    As a person who hated Twilight back then because the love story was so bad, hearing you describe the lore actually made it sound so cool. Also, very cool that you were a guy who liked Twilight. Looking back, while there were a lot of valid criticisms of Twilight, a lot of it also just boiled down to people being mad that the sparkly vampires were not “manly” enough. It’s nice that everyone can look back on it and see both the good and bad.

      There's super weird parts of the lore (like melanin being "burned away" by the venom, making all vampires white af). That garbage aside, the best parts of the Twilight world building are the side characters.

    Not all shapeshifters are the same. The classic werewolves are victims of attacks by another werewolf, just like vampires. The Native American shapeshifters is an outgrowth of their religious practices.
    Skinwalkers are considered witches, and totally evil. It would be a grievous calumny to call Jacob and the wolf pack skinwalkers.

    I think Twilight is kind of coming back into interest.
    To be honest, besides the cringy whole weird romance plot that drives the story, the world of twilight is interesting and barely tapped into.
    For example, a whole vampire government and all that implies, the Quiletes and the whole history and lore surrounding their tribe, and the fact that some vampires can develop special gifts.
    I want to dive more into those concepts instead of the obsessive romance that we were ultimately given!

      There’s a former Mormon woman who did a reading of the books and blogged about it, which provided a lot of insight for me. For example, the volturi in Italy is a reference to the divide between Mormons and Catholics, where Mormons scoff at Catholics for needing an authority to address god, while mormonism is directly connected to god.

    • @CraftQueen22
      @CraftQueen22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel that mormonism is a cult. I also feel that catholicism is a cult. They both have secrets that they don't share with the public. I live in a city that was founded by mormons but I'm not a mormon. I don't understand why people pick this religion since it is obviously a cult! I am, however, a Twilight fan (both books & movies). I watch it everytime it comes on TV.

    I always felt the issue with Edward having lived so many more years than Bella was less about the age difference, and more a question of how he could possibly be attracted to someone with fewer experiences. Edward is frozen at 17. His body and his mind are stuck at that level of development. He as a character would be super impulsive and immature, at least that’s probably how the writing should have portrayed him. Bella is naturally 17 when they meet. He has been around longer, but he is at the same level of development she is. So it’s definitely different than an actual old man being interested in a young woman. Edward is physically and mentally a young man. So my question really isn’t whether it’s appropriate. My question is, if you had seen decades of culture, knowledge, discoveries, and advancements, why would you be interested in someone who didn’t share any of those experiences? It can happen in real life to two real people who are the exact same age. Let’s say one of them spends a year studying abroad, or going on a world tour somehow, and they come back knowing so much and having seen so many things that you don’t see when you never leave the place where you grew up. How could that person be attracted to someone who knew about none of it? That doesn’t make the other person bad, not all of us can go and do those things. You have to have the time, the money, etc. And in Twilight it’s not Bella’s fault that she is naturally 17 and hasn’t lived for a century. But even so, Edward, who was born in 1901, has seen two world wars, the discovery of penicillin, the invention of rock and roll, various civil rights movements, and tons of other historic events. Bella has read about it all in school, but she wasn’t there. She didn’t see it all happen. Personally, if I had seen all those things, I would be much more interested in dating someone who also had. I just don’t think Bella and Edward actually have anything in common. And that’s not either of their faults, but it makes it so tough to understand why they’re so in love. Anyway, that’s a bigger question for me than the ethics of someone frozen mentally and physically at 17 falling for someone who is naturally mentally and physically 17. Seriously, the only difference is that he’s been 17 ~for a while~

    • @Jeremy.lee87
      @Jeremy.lee87 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't really think someone lacking in a ton of life experience makes them unattractive or attractive, it can be an interesting bonus to their personality I guess and going through all that would definitely change a person but you can't really help who u love but also who else would Edward date 😭🤣 his only options on the life experience factor as much as he has are old ( or dead already because he's 100+) ladies and the fact he's physically 17 idk if any older women would go for him either lmaoo he's still technically a minor 🤣🤣

      @@Sani-wk8ug Yes, and of course the desire to murder her lol. Those were the things he first noticed about her, leading him to develop a fascination. What I question is why they not only fell in love, but stayed in love. I feel like they would have later realized they didn’t have enough in common to be together. But this is all just my opinion on two fictional characters, you know?

