Yea well Melody is straight up wrong! Alluka's existence has actually been implied since the debut of Kalluto, with people even being able to fully guess her name before it was stated, due to the naming scheme of the Zoldycks. Each sibling has a 3 syllable name, always with "llu" in the middle; the first syllable is the last syllable of the previous sibling's name, and the last syllable of their name becomes the first syllable of the next. I-llu-mi -> Mi-llu-ki -> Ki-llu-a. However, before Alluka was introduced, Kalluto's name wouldn't properly fit into this pattern. If the last syllable of "Killua" is "A," and the first syllable of "Kalluto" is "Ka," it would imply the existence of another sibling called "Alluka" in between to fit the pattern.

8:15 I actually don't think of Meruem's final moments as a "sad" moment, but a bittersweet moment. He dies in the arms of a loved one; perhaps as peaceful an end as a human being can hope for. And it completes his transformation from a monster into a good man. See, for me, THAT character arc supplied the story with contrast. In as much as Chimera Ant is about the human capacity for savagery, it's also about humanity emerging FROM savagery. In that respect, I've come to view it, first and foremost, as an anti-war story, about two groups of people both convinced of their own right to supremacy. And if only everyone was as willing to change as Meruem was, things might have been different. Even the best of us are capable of cruelty, and even the worst of us are capable of compassion. That is the balance I see in Chimera Ant.
That is what confused me when he said he liked contrast, because for me Chimera Ants, is the arcs with the mos contrast and the best implemented contrast in the series. I agree with all you say, and Meruem's death is not sad because of what you can remeber (and even so it can be sad just because of that); rather. It was sad because of what it could've been and what he had become, that's why is the saddest moment in the series. I enjoyed the videos though, cause instead of viewing rhem as analysis I just viewed them as commentary so that was okay.

Either rushed work to meet schedule, or he doesn't know what to say about Pariston. To be fair, Pariston is a pretty mysterious entity in this arc, and we only learn more of him as a character in the next arc.
@@lifeloverNorris he’s the main antagonist of the arc lol, Illumi is childs play next to him.. ignoring Pariston when reviewing this arc makes no sense.
@@lifeloverNorris Yeah, in this arc he’s kind of an enigma. Especially since, as you said, he barely gets any kind of exposition or resolution until the next arc, so why shortchange any of the threads that will get closure to talk about him. I would have liked at least one comment about him though.
One of the things I love most about HxH is how everything thought to be black-and-white, eventually becomes gray in a really subtle fashion: e.g. Hisoka, Chrollo, the Phantom Troupe, Pariston, and Ging should by all rights be considered horrible people morally. Yet the unique and cryptic way in which their stories and personalities are framed makes you oddly fascinated by at least interested in them.
I also love how the framing of characters is totally depending on the situation. As you said: The Phantom Troupe show a level of comradery and trust towards each other on a similar level as the Strawhats in One Piece do. Hell...they're mainly thieves (Pirates) aswell, who came together to find a home in meteor city. On the opposite end of that is Netero, who is a bored & passive old man the first time we meet him, with the only thing that gives him joy being battles with extremely formidable opponents. Both physical, aswell as mentally (Pariston). He isn't really that different from Hisoka, except that he is experienced enough to know that there are no/barely any people left in the world strong enough to fight him head on. All of the antagonists in HxH have shown themselves to be able to form strong bonds with other characters. Meanwhile lots of the protagonists constantly struggle with compassion. Some - Killua & Netero at the beginning - were also almost apathetic when it comes to the lives of other humans. I love this manga lol
.....Meruem dying is sad because he'd evolved so much in his time alive, by the time he dies he may no longer be a threat to humanity.....I guess Mark didn't catch on to that though. Oh, and that a total innocent died with him out of pure kindness.
Yeah he definitely grew as a character but it's still questionable whether or not he would've continued his world conquest if he hadn't have been poisoned and wasn't already on his death bed.
It could actually be argued that Alluka's existence was _very subtly_ hinted at by the names of her brothers. If you put them in order of age, they are Illumi, Milluki, Killua, (Alluka) and Kalluto. There's a trend to the names. The younger one's name starts with the end of the older one, and there's a LLU in the middle. I-LLU-MI MI-LLU-KI KI-LLU-A KA-LLU-TO. But without an A-LLU-KA between Killua and Kalluto, the chain is incomplete!
@@obedulloa6219 Well, the names are be written in katakana, but yeah it's pretty easy to see (probably would not be in kanji, actually). イルミ - ミルキ - キルア - アルカ - カルト
@@IceAokiji303 Awesome. Also I declare myself as ignorant and don't know the difference between kanji and katakana. Is katakana more like spelling and kanji more for concepts?
@@obedulloa6219 Pretty close yeah! Kanji are the more complex characters that can be used to reference words, parts of words, concepts, and so on, it's the writing system Japan got from China. Each Kanji can be read multiple (or at least 2) ways, depending on how it is used in a sentence or compound word. Hiragana and Katakana then are two additional sets of simpler-looking characters that are original to Japanese. Hiragana are the more rounded-looking ones, usually used for Japanese words, and especially suffixes where just Kanji aren't enough, and they are common as pronunciation aids in media aimed at younger audiences. Katakana are the more simple and sharp-looking ones, and are generally used for loan words or foreign names, as well as onomatopoeia or just wanting to make something look different (I think a few mangaka have made a specific character speak purely in Katakana to show that there's something weird about how they speak, like the character might be a foreigner with odd pronunciation, or a robot or AI or something of the sort). Each character corresponds to a specific spoken sound, usually either just a vowel, or a consonant+vowel (like Killua's name being written with the syllables KI-RU-A), and then there's N as its own thing (as the only consonant that can stand on its own without a following vowel), and a few extra ones that shove an H or Y in between, plus a couple more that either extend a preceding vowel, extend a following consonant, or change the consonant of the syllable it's attached to, like KA becoming GA or TO becoming DO. On the topic of those pronunciation guides I mentioned, those are usually referred to as Furigana. They are either small Hiragana or Katakana attached to the Kanji that they are supposed to clarify the pronunciation of. Some manga authors have some fun with these and give some things a non-standard pronunciation that can send a conflicting message from what the Kanji implies. I think Togashi did something like that with Netero's final words, but can't remember for sure. On that point, with Hunter X Hunter, there's actually something really fun that Togashi does with these (though not with Gon and Killua). Specifically, with the names of Nen abilities. Nen abilities tend to have a name written in Kanji with possibly some Hiragana mixed in if needed, but then the attached Furigana (given in Katakana) give it a totally unusual pronunciation, usually just straight up in English. For example, Hisoka's ability which has the properties of both rubber and gum, when written in Kanji, is 伸縮自在の愛 which should mean "Elastic Love", but the Furigana pronunciation guide attached to it is バンジーガム, "Banjii Gamu" or Bungee Gum. Or Morel's ability, 紫煙機兵隊 ("Purple Haze Soldiers") having the Furigana ディープパープル, "Diipu Paapuru", Deep Purple. And Kurapika's chain abilities all have a Kanji name that is along the lines of "descriptor of what the chain does - which finger the chain is attached to - chain", and then the Furigana giving an English name for it - so for example, 束縛する中指の鎖 "The Restraining Middle Finger Chain", チェーンジェイル "Cheen Jeiru", Chain Jail. Stuff like this is the trend for most Nen abilities we've seen. I just think it's neat how Togashi makes up these weird double names.

