I don't think people realize just how amazing this piece of work is? Towards the end they were double tracking I've heard this song thousands of times and missed it until listening today just absolutely brilliant
When u consider when this was recorded and the limited technology they had compared to today u have to say this track is phenomenal,it must have been a pain in the arse to put together but the maticulous nature of Pink Floyd made sure we got this epic opus 🕙🕞🌖🔺🇬🇧
This is my favorite Pink Floyd track. It's so rich in... pretty everything :-) Lots of music genres, lots of instruments, great composition etc. Hard to express how I feel listening to this. There's also a part in the song that is really cacaphonic - you can hear a few different melodies that do not fit together, but they all come at one moment to create a harmony once again - absolutely great.
Luke Wagstaff this whole song. I really love it, it was hard for me to get used to it at first but I still loved it. I didn’t understand why it was called Atom Heart Mother.
@@kingamoeboid3887 The reason why it's called Atom Heart Mother is quite hilarious : Roger Waters took a newspaper lying around and skimmed through it. Eventually, his eyes landed on an article about a woman with heart problems who had a pacemaker installed, and the article's title was "Atom Heart Mother". Roger said : "This". "This is the song's name".
Hoo boy, you've hit the (atom heart) motherlode with this one. I'd recommend 'A Saucerful of Secrets' also By PF seeing as you enjoy their long ones. Listening to it again, there was a small portion of it which reminded me of 'the devil's triangle' by King Crimson, which was released earlier in 1970 (same year as this song); but a lot of this is a pretty unique experiment by the Floyd.
I would also love to see your reaction to A Saucerful of Secrets - but the Pompeii version is DEFINITELY the one to go for. It's a long instrumental, and quite challenging to start with - Pink Floyd have stated that it is a musical depiction of a battle and it is divided into four sections: The build up before the battle begins, the actual battle, the finding of the fallen afterwards and finally the mourning of the dead. Thanks again DC for a great reaction to AHM.
@@kamhlaba But surely the Pompeii "Saucerful" is one of the weaker ones - it actually marks the point when they started to tire of it, and from that point on, either they were either hurrying through the noisier half or virtually making it a drum solo. The best "Saucerful"s other than the studio version are those very stretched out, reveling-in-textures, versions from 1968-1970 (like the Fillmore one, or the Paris one).
Early Floyd is definitely unappreciated and underrated compared to their later ventures. Give "Summer '68" from the same album a try, absolutely fantastic song written by Richard Wright. Amazing reaction as always.
Another great version of this is their broadcast on KQED from 1970. It’s shortened since there are no backing vocals or orchestra. Still, they jam hard and David Gilmour (guitarist and vocalist) and Rick Wright (keyboardist and vocalist) sing harmony vocals on it, absolutely amazing.
Congratulations on getting so much from this track at the first attempt. AHM isn't the easiest or most accessible of Floyd's works, but it's worth revisiting every so often, not only to enjoy the music, but also to appreciate their innovation and willingness to push the boundaries.
0:46 -- We can feel the pressure on your shoulders, you are like _"Oh my ... this is Pink Floyd, and I don't know this album ... what they are gonna do to me this time?! I'm gonna cry, be happy, be angry, be sad? How I'm gonna react? I'm scared!"_ Pink Floyd has always been so mysterious, so deep, so "personal" so to speak. This is why it's always almost "frightening" to listen to a "new" album. Like discovering another galaxy. We react like little kids who discover the world for the first time, but in the end; it's always an enrichment, a really unique personal experience, and emotions that only Pink Floyd can provide you for the rest of your life. In fact, every album of Pink Floyd is like an inner sanctum, a private world where nobody expects you have access. At 22:47 -- Yes, you're right. It sounds almost like an Ennio Morricone music, like an old western Spaghetti western movie made by Sergio Leone from the 1970s, or a cheesy movie with Ben Spencer & Terence Hill almost, when the hero saves the town because he's a good person, and when everyone is happy again! And the end at 24:03 was just the ultimate relief!!
The very best way to listen is with headphones and in a room totally dark .....You will go deeper into your imagination ......Not just this track but all Floyd albums in there entirety ........ Your life will never be the same .... Welcome to the Floyd Galaxy
DCcookster. Thanks for reacting to this piece of music. You asked if there were any live versions of Atom Heart Mother. There are a few, as already commented on. Special to me is Pink Floyd- Atom Heart Mother Live Hyde Park 1970 because i travelled a couple of hundred miles to be at this free festival in Hyde Park. It was indescribable experiencing Pink Floyd that day, also Roy Harper. This video is in black and white and, if i am not mistaken was Floyd's debut of Atom Heart Mother.
This track contains the most spine tinkling slide guitar/ guitar piece starting at 21.18. It is right up there with Dave Gilmour’s best work. It never fails to move me, even after 40 years of listening to this album
I can't even begin to say how much I love the song! BTW I think you're the first person to ever do a reaction to this song now watch everybody copy. This song makes me so happy when I hear it I can't even explain why probably because it sounds like angels singing
There are live versions of this, mostly without the orchestra and choir. Though most of those are not high quality, some are good enough to hear Gilmour filling in those (rather large missing) bits with his extraordinary guitar playing. By the way; this is what got Pink Floyd invited to the Montreux Classical Music Festival in (I guess) 1970.
Their is a tribute band that played this at Pompeii which is a must see!,Good news is their is alot of live video of AHM on the Early years boxed set. Shine ON.
Congrats, for reaching this point in PF music. This is the point in their journey where Pink Floyd 'found their footing' after exploring the avenue towards long, melodic, not always easy to listen to, modern equivalents of classical symphonies through experiments like: Careful with that axe Eugene, Astronomy Domine, Set the controls for the heart of the sun, Embryo. Now.... You are part of the Pink Floyd fold .... (although there is no such thing)

