Piccolo never punked vegeta. Piccolo is at about a 1,000,000+ power level. Vegeta doesn't want to fight Piccolo, his squabble was with gohan. It's not worth the energy fighting Piccolo just to kill gohan so he took off.

Gohan had half a senzu in that battle, then he fought again and spent time at the hospital, then on Namek he got his power unlocked, he had another senzu and he was healed by Dende after he nearly died both times. If nothing else he respected their drive. Even though they were outclassed in every sense of the world they still fought. When they got knocked down, they forced themselves back up time and again. Dying to Frieza and having a 'low-class' Saiyen not only kill Frieza but also accomplish legendary status yanked his spiky-haired head out of his arse and forced him to face reality. He wasn't nearly as strong as he thought he was, and there were indeed bigger fish out there, and sometimes even the little fish still had a nasty bite.

This is the most cognitively dissonant moment ever. He's walking around like he's such a bad MF'r while simultaneously admitting that Gohan has the potential to take him out.
Shame, it's what we should've saw probably quite literally in the first buu saga episode instead of nerfed schoolboy gohan. Toriyama's more punkish look for gohan was so much better. Him listening to goku fanboys nearly ruined the whole series, now his prodigy is making garbage with super. Gohan and Vegeta in a super heated fight would've been awesome and given Vegeta more motive/drive after how he felt like a total failure at the end of the cell saga. And Gohan in non-canon Bojack Unbound was what we deserved-he was an anti-hero, while goku was the fighter who doesn't like bully's/bad guys and channels that. It was so in place. It's a shame it was ruined, except really for Vegeta who did get a good arc with the majin stuff and then his sacrificial effort.

Subtly is better since people can realize what they missed the 2nd and 3rd time around. If Vegeta talked to Gohan about his dad, it would've spelled it out too easily taking away the mystique. The more we rewatch it the more it's obvious how deep OG DBZ was. And that's why DB Super is trash
Yeah, gotta agree with the replies here. Vegeta was definitely a favorite character from Z for me because his character had nuanced qualities like that. There's more to him than meets the eye, and the more it comes to the surface for a character like him, the less genuine it feels. Think of the scene where Freeza killed Vegeta. Vegeta spilled a huge amount of emotion because it was the last chance he would ever have, and yet, it was still all centered around the pride of the Saiyans. The monologue was strange for him with the amount of emotion brought to the surface, but they still wrote it in a way that fit him. Had he talked about his father while beating up Gohan, we would have seen him in a vulnerable state while he had an advantage, and moreover it would have been a moment where Vegeta actually allowed things to be personal. I don't think any of that would have fit him at all. However, taking into account that Vegeta called Gohan a tough guy was a glimpse into his honest thoughts about both Gohan and Goku. Respect is no commodity for Vegeta, so even that slight praise says a lot about his feelings. Scenes like this are a testament to the sort of character Vegeta is and that the writers were willing to stick to that characterization. Damn, I said a lot more than I meant to. He unlocks and then loses promptly whatever power his rage manages to tap into

Goku went from a power level of 90,000 in base to 3,000,000 in ONE beating, Thats a 33x Multiplier, DAMN near a Super Saiyan power up in his SLEEP lmao.
They did a really good job of showing Vegeta change in real time during this arc. He still tries to keep up the "big bad Saiyan warrior" facade but it's obvious that he has a lot of respect for Gohan at this point, and tries to talk the boy out of the fight. He doesn't even fight back until Gohan bloodies him, and even then he pulls his punches and refuses to outright kill him after Piccolo steps in, even though there's no way Piccolo could have stopped him. Between this and the way he saves Gohan from Frieza and the Ginyu force, and some of his dialogue with Goku we get to see his character progression as it happens and I love it.
Future trunks: Gohan, you met my dad, what was he like? Gohan: *flash back* Vegeta:*YOU THINK YORE BETTER THAN ME BECUSE YOUR DAD HAS ACHIEVED AN ACINET PROPHECY!?!?* while beating the crap out of gohan Gohan: NOO Vegeta: *WRONG ANSWER* Future gohan: he had issues
I think it’s because piccolo understands the way saiyans interact. Battle and standing for one’s self is very important for a young warrior especially a saiyan. If Gohan backed down Vegeta would have definitely picked on Gohan until he actually did challenge him or when his dad returned (which was unlikely to everyone at this part of the story.) Also Piccolo wants to see what Gohan is made of since he is his main teacher. sorry for the long unnecessary opinion 😂