    • @christianealshut1123
      @christianealshut1123 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree with you in as far as you say that Edward has remained frozen at the age of 17 so that he really cannot be seen as "much older" than Bella. But even though he has more experiences than Bella, he does not learn from these experiences in the same way that a human would; if he is frozen at the stage of maturity of a 17-year-old, these experiences will not cause him to mature beyond this age. I think this is actually the reason why in the Twilightverse, it is essentially forbidden to make children into vampires because they are altogether uncontrollable as far as their impulses are concerned and cannot be made to mature through "teaching" or "experiences" because they have been "frozen" and these simply do not affect them. As for the vampires that have been turned at a later stage of their maturity, they can at least compensate for the lack of maturity through their higher-developed roleplaying skills; they can appear to be more mature than they actually are. Occasionally, also, it boils down to the role expectations in the century in which the individual was turned into a vampire: Carlisle, for instance, was turned at age 23 in the 17th century, and at that time you were already acting as a fully trained adult at that age (Carlisle was a physician), i.e. he was much more mature much earlier than a 23-year-old in the 21st century.

      I always thought that vampires in Twilight were also a bit like superheroes because they each have a special power, which is not really part of traditional vampire lore. And that special superpower seems to be dormant in the individual even before they become a vampire. Thus Edward is telepathic but he is intrigued by Bella because he cannot read her mind, which points to her innate ability to "shield" herself. And later as a vampire be becomes a fully-fledged "shield" with the ability to protect against all sorts of attacks. It is almost as if Stephenie Meyer uses the Mormon tenet that people can "ascend" and be "perfected" to suggest that what Edward does to Bella when turning her is not an "evil" thing, but actually perfects her; she is a totally unremarkable girl while she is human, but becoming a vampire actually seems to allow her to fulfil her innate potential to the fullest extent possible. In classical vampire literature, vampires are suggested to be demons by the church, they are the Antichrist (which is also why a crucifix is a ward against them), whereas Meyer actually reinterprets them to be something in conformity with her Mormonist faith.

      I think there is a difference between being a werewolf and a shapeshifter - for a werewolf, the process is involuntary and only occurs at the full moon; the "werewolves" in Twilight are essentially shapeshifters (much like animaguses in the Potterverse), i.e. after that ability has awakened in them with the onset of puberty, they have a certain degree of influence on whether and when they transform, though it also seems to be triggered somewhat by instinct.

    Alice is great a million times better then Eddy Boy and the bland piece of toast called Bella. Also the lore is a million times more interesting then the love story schlock we’re meant to suffer through. And yes the imprinting nonsense is extremely fucked up. Also a weird lore series would be awesome.

      Yes, I agree with you that the imprinting concept is extremely negative because apart from the notion that abortion is never OK even if done in order to save the mother, imprinting can result in your staying within a relationship that is extremely toxic or violence, i.e. if domestic violence occurs in such a case you have to stay with your partner because it is an eternal things, and as far as I can remember such a pairing also does occur in Twilight (Sam and Emily, but I am not sure right now).

    Jacob betrothed to a baby isn't that farfetched when you think about it. Anime is very popular with subtle hints like that. Inuyasha - Sesshomaru wanted to mate with Rin who was like an 8 year old girl at the time. The author of Inuyasha stated that he would have taken Rin as his mate when she was old enough.

    • @christianealshut1123
      @christianealshut1123 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      And sometimes you even find it in classics of English literature such as Jane Austen's Emma, where it is mentioned that Mr. Knightley can remember holding Emma in his arms when she was still a baby (he is 17 years older than she). Stephenie Meyer is a huge Jane Austen fan; it may be that she has the Jacob/Renesmee imprinting from this. (She also mentioned that the description of Bella's wedding dress was inspired by the regency aesthetic in the Jane Austen books.)
      But more likely it's a Mormon thing according to which certain people could be destined for each other and their union was made in Heaven. There is also a concept like "sealing" which does seem to be part of the marriage ceremony but not just marriage; It seems to be designed to seal members of a family to each other for eternity. There is very much the drift in the Twilight books that if you fall in love with a person, it is not mere lust but that you want to be with this person forever.

They say Edward was very good at reading the room and body language therefore knew what people were thinking. They don’t necessarily have powers but their abilities would sometimes evolve when they turned.