With it all complete now i gotta be honest, this review of HxH as a whole just wasn't it, and I wanna preface that I love Marks content his One Piece reviews slapped, but this didn't do HxH justice
One big issue I would give hxh is that thematicly the beginning and the main series are as different as night and day. Mark has totally fallen into it and mischaracterized soooo many moments because he doesn't identify many pay offs as such and just thinks of them as setup.
@@chasepene223 THATS SO NICE I never put it into words so I will do that here just so I can refine my opineon. Sorry but its long! I love Greed Island because of the card system. I think it is very thought out and super fun to think about. This makes rewatching the show a ton more fun since I am rewarded for knowing how well everything sticks together and how well thought out the world is. But thats not the perspective Mark took and thats not how the show advertises itself as in the beginning. From the first 2 arcs I expect a netflix and chill show with a focus on a emotion. I expect it to be like one piece. One piece can be destroyed if you investigate the world too much. But thats just a tradeof for making the show more binge-able. But the in heavens arena this same style of consuming the show suddenly becomes your enemy. NOW you need to understand how Nen works because from now on everything will build on it. If you lay back too much the show will appear super dry and boring. -Why are they talking so much? -Why are there no satisfying fights? -60 episodes for 1 arc and only a handful of relevant fights? Because now everything becomes more like Death note. There are clear rules and those don't always require physical combat. Knowing about those and beeing able to predict characters moves is insanely satisfying to me. It makes the world feel immersive if the characters and the magic stay true to their nature. But ofcourse! Thats the opposite of a show you can watch in your bed with music on or while cooking. To me it came natural since I love card games and I find it incredibly satisfying to see a well thought out story with attention to detail and creative powers. Mark on the otherhand seems to prefer the characters. After all his favourite part of onepiece was water 7. I think he falsely identified Nen as a distraction from Gon who he expected to be at the center of this show. Everything that happened had to do something to bring gon closer to ging. And in my opineon he is not totally wrong. If you only look at the very beginning then the show seems to work this way. Alright so if what I just said is correct then we can perfectly see why he disliked Greed Island. He criticised the arc for having the entire setting be irrelevant and unnecessarily complicated. Why? Because it distracts from Gon and Ging. But why does everyone else love this arc? Because the cards are awesome! It stands on its own. He said there is way to much exposition (setup) and only barely any payoff for for the card aspect. But to the core audience of hxh which love the complex but satisfying systems it establishes the setup itself is the payoff. Thats why we love new character reveals because they got new awesome powers. And thats why so many people love to learn about the cards. In the chimera ant arc this is dialed up to 110%. The narrator injects explanations and consistency into us. Everything makes so much sense. But ofcourse! It has little to do with gon and drags out the story. He completely ignores meleoron and ikalgo in all of his reviews and called them "walking plot conveniences". In the elction arc there is almost no combat anymore and it doesn't stop in the manga. And Mark didn't get any of it.
Unfortunately I think he had a problem seeing certain things. He also missed like 90% of the main themes in his part 5 Jojo review. Mark is an incredible analyst. He sometimes misses the mark (pun not intended) which I don't really hold against him. No one is perfect and I love his content!

