I wanna get some of those seeds to save for the future. I wanna climb that tree too. I wish us humans did not cut-down trees everywhere like the rain forest and such. It's amazing that we have a seed bank we should have a several of them around the world!
I collect them locally to me, theres 4 large Redwoods and on stormy days the cones fall when green. I collect these and let them dry out. Ive collected hundereds of seeds and have my own collection growing. Find some redwoods locally im sure you can do the same.
there was a time when ancient sequoia sempervirens close to 4,000 years old were the largest trees on earth. however, after extensive logging from the 1800s and onwards have decimated their populations and most of these magnificent coastal redwoods are now gone. today, the largest by volume trees are Sequoiadendron giganteum or giant sequoias because they were saved from logging because they were so brittle that when cut down they would shatter on impact with the ground. today, the largest tree is general sherman at 57,000 cubic feet. if you want to then google the lindsey creek tree. it was estimated at 90,000 cubic feet, the largest tree by volume ever in history, and a coastal redwood. the largest tree ever with photographic evidence is the crannell creek giant at 70,000 cubic feet, also a coastal redwood. these of course were exceptions and it is likely that the average giant sequoia has always been larger than the average coastal redwood even before logging, but we may never know.
@@aden7146 hello Aden, I recently collected some for the first time . I found some dried cones, will some of the seeds be viable? I also collected 4 green cones. 2 I left out to dry naturally, and 2 I put in the oven to open the seeds (like replicating a forest fire). I’ve kept all the seeds seperate to see what germination success I have. They are stratifying and I’ll germinate in spring. Are green cones the most viable seeds in your experience? I have grown sequoia over the last 4/5 years. Every year I get so much better/efficient at it. I’ve had to buy my seeds online every year so far, but this time I get to try it from my own collected seeds.
@@BigCroca thats fascinating - there are similar stories with several species of eucalyptus. They were all cut down, but when measured and recorded in logging journals the measurements taken were far larger than any recorded tree in todays time…there’s even articles written about people cutting down enormous eucalyptus possibly thousands of years old, just to see how tall they were… so sad. Here in Australia there is only a handful of old growth trees, and compared to what was cut down at settlement, they probably would not have been considered old growth at the time as there were so many older, bigger trees. It only leaves the mind to wonder about what some of the old growth around the world would have been like… the coast redwood is such a mighty tree, I cant even imagine even bigger coast redwood than what exists today! Incredible and sad.

I hope someone hears this. You can have the most perfect genetics of the last white rhino but unless you have the biological life that was in the soil and plants that fed and informed the white rhinos gut you won't have quite the same animal and maybe not the animal at all. Imagine humans as we're finally understanding without a fully literate gut life and we're prone to so many more diseases. Along with sampling of seeds from these great trees there should also be a sampling of the soil be brought and seeded into the new medium.
Interesting point, the connection the trees have to that particular soil and the soil life/mycorrhizal fungi in that region…I can only imagine is completely essential Ben
Funny they were referred to as natures skyscrapers...I was wondering if 4 sequoias would support the weight of a skyscraper. Then places could integrate nature into construction instead of treating trees like an enemy that should be eradicated like CALIFORNIANS do. Of all the places that have no right to chime in about tree conservation. Seriously instead of storing those seeds...how about planting them? Sequoias use to grow along the west coast all the way to Alaska. There's no danger of running out of sequoia seed. The only threat to sequoias is the real estate market.
💧I cried at the end!💧
points for the cameraman who also climbed to the top of that tree :DD
What an beautiful tree
Whales, Shark and the Sequoia are a few true dinosaurs living today
Our greatest challenge may be getting down from the treetop
Amazing. My favourite tree.

Hay que sembrar secuoias .en todo el mundo
❤
A biologist is also a good climber.
Are seeds being planted now? Why wait….
why dont they do all this shit for redwoods? redwoods have the potential to get even larger than giant sequoias and they're more in danger too!

make more robot animal
Thousands years old foliage? Person clearly do not understand how plants grow.
Marius M that tree is most def over 1,000 years old....
the unnamed big basin bristlecone pine was 5,067 years old and the oldest single stem non clonal tree ever.
Guy meant the needs fall off and get replaced. So the three is old, but the foliage is not.