    When I was a teen I refused to read or watch the twilight stories, the love story aspect just seemed so corny and celebrating toxicity, and I was so sick of toxic romances. Until a service user in a soup kitchen for homeless teens and young adults that I volunteered at sort of challenged me to read the books, saying not to think of it as a romance but a psycholical thriller. He lent me his books and I gave them a go and loved them. They're books that really get the brain thinking and introduce a world and lore that is easy to slip yourself into and explore in daydreams, fanfic or the like. To me the romance aspects were just a surface level distraction from the real depth of the within the story. I saw it as a philosophical exploration of morality, mortality, good vrs evil, what it means to be human, beliefs and trauma, souls and soulessness. But also covered topics such as social apathy, as most of the plot is ignored almost wilfully by the majority of the humans around them, who don't want to look too closely, and vamps cos it serves them for humans to be ignorant.
    There's also an exploration of how mortality impacts morality, such as "some crimes dont seem like crimes cos vampire rules/norms are different" and can we judge vampire behaviours from human moral perspectives? Never mind the religious undertones, bith through the subcontrxt of Mormonism that seeps into the pages, but also through Carlisle, Edward and even Aros religious views on their soullessness. Plus the Cullen's also give themselves more rules than other vampires cos they try to fit in with humans to an extent, almost trying to cling to their humanity while battling their own mostrous nature. But then again are vampires only monsteous cos most never bother trying to battle those instincts, dont see why they should and are the cullens right to try. To us, as humans, cos we think they are but does than mean all vampires who arent vampires are automatically evil? The ladt book subtly queries this. Is it monsterous when they need to eat humans, or is that just deem monstrous cos were their food. Are we monsters from the cows perspective? Etc.
    And there's exploration in the books of why they cling to their humanity. We see in the last book just how different the Cullens are from other vampires, they hold onto more the the love and family bonds than most vampires do that enables their clan to be more a family than a clan. We see most vampires, the main exceptions being the Volturi and Cullens, stay in small groups that are prone to betrayal and change, if not just mated pairings. Does clinging to their humanity make them better vampires?
    Plus the exploration of extra powers as something every human could have the protential to be magical vampires but just dont cos its not easy for vamps to make other vampires cos its hard to not bite and kill, due to the "must eat" overwhelming bloodlust that few try to resist within their vampire lives. Maybe the humans who, like Bella, seem to be innately inclined towards vampirism are the descendants of hybrids? I can easily imagine, back when there were multiple varieties of humans in the world, then maybe vampires were just another type of human that couldn't breed and replicate as successfully as homosapiens, but still dominated the food chain in their own way. Its well known we, homosapiens, have Neandathal dna mixed with out own due to interal special relations. Easy to imagine back then homosapiens and vampires exsisting more mutually aware of each other.
    Then theres the laws and exploration of police/government oversight for nomadic superpowered creatures that dont have set rooted locations but are nobadic across multiple human ciktures and communities whilst still be influenced by human culture. Are the Volturi worthy of their power and why dont the Cullen's stand up to overrule them, etc. their cruelty seems excessive to us the readers from our humanist perspective and told through the perspective of vampires who're trying to be more human than vampire. Within their vamp culture its sort of seen as understandable why the Volturi are so violently extreme cos when you're a supernatural being against other mostly equally powerful supernatural beings its a different social dynamic and consequences (hense why Aro likes to collect superpowered vampires in his coven). If humans break the law, we cant put in prison and most of us dont have the ability to break out or fight back. But if vampires break the law they put the whole species at risk and can't be put in jail, no jail could hold them. Its obey the few rules or die cos thats the only way their culture can continue to thrive when their food, if aware of them, can distroy them (nukes would kill vamps too, its superheated fire afterall). So from a humanist perspective, the Volturi are despicable and not deserving of power, but from the vampires perspective someone has to enforce laws and who'd want that responsibility when they could just being enjoying a nonadic life snacking on the odd human. Heck even the Cullen's arent interested in changing the status quo within vampire culture, they just want to live their lives, not have power or responsibility over other vampires, etc. even in the last book, the Cullen's collected other vampires together not to fight the volturi but to make sure they got a fair trial in the hopes of a non violent outcome. And it worked (though probably more due to Aro not having a way to safely kill them without loosing face within the community of witnesses and without loss to his ranks of carefully controlled superpowered vampires than due to any actual justice or shared vampire rights).
    These books are dark and deep and brutal.
    After Nessy, we find out about the vampire in south America who grapes woman to make hybrids. The vampire world, outside of the cullens, is a brutal society within the shadows of our societies.
    I've always wondered if the wolves got their transformative powers due to hybrid traits in their genes from a hybrid in accent times who paired with a human and those traits desended down the tridial lines until a vampire threat triggered those traits to be activated as powers based on the tribes cultural beliefs, hense why wolf form in their tride. Maybe other tribes around the world have other animal transformations or other powers all together. If true then the imprinting thing itself is probably also a left over trait from the vamp DNA as when vampires mate they mate for life. It's easy to see Bella and Edwards obsession with one another as its own kind of imprinting, especially as the pain of separation for Bella and Edward is similar to what's discribed as it would be for imprinted wolf pairings, just without the awareness or language that Jacobs tribe use. Eg when Rose tells us about how she saw Emmett being attacked by a bear and knew she had to save him and spend her life with him. She essentially discribed imprinting on Emmett without the tribes terminology and understanding. The bond tween bella and Edward is also similarly sudden, weakened only due to her being human same as Jacob was obsessed with her cos he was fated to imprint on hr child. Its weird and messed up, but the magic, for lack of better terms, in the twilight universe isn't one of free will that we'd associate with love in our reality.
    Also, the love stuff in itself is a a philosophical exploration of freewill and obsessive, healthy or unhealthy love.
    It's such a fascinating univtto mentally explore. Especially for its timez as the grand climax is non violent was so refreshing in a way, considering how violent their cukture is youd expect a big fight cos thats what we, humans, would've probably done. They're all ready for a fight, especially some of the Cullen's witnesses, that ultimately it doesn't happen cos they're too evenly footed which makes Aro uncomfortable as he's not at an obvious advantage in this match, super strong and powerful as vampires are, their biggest threat is each other. So theres an exploration of power itself within a culture or community. Which leaves you wondering and exploring the Volturis motivation and what would happen next. Is Aro biding his time until he can get revenge of the Cullen's and get alice into his little club, whilst also being naturally curious about how the cullens function as a clan when it takes so much effort and manipulation on his part of hold his army together (literally one of the superpowered vamps in his "clan" has the piwer to influence relationships and is used to motivate loyalty to him). Aro is such a compelling villain cos hes smart, cunning, curious and clearly immoral in a inhuman sense. When immortal children were a thing, within vampire culture, its mentioned that the Volturi tried their own experimentations to determine if there was a way to teach children. Meaning they knowingly put children of different ages through rhe torture of being turned and then experimented on only to be killed. So its safe to assume that the volturi will be moving forward to mame experiments abiut hybrids next. Especially wirh what we know of Aros psychology.
    The other characters, not bella kf Edward, are the most intriguing aslect of the stories. Their traumas, beliefs, values, etc.