Old comment but yeah. This is what happened at the end with JoJo Part 5 where he skipped over major character deaths and didn't go in depth with anything. He has a very specific type of story that he likes and the moment that something contradicts what he thought it would do, he dislikes it and does not try to understand what the other side has to say.

@@nichescenes calm down bruh. I love hxh but it's overrated by its idiot fans who say it's the gretest thing ever written. It's a very good story, but it's not all that special apart from some arcs.
I feel like one reason why mark feels a lack of enjoyment to this story is due to his big focus on the plot of "Gon finding his father" when the meat of the story is really about the characters, where the goal only serves to carve a way for the character centric storytelling, as ging once said "You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want." While finding ging was a goal, it was never the focus of the story, it is also why some fans are still anticipated about the story's future even though "Gon already found Ging"
Me and my roommate just finished watching through the 2011 anime. We would always joke that when Leorio learns Nen, his signature move would be "the Leorio Laser". When he made that bolt of lightning to create the portal in order to punch Ging, we both lost our minds, screaming "THE LEORIO LASER IS REAL!!!!!"
7:40-7:46 That's because you chose to ignore all the light hearted and positive moments in the Chimera Ant arc, like Reina's reunion with her mother or *KOMUGI"S ENTIRE CHARACTER* for example.
@@carsonspinks1067 Your comment is completely irrelevant to what I'm talking about. Mark claims that "the Chimera Ant arc was extremely negative with no breaks" and "One-note" which is objectively false. Komugi, Ikalgo, Welfin, Palm, Reina and others had positive character arcs with lots of optimistic and light hearted moments. Mark chose to ignore those characters and their moments for the sake of his little narrative and his misrepresentation of the arc. It's not a matter of opinion, what he said is just wrong.
@@MrM9819 I may be wrong but I believe that he said he didn't like ikalgo, or welfin, but he did say that he liked Komugi but the constant threatening of Komugi from Meruem during the beginning of their games isn't exactly light hearted. I think Gin is a bad dad yes but I feel you’ve completely misunderstood the character…..the most important message hxh gave was what Gin tried to teach Gon, basically enjoy the journey not the destination or it’s the detours and the people you meet to achieve a goal is more important than the goal itself and you didn’t even touch on it. Another issue I have is the fact that he didn’t comment much on Gon and Killuas friendship which I think is the best and most authentic in anime history…how they both reacted to saying good bye was definitely a point worthy to talk about
Marl admitted to what alot of people have been saying since his early reviews is he projected way too much of his personal experiences on the relationship of Ging and Gon
@@The810kid yea which is fine but not mentioning a huge aspect of a character is a bad review…he didn’t even mention Pariston as a character…I mean come on…really???
@@funkyfreshwizardry I think it is. I have a friend who's a fucking pussy and can't even stand gore, but he LOVED Berserk once he read it, it's now his favorite thing ever.
@@adrianpg4460 Well, unfortunately, he's already said he won't do Berserk or any other series that doesn't have a full anime adaptation. He wants anime footage for his videos, which makes sense - but I'm pretty sure any berserk fan would love using manga panels for the video anyway; especially with art as beautiful as Berserk's.
Not even going lie, this probably was Mark's weakest series review. Kind of was disappointed. I'm not a huge fan of HxH, but I definitely feel like it didn't get the same love and treatment as the One Piece review or even the Jojo review. It started off with that love, but the last 3 arcs felt idk how to explain how I feel about it Like this video for example, Mark didn't even touch on the major plot elements of the story. He still never talked about why Gon ended up in the hospital bandage up in the first place lol He never talked about what made Alluka special and how that power may have connections to the the next's arcs plot the dark continent. I was hoping he touched on the imagery that was shown when Alluka killed someone. Instead he talked about One Piece for 3 mins lol. He didn't even touch on the dynamic that Ging and Partisan has. He didn't talk about how the theme of the committee is based on the Chinese zodiac and how Ging's animal the boar pretty much gives you an idea of his character. Like I find it hard to believe he love the series, when the last 3 arc reviews he barely talked about the series lol. Like man I feel like the last two arc reviews were pretty disappointing. I'm looking forward to the next series he review, because man this didn't look good at all. Lord I hope it's not MHA.
I'd honestly say the last 4 arcs because the York new City arc could have been done better as well Melody and the rest of the group Kurapika worked for didn't even get mentioned.
I never read jojo, so can't say anything about those reviews, but i felt pretty disappointed with OP reviews as well. I feel like mark has set a pretty much impossible schedule, where he doesn't even have time to take in the material and properly analyse it.
