cinema. Pre the release, In the various West End preview theatres were films are promoted (before the release), the van taking the 35mm print around would often be involved in a crash (when the 35mm print was on board). I have DVD copies of The Exorcist unopened, as I will not play it in my home for fear of what might happen! The last time I saw The Exorcist was in Copenhagen in a large cinema and it was packed, and it still scarred the life out of me. Back to II & III, I found your breakdown regarding what was on the disc to be very informative. You then went on to Furiosa. I am not a fan of Mad Max, but I thought Furiosa was really good. I bet it looks stunning on your screen. Can I go back to The Exortcist again. There was a 4th Exorcist movie called Exorcist the Beginning as I am sure you know. Warner Bros had terrible test screenings with it, and refused to release it. It was then decided to let Renny Harlin remake the movie again. I have seen both versions. Indeeed the version that never got released was awful. I saw it at a film festival in Amsterdam. The second version by Renny Harlin was the film that got released. Loved you Vlog. Always so well presented. All the best. Spoolbox

Evening Fred. I didn't actually know there was an Exorcist 4 and then another one after that. Good grief! There's a dead horse outside so I'll just go out there and flog it! A lot of people were asking for my opinion of Exorcist Believer about a year ago but strangely, I couldn't work up the enthusiasm. I'm having similar trouble with the fifth Alien film but I will give that one a try sometime soon. I've always found The Exorcist creepy and for years it was probably the only film that I wouldn't want to sit down and watch in a dark room on my own. However, even that has passed now and I just enjoy it as a film I know far too well having had the Super 8 editions for more than 40 years. It's probably a fairly unique film because it is so scary and that probably sets our 'spider sense' tingling when it's being screened and might help to explain some of the strange goings on that have been reported from its first release up to the present day. Personally, I just have a devil of a good time with it.
Don't tell anyone but I have actually watched that 4K of Furiosa and in terms of image quality it's not as good as Mad Max Fury Road. A bit of a surprise when you consider Fury Road was nine years earlier and actually downscaled to 2K before being exported at 4K for the disc release. If I remember correctly the live action was shot at 6K so I suppose that's 'the VistaVision effect' where the higher resolution master has resulted in a superior end product. I haven't looked up the technical details of Furiosa yet but I can see there's a lot more blue/green screen and computer effects work on it which have lowered the overall quality.
I'm currently looking at doing an Aliens Super 8 and full memorabilia collection video so that should be next assuming I get my act together.
      John.

A criminally underseen gem of a film. I love The Exorcist III. It stands on it's own however it does make an exceptional double feature paired with the original classic. I have the arrow blu ray of this wonderful film and you have me interested in upgrading to the 4k John. That being said, Arrow's blu rays are often so good the 4k versions are at times a very subtle upgrade over their blu ray counterpart. 'The Thing' from arrow looking exceptional even when compared to the beautiful 4k from universal.

Most of the time it's only the HDR application that makes the difference Conall. But the 4K of The Others does put that into question as it didn't have HDR and still looked far better than the standard Blu-ray. There's no contest between the two on my system with this Exorcist 3 pack.

    • @moviecollector5920

To be fair to the studio funding 'Exorcist 3', they had to bear in mind the second film was not well received, or highly regarded, so to attempt another sequel was a big risk. Changing the novel into something more reminiscent of the 1973 film by adding an exorcism did mean they could at least use the 'Exorcist' name. I dare say calling it 'Legion' would have adversely affected distribution and therefore box office returns and that was the reason for the amendments and the resultant title of the film. It's a shame it didn't fare better than it did in the end but it does seem to be more highly regarded today.

Hello John my friends and I saw interstellar on 70 mm imax this Saturday and well it was softer then I expected it. But there were still plenty of scenes were it did look like seeing through a window. But the sound was not something any of us were prepared for! We felt like we were either hanging from the wings or in the cockpit. We felt very shaken after leaving the theater. Definitely something my friends and I will never forget. Something interesting to note because at least for me I saw a few scenes that were soft particularly when Micheal Cain’s character was dying I noticed that his mouth was out of focus but his eyes and forehead were perfectly sharp. I’m wondering if it was a symbolic choice since in that moment he said they lied as he was dying.