Always interesting to hear their early works, though I'm often left scratching my head. They weren't afraid to experiment......LOL
This is one of those tracks where you just want to let your imagination go wild and get taken on a journey. It's like an action adventure film. In my version there are forest elves that return to save the group from disaster when they encounter a savage tribe, but one of the group is fatally injured in the ensuing action scene, and is sure to die...
I love this album...it has an ethereal quality...I love also the side b of the album....next album for you is:'' The piper at the gates of dawn''.then I tell you something you might not know, Pink Floyd collaborated with Roland Petit ballet...outstanding, check the older versions....cheers!

One of their best, but the band hated the song. It was also a bitch to record apparently, judging by their interviews. Especially getting the timing right in combination with the choir and orchestra.
To be fair...(I love it when you say that) ...this is one of the post Syd Barrett... Pre-"Dark Side of the Moon".... era of music-making...when Pink Floyd had no direction. No one knew how to write a hit song. They were missing Sid and for a few albums just noodling around, trying to find their new way. This is one of those albums. I haven't heard it in a while because I don't listen to it. Of course I can appreciate it... I've taken LSD to it.... But definitely not an album I would be pushing on someone to react to.

Lulubelle 111 - to often neglected!
Sorrow got blocked
DCcookster Side two is the far most relaxed PF part of all their records. Worth to listen in one blow on a quiet sunday morning.
ummagumma album goooooooood :)))) very psycho
WHERES THE FOURTH REACTION
It was Sorrow, but it got deleted because of copyright.
Music for a western? Why not Batman? :)
One of their best, but the band hated the song. It was also a bitch to record apparently, judging by their interviews. Especially getting the timing right in combination with the choir and orchestra.
Roger Waters always apologizes for this album. Also, Ummagumma. I think he doesn't realize how good they actually are. Ummagumma is a classic!
Wow, speech to text really buggered that up a bit.
This is a good version it reminds me of echoes, maybe because it is lol