@@The810kid Yeah it's like he skipped around a A LOT of plot. Like how the hell didn't he find the chairman election plot interesting in the chairman election arc lmao. Honestly I love Leorio, but I had to disagree that without Leorio the arc wouldn't be good. Just Killua family plot alone was interesting story dumps.
@@zabi_aka Yes, but even with OP he went back and did videos explaining and discussing varies pieces he missed. He even took a break and came back and talked about OP. Every video on OP he would discuss something he missed or that his editor pointed out. You can tell he REALLY enjoyed One Piece with how it's basically become his shonen measuring stick over Dragon ball. He did the same thing with Jojo as well. He took breaks during these longer shonen series to soak it in and came back and enjoyed the rest of the series and did more analyzing of the story. He didn't do this with HxH. With HxH it seems like after the first arc he seemed like he was just forcing himself to continue and the cracks fully showed during the CA arc where he skipped over complete plot points, Easter eggs, events that setup future events, etc. Like I pointed out he still didn't talk about why Gon wanted to kill Pitou. Hell he didn't even talk about the most shonen part of the series when Gon beat Pitou with his detached arm. He never really talked about Nen abilities either after Yorknew. It's like he just felt forced and wasn't interested in the series anymore. I'm surprised more hardcore HxH fans aren't more vocal. I'm glad they're respecting his opinion. Like Mark is still one of my favorite manga review channels. I respect his opinion, but man I'm disappointed in this one.
That... Was unusually short and completely skipped a lot of the plot... I guess it touched Mark alot for him to completely zone in on specific parts of the story like that and ignore others entirely. Namely as "editor-san" has said Pariston and Kite, but also Hisoka and the multiple confrontations between Illumi and Killua. Still the way this part was covered feels a lot different than the rest of both this show and the recent reviews in general... odd...
um Mark, when did Ging ever say that having friends was a weakness? dude has plenty of friends himself hell he even made greed island with a group of friends of his and when talking with Gon he told him that the greatest treasure he found was the friends he made along the way. You clearly have misunderstood his character
@@hrafnknutsson2859 Knowing Mark's experiences based off this video. I think that is a fair interpretation his Ging's actions. Paints Ging as more morally gray but that's just my opinion.
he took like one element frm a single scene and made that a major focal point of the character, regardless of whether that character actually ever states that belief going forward or if it matches his personality.
I was utterly amazed watching your One Piece review series. Your commentary on and analysis of One Piece was well-argued, insightful, nuanced, and in-depth enough that it made me see One Piece in an entirely new light. I have been reading One Piece since 2011, for over half of my entire life now, and after watching your reviews it is an entirely new series to me. With these Hunter x Hunter reviews I just feel none of that. It feels like rather than taking the time to really think-through what Hunter x Hunter is, what it says about Shonen as a genre and how it twists and - at times - elevates its typical tropes, asking yourself *why* it is that this series is so beloved like you so eloquently answered in your One Piece reviews... it feels like you just talked about what interested you, about what you like and didn't like, but without any deeper analysis of the series. It feels like you judge it for what you want it to be, not for what it is. That's fine! I don't even necessarily disagree with most of what you have to criticize about Hunter x Hunter, I think your reasons for disliking parts of it are very well explained. But you spend so much time justifying your dislike that you forget to actually review the story itself, and this video is the extreme of that issue with this series *as review.* I love hearing you talk about how much you love Leorio, because I love Leorio, and because Ging totally deserved way worse. But as other people have VERY justifiably pointed out... you leave out way too much in favor of only talking about what you liked and continuing to defend your opinion on the Chimera Ant arc. The level of investment you have in the story of One Piece vs. Hunter x Hunter is apparent, and I'm not criticizing you for liking one series more than another, I'm criticizing what seems like - from my perspective - letting how much you personally liked a series prevent you from treating a series with the same level of scrutiny and the same brilliance of analysis that you've more than shown yourself capable of.
I'm probably too harsh here given my own enjoyment of Hunter x Hunter, but I 100 % will stand by that Hunter x Hunter has just as much nuance and complexity in its narrative, its narrative structure, and in its creative and innovate usage of the shonen genre as a vehicle for telling a story, as One Piece does. I just am failing to grasp here how, even disliking the series, none of that was picked up upon in these reviews.