    • @moviecollector5920

I expect those scenes which appeared softer were shot anamorphic 35mm Jesse. They can stand out when you're coming off of the largest film format ever invented onto something none or ten times smaller but blown up onto the enormous frames. A lot of the 35mm blends in almost seamlessly though which is amazing when you consider the size differential.
Interstellar is the best IMAX film as far as I'm concerned but the three later Nolan films all look better in terms of overall image quality. If the sound you enjoyed was anything like the BFI IMAX then... simply unbelievable!!!

The sound was something to behold I have to say. My friends felt like way were what imagine a hang over is like (myself and my friends that joined none of us drink). We were certainly shaken and just a little stirred. If our friend Abe and Alex had joined us in certain they would’ve needed a day for the sensory overload with that film especially for how freaking load it is. The one that I’m not sure if my friends noticed because they may not know but during the scenes were there was supposed to be silence I did here the flicker from the projector and it made everything all the more haunting to me. I have to say I did enjoy the film grain and even the occasional dust that gave me confirmed that we were watching film. At times and especially for how big the screen was I do wonder if this was what it was like to watch a 70mm movie back in say the 50’s-70’s? I agree 2001 a space odyssey for this century and frankly a much better film. 2001 may have been ground breaking but the humans were more robotic than the computer trying to kill them. This puts you just as much of an emotional roller coaster as the sound will. Also thank you for your Analysis of this film in this format it gave me a reason to go back to Arizona for the first time since before Covid and I’m glad I got to see my grandmother while there’s something left upstairs even if she acts more like she’s 3 instead of 95.

@@jessechristensen6028 The distant drumming of a film projector is all part of a visit to a cinema. It won't be for youngsters I suppose, but it is for me and always has been. There's something lifeless about video projection however much I appreciate how good it has become. I think there is about 90 minutes of IMAX in INTERSTELLAR and it is of superior quality to standard 70mm. This is because it's a horizontal shooting process which means the image is on its side whereas standard 70mm is vertical. The result is that IMAX is about 30% wider than standard 70mm and that makes a huge difference even at those scales. Have a look at the opening of my recent WHITE CHRISTMAS video again Jesse because the IMAX lightbox I use to illustrate VistaVision does have a standard 70mm strip of DUNKIRK in it too. You can see how much bigger the IMAX frames are over standard 70mm (and 35mm too for that matter) but most importantly how much wider the IMAX 15/70 frames are. Look at them together vertically and it's clear to see IMAX is three frames of standard 70mm but on its side, hence why it's known as 15/70 whereas standard 70mm is now sometimes referred to as 5/70. 15 and 5 denotes the number of sprockets along each individual frame.

And as others have stated, what a crime the alternate director's cut wasn't archived on 35mm somewhere. Could it really be that difficult?!

Fury Road has a saturated look throughout but Furiosa has tonally naturalist look and that might seem easy on the eyes at first, but the visual effects elements come off as fake-ish in it, particularly in the shots with obvious green screen. I haven't watched any behind the scenes and making of it so I could be wrong about those shots. However in comparison to Fury Road, Furiosa looked altogether inferior to me. Now I don't know if it would look any better in 4K with Dolby vision or HDR. I have looked at Furiosa and you're spot on - obvious blue/green screen on quite a few occasions. I think much has a studio bound look, the stunts often look like computer additions and overall the image quality is not up to the film of nine years ago. The sound is pretty fabulous though. I had some trouble with the dialogue at times so I had to turn that up. I intend to play with that again before I think about doing a review. John.