      Yes, that's true, at one point he admits that he always loved Bella because he loved her (then still potential) daughter through her, as if he wanted to be close to her for the mere fact that one day she would bear a daughter she would imprint on. It is also a somewhat political/dynastic thing because it makes him claim his place as werewolf "royalty" within the pack (he founds a new pack/cadet line apart from the old one, which also contains the Clearwater siblings, and makes himself into the alpha and Leah into his "beta"). It essentially contributes to forming an alliance between the vampires and the werewolves which is also directed against the ancient vampire aristocracy of the Volturi. And it is essentially sealed through the union of two individuals from the respective factions.

      Agreed, I didn't bat an eye when I was a teen reading it, but as an adult it makes me cringe. The worst part is how Twilight tries to normalize it, and then when you compare that to how Mormons marry 15 year old girls and younger... Ew. Just eck. Gross.
      Compare that to the vampire chronicles from Anne Rice, there's a lot of messed up subject matter there, everything from incest to characters with the minds of adults stuck in the bodies of children, but in those books they never try to make it seem normal, they play on the fact that this is wrong and sinful as a plot point. They don't try to make it seem normal or acceptable, rather TVC often shows that these people are in pain because of their trauma and affliction, the series isn't without flaws if it's own, but it doesn't romanticize the state of its characters suffering, it doesn't use that to push an agenda,
      Vampire books often cover taboo subject matter, but Twilight is the only one to try and make it's weird gross shit seem normal and acceptable through the subtext of its lore and narrative.

    I’m pretty sure Twilight was never hated... ( unless by those who don’t read and only watch movies) high schools around the United States began having twilight parties. Now with the new book... it’s blown up all over again!!
    So your video is outdated buddy

      Nowhere near as weird as the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice tho, the main character that Tom Cruise plays in the movie fucks his mom, and they got a show on AMC right now. Anxiously awaiting the season three flashback season.