@@evangonzalez9074 He pretty much asked for it mocking the narration (which is a somewhat controversial element but also a highly praised one) while also ignoring half the characters and development. I think people overdid it but the criticism was warranted, that particular episode was just pure scorn at the series just because of basic-ass "nooooo you have to show not telllllll" complaints while also failing to elaborate on anything the arc does show (like Youpi's character development being displayed through his literal bodily transformations, the narration just adding more context to his reasoning and understanding. Hell, I don't remember if he even said Youpi's name the whole review).
I'm just surprised to see how little of the story actually got through to Mark. Feels like the expectations and how he thinks something should be really ruined the experience for him. At least we know he's honest
i honestly think hxh is a story you should read at your own pace, trying to really understand everything and get into the character's point of view. When i first read it, I thought it was great, but I didn't try to actually understand why characters did certain things, or why Togashi took decisions like reviving Gon and Kite, i read it all with a shonen perspective and missed a lot of the nuance.
people are not going to judge you for loving Leorio, everyone does. they're jusging. you for not liking chimera arc. It's polarizing but widely regarded as great.
14:34 I thought it was clear that Ging doesn't actually think that relying on friends is a weakness. After he states that, the operator asks him if the real reason is that he is too shy to meet Gon's friends, and Ging just dismisses that and tells her "just do what I said" implying he was embarassed.
Oof.. this was rushed. Nothing on Tsubone and the other butler. Nothing on the Zoldyk dynamik. No mention of the famous Hisoka/Illumi moment. No mention of Pariston. The reunion of Gon and Ging effectively skipped. Idk what was going in your life at that time, or what occupied your mind, but I think after you were disappointed in part 2 of the ant arc you shut down and werent rly open to the manga and its underlying motives. I was very excited about this review but maybe I was spoiled by the deep and profound analysis from the absoult genius that is Alexcander. Check out his videos if you want a deeper insight into this manga. It seems to me Mark felt the need to finish this series because it was so highly requested but I honestly doubt he wanted to. Hard to watch at the end.
There was clear signs he had been losing interest all the way back in yorknew. Each review became less in depth with many key parts being omitted. Each review felt more rushed both in terms of script and clearly him reading the story. I feel his philosophy on writing ingrained into him by other Mangas made this hard for him to enjoy due to his preconceived thoughts on how writing should be done. He clearly misunderstood/misinterpreted certain details of the story or flat out read them wrong. I was very upset by this review solely due to the fact he is usually incredibly analytical and perfectly captures the flaws and upsides of most series he reads. He appreciates and notices small details and fully comprehends themes, messages, and characters. However I feel this was a double edged sword because now he is pretty much known for and feels expected to review these stories as such. Overall this review only proved to me he had little interest and decided to simply rush it out the gate simply because he felt obligated at this point.
It saddened me when he discredits Meruem's character by saying he was a brief character who played bored games and whatever or something like that. You have to look deeper than that to see his worth and value as a character. Meruem's and Komugi's respective changes and growth through their experience and interactions with each other was most lovely in my opinion. Meruem develops kindness and Komugi starts to slowly fix up her broken self esteem because of his company, this dynamic that they have is what we should be looking into. How delicate Meruem's actions where towards her and how she chose to stay with him till their dying breaths, things like this are what makes their delicate relationship so beautiful. And because it was so brief, that it left so many people truly empty by end of it. What I stated was only surface level so I don't understand how anyone could gloss over this. He also says that the theme and subject was nothing new, not something he hasn't talk about with his friends he says. But that's not what matters, what matters is how it was executed and handled. Chimera ant was a work of art in my opinion. Edit: I don't mean anything bad I truly love love this videos but this was something that really and truly bugged me.
Pariston was by far the most entertaining part of this arc. Not the most compelling (that was Killua's plotline IMO), but the most entertaining. He was constantly coming up with new bullshit and making the whole election proccess as miserable as he could, basically for no other reason than for laughs (and because he believes it's what Netero would have wanted). It's funny seeing his and Ging's back and forth and Cheadle just wanting everything to fucking end already.
8:00 What the heck Mark?! Just because you’ve talked about a topic before with friends doesn’t somehow diminish the statement a fictional work can have on it. There’s something unique about tackling philosophy through different mediums like books, shows, music etc. that is inherently unique from conversations. Just found it a weird critique, but if you feel that’s your experience then that’s your experience 🤷♂️