The 1973 original is one of the most historic films ever made Paul. Many imitations have diluted its impact somewhat since then but put your mind back into the early 1970's era and you should still see a masterpiece. A horror made in almost documentary style which is why it had such an impact. The 1990 film is a very good sequel. The 1978 film wasn't. John.

too bad Cameron had to use his Ai Crayons on Terminator... the Blu-Ray from the same scan looks so much more natural

Sometimes video can be messed up by the settings we have on on our systems. Perhaps just double-check again that nothing has switched itself on. I know I keep going on about it but 'sharpen' is the worst offender. That bloody setting engaged itself back on twice on my older 4K video projector and it caused me problems each time before I spotted what had happened.
The Terminator should look exceptionally good on every format because it looked exceptional in the first place. I expect the new 4K was done to look best on huge cinema screens (the few that are left!) so that's likely a factor. Put it on our tiny home screens and it might look too clean and clear.

@@moviecollector5920 The super 8 is probably the way to go. IT's really sad mainly because it was unnesissary there are a few AI anomolies and it's overly smooth with fake grain laid over top. At least it's working from a 4K source so not as bad as True Lies or Aliens

@@MidnightsEdgeAfterDark I only bought my copy so I could use it in a TH-cam video. I know it's a waste of £20 but what can you get for £20 these days? Not much. If I were to hunt down a Super 8 feature print today I'd probably be looking at around £1K. If new prints were struck they'd be around that figure too. I would expect a 35mm print to cost even more. What I'm saying is, people shouldn't get so worked up about their disappointment with a particular home video disc because they're so comparatively cheap. Watch them again a few years down the line and they may look a whole lot more satisfactory.

The trouble with the directors cut is that it's too on the nose, and unnecessary close-up shots of things that we need to take notice.
It lacks the subtlety that was in the original Exorcist.
I was listening to the Mark Kermode and Kim Newman commentary, and Mark was explaining to Kim what certain scenes meant etc, and I was thinking, if he is having to explain to a horror expert what this scene meant and what that meant, then the film has failed completely.
Maybe William Friedkin would've been better off directing this sequel rather than directing the awful horror movie The Guardian.
The theatrical version is the better of the compromised two, but like Blatty's previous film The Ninth Configuration, which is also a compromised mess & has a multiple versions, he would've been better off just being the script writer rather than a director.

Most of us think Exorcist 3 is a very good sequel Floyd. I shouldn't bother listening to commentaries unless they're featuring the people who made the film, primarily the director, otherwise you might actually be listening to a complete load of tosh. Better to watch the film a second time to get a deeper understanding of what you've seen... or perhaps just stick it on the shelf and get it out again a few years later.

Good to have you here. Derann Film Services issued a whole lot of the top Orion Pictures product in the early 1990's and The Terminator was one of them. It's a first run print so we've had it a long time. I haven't seen Simon's 35mm print - yet - but I did see a general release print in 1984 and it looked pretty terrific. The Terminator has always looked pretty terrific. To my eyes, film is always a more natural looking projected image than video but some of the best cinemas do have exceptionally good video projectors that I probably would still frequent if I hadn't have left London. Most haven't though so I only venture to a cinema these days if I know a film print is being screened. If you've grown up with video though, I dare say most would see video as superior. I grew up with film and that's probably got a lot to do with my love of real film.

@ oh, my apologies, kinda a joke. If you’ve noticed, YT content in general has trended toward longer videos, often much longer. In the past it was thought attention spans would not permit it, long after the length limit was lifted by google. Just throwing my vote in the comments that if you thought your viewers expect videos on the tighter side, I vote that they can be as long as you want. But it’s only license to go off if you want, not that I’m upset that you didn’t. Was also drunk heh. Thanks nice work.

@@Maxwell-u5c Interesting. I tend to find that shorter videos, where I'm reviewing a single 4K disc release, tend to fare better than longer ones. However, when it comes to more interesting subjects such as visits to cinema projection boxes, those can be quite lengthy and generate far bigger numbers of views. It almost seems that the longer they are, the better.