Vegeta is most likely hiding the fact that he's also upset Goku's dead. This is most likely a deflection as to not show that he's bummed he can't train, and perhaps surpass, Goku. Also, Gohan at this stage isn't anywhere near Vegeta's level. He took it easy against Gohan initially and paid the price. It's clear from the rest of the fight he could've killed Gohan at any point. Which brings me back to my initial take; Vegeta was upset that Goku surpassed him and then sacrificed himself killing Frieza. He taunted Gohan as a roundabout way to take out his frustration on the closest thing to Goku, his son.
Piccolo would have killed vegeta at this point of the saga. Piccolo has the biggest balls close to T.Ns when he got his arm punched clean off by Napa and still continued to fight.

Shame, it's what we should've saw probably quite literally in the first buu saga episode instead of nerfed schoolboy gohan. Toriyama's more punkish look for gohan was so much better. Him listening to goku fanboys nearly ruined the whole series, now his prodigy is making garbage with super. Gohan and Vegeta in a super heated fight would've been awesome and given Vegeta more motive/drive after how he felt like a total failure at the end of the cell saga. And Gohan in non-canon Bojack Unbound was what we deserved-he was an anti-hero, while goku was the fighter who doesn't like bully's/bad guys and channels that. It was so in place. It's a shame it was ruined, except really for Vegeta who did get a good arc with the majin stuff and then his sacrificial effort.

Yeah, gotta agree with the replies here. Vegeta was definitely a favorite character from Z for me because his character had nuanced qualities like that. There's more to him than meets the eye, and the more it comes to the surface for a character like him, the less genuine it feels. Think of the scene where Freeza killed Vegeta. Vegeta spilled a huge amount of emotion because it was the last chance he would ever have, and yet, it was still all centered around the pride of the Saiyans. The monologue was strange for him with the amount of emotion brought to the surface, but they still wrote it in a way that fit him. Had he talked about his father while beating up Gohan, we would have seen him in a vulnerable state while he had an advantage, and moreover it would have been a moment where Vegeta actually allowed things to be personal. I don't think any of that would have fit him at all. However, taking into account that Vegeta called Gohan a tough guy was a glimpse into his honest thoughts about both Gohan and Goku. Respect is no commodity for Vegeta, so even that slight praise says a lot about his feelings. Scenes like this are a testament to the sort of character Vegeta is and that the writers were willing to stick to that characterization.

Outside of that, Vegeta only showed brief glimpses of the budding respect he had for his tenuous allies - chastising Gohan and Krillin for wasting an opportunity to damage Recoome by saving his life instead, for example.

Back when it was satisfying seeing Vegeta get his ass kicked
They did a really good job of showing Vegeta change in real time during this arc. He still tries to keep up the "big bad Saiyan warrior" facade but it's obvious that he has a lot of respect for Gohan at this point, and tries to talk the boy out of the fight. He doesn't even fight back until Gohan bloodies him, and even then he pulls his punches and refuses to outright kill him after Piccolo steps in, even though there's no way Piccolo could have stopped him. Between this and the way he saves Gohan from Frieza and the Ginyu force, and some of his dialogue with Goku we get to see his character progression as it happens and I love it.

Vegeta is most likely hiding the fact that he's also upset Goku's dead. This is most likely a deflection as to not show that he's bummed he can't train, and perhaps surpass, Goku.
Also, Gohan at this stage isn't anywhere near Vegeta's level. He took it easy against Gohan initially and paid the price. It's clear from the rest of the fight he could've killed Gohan at any point. Which brings me back to my initial take; Vegeta was upset that Goku surpassed him and then sacrificed himself killing Frieza. He taunted Gohan as a roundabout way to take out his frustration on the closest thing to Goku, his son.