Not to mention he probably hasn't. Like yea Mark we've all talked about whether human bonds and feelings of individuality should be removed in order to create a superior species that could create a better, more loving and peaceful kingdom on earth, and whether humans are morally right or wrong on allowing or not allowing that to happen
I know it's supposed to be HIS reaction and that he's allowed to focus on whatever he wants and he owes us nothing and all that. But his HxH reviews were sort of disappointing tbh, specially towards the end, he glossed over so much stuff that it made it look like he couldn't be bothered to pay attention to the manga. Even the stuff that he DID touch on, it felt to me like he didn't give himselft enough time to talk about them. These videos felt like the times I would write something for school about a book I couldn't be bothered to read and only read a summary of.
Problem is that if he wasn't doing reviews for this series he would have just dropped it a long while ago, probably around the start of the chimera ant arc, so it does just feel unnatural and forced. Just dragging himself through it because he needs to finish his TH-cam series.
I’d think probably the part that might get you most is going to be related to Killua and his growth or the resolution of the Gon content. And as a very experienced long time HxH fan, if you don’t love and adore the role and presence of Leorio within the story arcs he’s present in, then you’re missing something as a fan in my opinion. Leorio is a very interesting character because of how he acts and what decisions he makes. I think he’s a super important and lovable character.
I would love to see your thoughts on Berserk at some point. Kentaro Miura’s art, careful storytelling, and paneling really elevate it to the next level. I understand it might be more difficult to cover on TH-cam because of its more graphic and adult themes, but I think it would be worth it.
Going by things he said, I figure he wouldn't like it. Berserk is not a somewhat lighthearted shonen, and Mark seems to somewhat dislike these more bleak things
I love that this series ended with a Leorio thumbnail. Felt complete having all the main characters (some for certain arcs) get their thumbnail for these reviews
I really liked this arc, Ging was great and his interactions were interesting, hisoka came back (and killed Gotoh(rip) ) , Killuas family dynamic was intriguing, the zodiacs gave more depth to the hunter association and gons convo w his dad was satisfying and it set up the dark continent which we may never see but is very promising nonetheless.
I like how Mark analyses and reviews stories, especially cause of his appreciation for how manga is made (in utilization of visuals and panels). Honestly would like to see him review more praised manga, especially the likes of Berserk. Dunno if he would because of how dark it gets, but if that wouldn't deter him, I'd deffo love to see a review of that
I dont think he would do well with Berserk considering how he felt about the Chimera Ant arc If he felt so devastated by it I cant even imagine what the Eclipse would do to him
Berserk does have it's glimmers of hope spread throughout the story though, and so did the chimera ant arc with komugi, meruem, killua, ikalgo, and etc., I think AOT has a very consistent darker tone than both berserk and hunter x hunter and he didn't seem to have a problem with that so idk
I wouldn't say AOT has a more hopeless tone than Berserk. Spoilers.....(if mark does happen to read it) . . . . . . . . Atleast not until the Falcon of the Millennium Arc, every arc before is more or less more rough for our protagonist as opposed to AOT. But both of you got good points, we just really aughta wait and see. Ngl tho, part of me wants it cause I've just been sulking in Berserk content for weeks now since the incident and would really like to see Mark analyse it.
I'm not saying Berserk doesnt have hopeful moments, I just think it's despair moments hit much harder than both the chimera ants and ATO So I'm not sure if Mark is prepared for that considering how he felt about HxH, it might be more than what he bargained for
Meruem turning more and more human through the matches against komugi, not understanding what is happening to himself because of his human side reaching its peak against his final match against her was easily the best moment in the entire hxh and even with your explanation i dont understand your view point. it seems to me you dont like "sad" emotions and thats why you dont connect to those scenes.
I don’t feel that’s it at all. Just because someone doesn’t respond the way you do to certain scenes doesn’t mean they don’t connect with them. Everything is subjective anyway. You may feel the final match with Komugi to be the best scene in the show, but others may not
Honestly I think that people need to get that not everyone connected with this arc emotionally and that's perfectly okay. As a HxH fan I think we need to stop being so damn elitist about our series . Anytime somebody says anything remotely critical about the chimera ant arc or the series in general people will immediately insult the viewers intelligence or taste because "it's so perfect how could you not like it" I'm not accusing you of doing this per say but it seems to be a trend I see a lot with beserk, Hunter X Hunter and attack on titan fans
