That's why it's called a Deep Cut… It's a little bit weird, a bit sideways, and there are chord changes and key modulations that baffle the main stream music listener who can't pay attention for more than three seconds. And you need a few tracks like this to even the pace on an album like Jagged Pill which is obviously bursting with poppy energy. Her songs all come out of her lyrics, which are essentially confessional journal entries so those feelings shade the music that follows.
Here in 2024 after I just saw her at a festival in MN last weekend. She didn’t do this song there and it’s probably my favorite one on the album… as a struggling Jehovah’s Witnesses kid at the time, it hit hard. I have tears in my eyes right now, this was glorious.
ANGST AND REBELLION. ANGRY ALANIS IS THE BEST ALANIS. I UNDERSTAND SHE'S GOTTEN OLDER, BUT THIS IS HOW I WILL REMEMBER HER. I WORE JAGGED LITTLE PILL OUT. AND STILL OWN IT AS WELL AS STILL LISTEN TO IT. ONE OF MY TOP TWO FAVORITES. IT MIGHT JUST BE MY #1. IT'S THAT GOOD!!
Floored -- with a jaw-dropping ending. This is one of her greatest (though unheralded) songs and IMO this is the greatest performance of that song. Lucky folks who were at Hyde Park that memorable day.
Powerfull singer, my favorite of their generation and probably the best with Janis Joplyn, what a brutal performance, epic; i'm sure on 4:06 she is almost crying, even that she didn't stop, makes a terrific demonstration
Do nada peguei meu CD da Alanis pra ouvir, e tocou essa música, que eu ouvia sem parar lá pelos fins dos anos 98. Música poderosa! Lembranças de outros tempos, parece que era outro mundo.
Thanks for posting. These live songs from this concert are only missing a backing vocalist or two for some of the harmonies on the album, other than that, great versions.
I bought her autographed harmonica. 2021 Chicago. Great show. I follow her around. 4 shows in total. Alanis rocks. If you never seen her in person do it.
Not all performances require going crazy as part of the response. I saw Tool live in 2007 on their ‘10,000 Days’ tour and they did ‘Wings for Marie/10,000 Days’ and the crowd just stood there in awe, minus a few drunks here and there. It was just an experience, as seeing her do her thing on probably the most underrated but powerful songs on that album.
Lyrics Forgiven You know how us Catholic girls can be We make up for so much time, a little too late I never forgot it, confusing as it was No fun with no guilt feelings The sinners, the saviors, the loverless priests I'll see you next Sunday We all had our reasons to be there We all had a thing or two to learn We all needed something to cling to So we did I sang Alleluia in the choir (Alleluia) I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious man My brothers, they never went blind for what they did But I may as well have In the name of the Father, the Skeptic and the Son I had one more stupid question We all had our reasons to be there We all had a thing or two to learn We all needed something to cling to So we did What I learned, I rejected, but I believe again I will suffer the consequence of this inquisition If I jump in this fountain, will I be forgiven? We all had our reasons to be there We all had a thing or two to learn We all needed something to cling to So we did We all had delusions in our heads We all had our minds made up for us We had to believe in something So we did We all had our reasons to be there We all had a thing to learn We all needed something to cling to So we did So we did Ooh-ooh, I, I, I So we did
this tune didn't go mainstream even so one of the best she has ever furnished...
Agreed
@@topanga26 it makes you think about a relationship with religion, God and yourself. As long as I'm considered, it's a masterpiece!
The album did though
Damn! Taylor Hawkins has been rocking at top level since forever

This woman saved my life, growing up as a gay man was so difficult at that time. Thank you Alanis 👍
Yo same! This album definitely gave me a safe place to experience all of the anger and fear I had to hide away.
Same here !!
As a young teen when Jagged Little Pill came out and heard the song Perfect I finally felt understood.
Same here
That doesn’t make sense 🤔
My favorite Alanis song. I wish it had broken into the mainstream. It’s powerful like Uninvited.
I'm so glad it didn't.
@@radioactivepotato2068 Me too! Then it would have been overplayed like the ones that did
Alanis is such an amazing vocalist. For me, this is the most INFJ song she’s written. RIP Taylor, what a talent he was!
I'm an INFP apparently and I've always loved it. I think it's her best song.

