    One thing about Uncle Jerry is he could play so freely and beautiful like is was a natural instinct. I can't wait until I can play this freely and forget about all the things that bring us all down in the world and hopefully be able to take others away with such masterful playing. Your videos are like a blessing and a heavy inspiration to get to the next level. Thanks so much man.

      Thanks for your very kind comment! The idea is to share what I know and hopefully get folks a little further down the road…toward whatever musical goals they’re shooting for. Then they can implement their versions of my ideas, of Garcia’s ideas….And the cycle can keep repeating itself.

    Best playing and explanation of anyone doing playing or lessons on Dead/Garcia. Shows how to get Jerry's grime (Jacksnax calls it sourness here) to the tone and bends. Gets that chicken pickin stuff and weird half note bends. That (!) along with the full knowledge of the chords, chromatic moves, and correct positions of the chords. This is really great. This is the second full lesson I’ve learned note for note! The trap many guitars players fall into (including myself) is picking a “scale” or “mode” and playing it over all the changes because theory tells us it works. I’ve listened to recording of my improvisations doing it the lazy way and it sounds like shit all the time… Jacks lessons get you out of that frame of mind. It’s hard at first because you have to think and be completely aware of where you are until it gets engrained. It gets easier for sure. Thanks Jacksnax!

    Crazy good, thanks for sharing Jack. Super helpful and I think I've learnt everything well enough to play by memory now, probably my favourite solo/ song I've learnt so far. Would you consider sharing the backing track as-well? Would really appreciate it, thanks again, this is top notch :)

    Your tone here is incredible. The notes really jump and sustain with great clarity and articulation. Could you say a bit more about the signal chain? You mentioned a phase and an envelop, also hearing some reverb, any compression? Really beautiful tone.

    • @jacksnax4guitar460
      @jacksnax4guitar460  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Yes I will happily share what I remember.
      The amp profile is my usual ‘64 deluxe reverb. Set no gain and a less bass roll off. The sound is pretty bright so little to no need for more sparkle.
      There’s some compression for snap and sustain. I’ve got it pretty squished. But it’s blended with the original signal.
      These some delay. It’s not too many repeats one or two. But they need to have the lows and highs rolled off. This creates a dull repeat that helps form a reflection without competition with the original signal. I roll off bass @100 and treble at 1.2k or so. Mids are flat (again…this is just the echo. That signal is blended in at about 15%, but it’s pretty low profile.
      Reverb is long decay…maybe 3seconds. It’s modulated as well so it defines a bit. There’s a bit of roll off on the bass and treb again. I pour it on until the delay kind of disappears.
      The envelope is your typical jerry sound, but I have about 20% of it and I also start the envelope much higher so there’s basically a little subtle “wah” at the top of some notes. It’s very minimal.
      Coupled with that is a bit of phaser. Again blended in. It helps create that little bit of squish at the beginning of the note.
      All this was my attempt to match the tone Garcia had on Go To Heaven. I failed… but found something else that was cool so I went with it.

      Neck & Bridge pickups. Not overwound humbuckers. Bridge tone on 6, Neck on 10. Mild breakup from amp with one dull delay (quiet) and reverb to taste. There’s a little phaser on there as well with a touch of envelope filter. Sorry… my apologies when I first answered your question I though I was talking about another lesson.

    Finding your page has been great learning the dead and this solo has been so fun. I was curious how you recorded your backing track. Sounds like you run through it 4 times but the first bar of b minor is missing an intro. Am I getting this right or is it consistent throughout? Trying to record on my looper and play along but my timing seems off at parts.- You’re the man regardless. Thank you.

    Jack, I just discovered your channel and it's amazing. Question: how do you get that "spank" on your attack when you play this solo? Is just the hot pups on your 335? You mentioned an envelope filter but I'm not hearing that effect.

    • @jacksnax4guitar460
      @jacksnax4guitar460  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TallGuitarBoy There’s some compression and the envelope follower and the phaser. But a lot of it is in the right hand….the pickups are not that important but the placement of them and which combination is used is. The 335 has pretty tame pickups. The center position on a 335 has that snappy sound…

    I just wanted to say that this guy is a genius, and I like his version or rendition even though this is not exactly the way he played?’ I actually like this guys version of Jerrys solo for Althea!’ But it sounds like he added his own twist to it or improvised it from the original one?’ My grandmother who died in 2013 her mother’s maiden name was Garcia!’ I’m still having trouble

      No! Not a NFN transcription of a specific GD track or gig.
      Just my take on it and a breakdown of the licks and ideas.
      However, many of my ideas are informed by JGs approach and some of the licks played here are pretty close to what I’ve heard on tapes and the album for the last 40 years.