Shame there was no Paristan appreciation in terms of his parallels with Ging, I suspect it/he comes off a lot better in the anime, but aside from that- cool video! Appreciated the Leorio appreciation!
Hey mark or not mark just found you the other day and you probably won’t see this seeing as I’m 7 months late. But thank you for making this series I don’t relate with you with your brother. But I hope your plan was to make people feel like they have seen the show for the first time again because that is exactly what you did for me and I’ve never found someone able to do that. So just want to say thank you.
The arc is very good and all and is very complex but it can be a pain to read through. Sometimes, you wish the chapter ends early as the way it's presented makes it a bore to read through. Even novels are better at capturing my attention than this arc and I like reading Novels. Even Reading it in Novel form would've been better than this IMO. Also it tries to do too many things at the same time and it affects the sort a bit.
@@adrianpg4460 Agreed. A lot of it could be done better and all this world building is too much to put in to one or 2 arcs. I believe the constant hiatuses are partly to blame as he can get new ideas in between them and force everything to coalesce into the next chapter he plans to make. It’s better to have it be slowly built up like in one piece. If HxH had enough been done the way something like Magi was, then it’d be a lot more bearable and would make the manga a lot better. I still rate it (HxH) 9/10 but if it were done better like how I mentioned, than I’d put it near One Piece which I have at 9.6/10. I still rate HxH as the third best manga though and Magi just behind it but I think Magi was HxH done right in a way ( for most of the series, but the end was rushed and there were a fair few problems with it and that’s why I rated it a bit lower than HxH. Another manga t(manhwa in this case) I recommend like magi is Tower of God as it goes through the same type of philosophically deep characters in this weird and complex world with worldbuilding almost One piece level.
Fullmetal alchemist should be the next series you should review. It has gripping story, fantastic characters, and paneling is amazing. Plus it has two anime series and it can be great to see which of the two did left impact. My on brotherhood.
My emotionally breaking moment was different but for similar reason. For me, it was the exchange between Killua and Nanika. It hit me in the feels for the same reason I loved the Chimera ant arc. Just like Ging connected you to your brother, Alluka/Nanika and the Chimera Ant arc touched on a major theme of my childhood too: "If I do something others don't approve of, will I still deserve go be loved or accepted anymore?" I spent alot of my childhood feeling like I had to develop myself into a perfect example of what a person should be, but I instinctively knew how impossible that was. But it affected my ability to forgive myself for having desires and preferences I knew I shouldn't promote even though I never acted on them. Seeing Killua treat Nanika like a person deserving of love despite everyone else seeing her as a threat to their peace of mind really called to me. Then when Killua told Nanika to go away forever and the monster with the abyss eyes actually broke down from the rejection but accepted banishment anyways out of still loving Killua... That broke me. This moment just like the Chimera Ant arc showed me that the messed up stuff you might have done doesn't dictate who you are. It's why and how you did it that makes you a monster or not. Even Netero had to ignore his own gradual change of heart in order to attack Meruem. I feel like I lost the impact of my point somewhere but I'm gonna post this anyways lol
So now that this is done, do you know why the show is called Hunter x Hunter? in the beginning leorio and kurapika tell gon what kind of hunters they want to be and ask gon what kind of hunter he wants to be. we meet bounty hunters, food hunters, gem hunters, money hunters, but gon is hunting his dad, a hunter. gon is a hunter hunter.
I’ve disagree with ya on a lot of points throughout this series but I’ve highly enjoyed your reviews regardless for the series and hearing a difference of opinion
I guess Meruem seemingly starting to turn into a more moral good character wasn't enough to sadden you of his passing, despite all the good he showed as he interacted with Komugi.
I have to say Mark you’ve done a fantastic job tackling this series. You’ve done a great job not trying to side with the fans on every aspect. When all the HxH fans ask you get into the series all of them were probably ready to hear you say how the “2011 adaptation is perfect and kicks the 1999 version out the water” and expect you to say how the “Chimera Ant arc is the greatest arc in existence.” But instead not only did you prefer the 1999 series on several occasions but you also said that the Chimera Ant arc wasn’t always great and was even boring for a good chunk out of it. I bet you surprised and even disappointed a lot of fans here but I highly respect you for giving your real opinion and not just jump on the bandwagon. Either way they’ll learn to respect you more for doing that and keep it up more all of these videos were a joy to watch !!
As a hunter x hunter fan I agree that his opinion should be respected. While I do have a lot of negative things to say about his review on the chimera ant arc I can respect where he is coming from.
Thanks for sticking with me this Hunter Hunter review series!

