This piano part written by Rita Coolidge and Dominos drummer and Coolidge boyfriend Jim Gordon but Gordon claimed as his own and credited only to him. This part was recorded a couple weeks later with Gordon playing the piano and Duane Allman on slide guitar and added to the main song. Domino piano player Bobby Whitlock also added extra piano to make the incredible sound we hear. The song that Rita claimed he took this from was her song "Time" she and Jim had written earlier. She asked to be credited as a songwriter on Layla but she was denied and never pursued it any further. Hear for yourself, that's Rita's sister Priscilla on vocals with Booker T. 😀

@@Ray-mw1fx The original version's single edit also fades out before the piano part.
In fact, Bobby Whitlock (the keyboard player) did not believe this piano part should even have been part of Eric's song, because Jim Gordon (the drummer, who was jailed in 1983 for murdering his own mother) co-wrote the track with Rita Coolidge. Coolidge's sister, Priscilla Jones, had a song called "Time" and that has the exact same melody as the "Layla" piano part. Whitlock insisted that the inclusion of the piano part would wreck an otherwise great song that Eric wrote straight from his heart, calling it "tainted goods" and he remembered, "Jim took the melody from Rita's song and didn't give her credit for writing it. Her boyfriend ripped her off. I knew -- but nobody would ever listen to or believe me."

Naho Saenoki Yeah The Sopranos is a wonderful show. I'm currently on season 4. I have an idea about the way it ends but haven't spoiled it for myself in detail. From what I've heard it garnered mixed reactions, being criticized for its lack of conclusiveness. As disappointing as it may or may not be I doubt it would detract from the overall series' quality.

I can not see The Sopranos because I really hate Tony xDD. Furthermore, Henry Hill was a real character (now, he is dead). So, I can not understand how people can just want good times for him or for everyone else like him... But the movie and the soundtrack are very good, that is true xD.

We were good fellas. Wiseguys. But Jimmy and I could never be made because we had Irish blood. It didn't even matter that my mother was Sicilian. To become a member of a crew you've got to be one hundred per cent Italian so they can trace all your relatives back to the old country. See, it's the highest honor they can give you. It means you belong to a family and crew. It means that nobody can fuck around with you. It also means you could fuck around with anybody just as long as they aren't also a member. It's like a license to steal. It's a license to do anything. As far as Jimmy was concerned with Tommy being made, it was like we were all being made. We would now have one of our own as a member.

More than the cinematic perspective, what made the music great is the band behind it: Bobby Whitlock (keyboards/piano), Carl Radle (bass), Jim Gordon (drums) and Duane Allman (slide guitar)...plus Eric Clapton. The person who actually composed the piano bit is Jim Gordon's girlfriend Rita Coolidge... who sadly was never credited on the album.

My grandparents lost the house they lived in for 40 some odd years and saying the last goodbye to the house I played this and my aunt and grandparents just cried to this song playing. Always think of Goodfellas and that house I grew up in when I was there. Childhood when parents were at work, growing up and lived there after graduating to help them out with basic household chores. 26 years of my life with that awesome home. Always think of that place as "home is where the heart is". My mother and 2 sisters grew up there as well so tons of memories of that place. One of the oldest houses on that block. Was built in 1965ish or something

I feel your agony. Had a similar experience with a great-grandparents' house. Built in 1906 near downtown Los Angeles, they moved in around 1950 during the prosperous '50's. My aunt, who is going to be 60 was the last person of the family to reside there until it was sold in about 2003. No immediate family could afford or wanted to move in. Time just marches on, unless we commemorate events we hold dear to our hearts.

    1,000th comment.
This film is a masterpiece and I love it. I’ll never forget watching it with my mother.
During a road trip to visit my father, about half way there we reached San Antonio, and got through it to the country. Boerne and Seely alike. My mother changed the station on the radio to a rock station only available in that area, the moment the commercial ended, the host announced on the radio that Jim Gordon had died.
He told the story of his collaborations in music and his amazing talent, and eventually his tragic tale. He also told of his composition of this piano piece in “Layla,” which he soon after played. My mother and I silently and listened to it.
When the piano piece played, my god. I never heard the song like that, something was different about it.