Ex JW myself.. out about 4 years when JLP dropped. This song is my favorite on the album too .. coincidence?
You can hear her voice crack at 4:01 and she wipes away a tear at 4:08. Always admired her passionate singing.
So refreshing to hear Taylor play non-dave grohl sounding drum beats. Straight rock drumming.
right?! he was very talented. were him and alanis an item at one point? or just a rumour?
@@vladdrac2899 yeah they hooked up listen to unsent demo
My favourite Alanis song, it's so powerful.
The crowd wasn’t excited enough for me. This is a masterpiece before their eyes.
Jammed out to this when I was 13 and today I still jam out to it with my 12 year old! Hands down her BEST song!

Still listening in 2020 - still awesome song
🥇

Still loving this in 2021
I today 😍😍
Rest In Peace Taylor. You were an amazing musician and even better person. You will be remembered by many.
This is an ethereal song.
This was always one of my favorite songs by her, but WOW she really blew it out of the water in this this.
my fav track of her....to the one cool chick in the crowd who knows the words....i'm with ya sister!
Little sister in the crowd more than understood the assignment. She understood the truth.
What a great performance of this fantastic song!! And with the awesome Taylor Hawkins on drums
Amazing. And probably my favourite Alanis Morissette song 🎵
This is such a kick ass performance!!
Alanis reaching Janis Joplin like levels with a song worthy of a time capsule.
Look at Taylor rock out 🤘🏻 Rest Easy.. 🌹
What a woman!
❤️ amor eterno por essa música!
Parece que foi feita hontem
mesmo não sendo música de trabalho, é maravilhosa, alias, todas do Jagged são perfeitas.
I Love her smile and songs 🎵and her hand in my pocket 💗💕
Rip Taylor 🤘😥💔
April, 2021 and I'm still here.
Amazing woman!
Simplemente brutal Alania.

R.I.P. Taylor Hawkins 😞
I love you ❤
The best Taylor!!
The voice of God. Of course it's powerful.
Epico , desde Argentina!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
At 4:08 is she crying? or just is touching her face? It seems that this song would be haunting her
I think she was not understood. Possibly, ahead if her time.
I play her music alot!!!
Hey, is that the Foo Fighters drummer?
He tour with Alanis for almost two years!
Taylor Hawkins

Boring c###s the fans i mean you gotta rock out to this one her best and hardest tune
Because they want to pay attention to the performance?
Not really into the bridge part in this live version, bust still an amazing song
Alanis, she can just yell and sound good lol.

Forgiven
You know how us Catholic girls can be
We make up for so much time, a little too late
I never forgot it, confusing as it was
No fun with no guilt feelings
The sinners, the saviors, the loverless priests
I'll see you next Sunday
We all had our reasons to be there
We all had a thing or two to learn
We all needed something to cling to
So we did
I sang Alleluia in the choir (Alleluia)
I confessed my darkest deeds to an envious man
My brothers, they never went blind for what they did
But I may as well have
In the name of the Father, the Skeptic and the Son
I had one more stupid question
We all had our reasons to be there
We all had a thing or two to learn
We all needed something to cling to
So we did
What I learned, I rejected, but I believe again
I will suffer the consequence of this inquisition
If I jump in this fountain, will I be forgiven?
We all had our reasons to be there
We all had a thing or two to learn
We all needed something to cling to
So we did
We all had delusions in our heads
We all had our minds made up for us
We had to believe in something
So we did
We all had our reasons to be there
We all had a thing to learn
We all needed something to cling to
So we did
So we did
Ooh-ooh, I, I, I