Jesus fuck I never noticed that.

His sentence about the Chimera ant arc in particular: "the philosophy is interesting but, nothing that i haven't explored through conversations in the late hours of the night with close friends"
First: wtf are you talking about with your close friends.
If it's about analysis sure, but i can't exactly see the Chimera ant arc themes to be just... Something you talk about with friends like that. Maybe at a philosophy talk in school or again, during the analysis of some show or book that deals with exactly that, but without that input, how do you even reach those discussions? Either he glossed over some of the more interesting points of the chimera ant arc, or he's got a pretty non-standard relationship with his friends.

Its totally okay to not resonate with something as much as others, but I feel like the effort just wasn’t put into this as the series went on. He didn’t even mention Pariston, one of the highlights of the arc hands down. And he didn’t even mention Gon and Killua’s goodbye (I consider their friendship one of the strongest pieces of the entire story). I actually don't think of Meruem's final moments as a "sad" moment, but a bittersweet moment.

@@War_Maker then again, is this video a summary of what happened, or an exploration of Mark's reactions (thoughts and feelings) to this arc?
I mean they are horrible people, theres no ambiguity about it. But they're familial bond is nice

Damn bro, that must look even clearer in kanji
@@IceAokiji303 You're the real cap man. The explanation was more than complete, was educative and I'm immensely thankful for it cause now I understand a lot more.

I don’t think you resonated with this series the way most have which is completely fine.
Facts I also think it as Gin wanting Gon to be prepared for the new world
@@comicgames3962 yea Gin actually invested a lot of effort into setting things up for Gon and he’s actually expressed love for Gon in his own way like when he told the dodgeball guy can’t remember his name that he can’t kill is son…he made an entire game to train Gon lol

He wants anime footage for his videos, which makes sense - but I'm pretty sure any berserk fan would love using manga panels for the video anyway; especially with art as beautiful as Berserk's.
If Chimera Ant was too negative for him then he has no reason to read Berserk. Shit, fucking Claymore would still be too much for him.
@@adrianpg4460 hxh is not that dark
Not even going lie, this probably was Mark's weakest series review. Kind of was disappointed. I'm not a huge fan of HxH, but I definitely feel like it didn't get the same love and treatment as the One Piece review or even the Jojo review. It started off with that love, but the last 3 arcs felt idk how to explain how I feel about it
Like this video for example, Mark didn't even touch on the major plot elements of the story.
@@yep_itsmeagain 100% agree
Sorry not "disliking the series," but not enjoying it as much as with One Piece.

I thought it was clear that Ging doesn't actually think that relying on friends is a weakness.

In short yeah I agree this hurt to watch
Agree with the both of you wholeheartedly
Old comment but yeah. This is what happened at the end with JoJo Part 5 where he skipped over major character deaths and didn't go in depth with anything. He has a very specific type of story that he likes and the moment that something contradicts what he thought it would do, he dislikes it and does not try to understand what the other side has to say.
When he said his character is brief, he’s talking in the sense of he’s only been introduced in that arc.

He did post on twitter Volume 1 of Berserk, so maybe

I don't think Berserk is for him, he should do something else maybe something like Fullmetal would work better for him to review.

Honestly lerorio becoming a zodiac member just because of punching ging is the best moment the arc for me chief
What do you think of Kite's revival? I remember alot of people complaining about him returning.
I like how Mark analyses and reviews stories, especially cause of his appreciation for how manga is made (in utilization of visuals and panels). Honestly would like to see him review more praised manga, especially the likes of Berserk.
Dunno if he would because of how dark it gets, but if that wouldn't deter him, I'd deffo love to see a review of that
I dont think he would do well with Berserk considering how he felt about the Chimera Ant arc
If he felt so devastated by it I cant even imagine what the Eclipse would do to him
Berserk does have it's glimmers of hope spread throughout the story though, and so did the chimera ant arc with komugi, meruem, killua, ikalgo, and etc., I think AOT has a very consistent darker tone than both berserk and hunter x hunter and he didn't seem to have a problem with that so idk

I don’t feel that’s it at all. Just because someone doesn’t respond the way you do to certain scenes doesn’t mean they don’t connect with them. Everything is subjective anyway. You may feel the final match with Komugi to be the best scene in the show, but others may not

Succession war arc is honestly one of the best manga reading experiences I ever had
its awful
It's very meaty arc thats why
Ging wasn't actually caught off guard by the punch. He saw it coming from a mile away and let lori punch him anyway.

My emotionally breaking moment was different but for similar reason. For me, it was the exchange between Killua and Nanika. It hit me in the feels for the same reason I loved the Chimera ant arc. Just like Ging connected you to your brother, Alluka/Nanika and the Chimera Ant arc touched on a major theme of my childhood too: "If I do something others don't approve of, will I still deserve go be loved or accepted anymore?"
I spent alot of my childhood feeling like I had to develop myself into a perfect example of what a person should be, but I instinctively knew how impossible that was.
I feel like I lost the impact of my point somewhere but I'm gonna post this anyways lol
well described, also with the nanika thing i also really appreciate how it can double as a metaphor for her transness

Ging's "lamenting over Gon's over reliance on his friends" was an excuse by Ging. The lady in the game said he was actually just very shy.
I guess Meruem seemingly starting to turn into a more moral good character wasn't enough to sadden you of his passing, despite all the good he showed as he interacted with Komugi.
Put this video in your playlist, yo. Almost missed this finale.
I have to say Mark you’ve done a fantastic job tackling this series. You’ve done a great job not trying to side with the fans on every aspect. When all the HxH fans ask you get into the series all of them were probably ready to hear you say how the “2011 adaptation is perfect and kicks the 1999 version out the water” and expect you to say how the “Chimera Ant arc is the greatest arc in existence.”
But instead not only did you prefer the 1999 series on several occasions but you also said that the Chimera Ant arc wasn’t always great and was even boring for a good chunk out of it.
