Great session. Wish I had been able to join live but the video afterwards was filled with good questions and answers. Now I understand why putting a 590 filter on a unconverted camera will not work. Also to provide a suggestion to the person who asked a question about white balance for an iPhone. I use an app called Camera +2 and it has a wide adjustment for WB when using a 720nm filter on your phone.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the live stream! We had a few technical kinks, my X-T2 overheated and froze 😒 and I mistakenly killed the audio while changing titles 🙄. Next time, I would love to queue up some images that you'd like me to troubleshoot or edit. Thanks!

Sorry I missed your livestream Rob, your discussion of the Lightroom B/W IR preset(yes it's worthless) inspired me to try the B/W Landscape preset on one of my shots taken with my IRChrome filter.
Thanks Rob, looking forward to your video on mobile IR. I have just started messing with a 680 nm filter on my Huawei P30 Pro, but you here, I ordered a 720 nm filter right away :-)
Thanks Rob for the Q&A. Very helpful. A couple misc. questions if you don't mind... 1) I have a full spectrum camera and am thinking of getting a UV/IR cut filter so I don't have to bring my visible light camera with me all the time. Does a FS camera + UV/IR cut filter give as good a result as the original camera would have or is there some compromise? 2) Thinking about the new Fuji XF 70-300 but am reluctant to buy until I know it performs well in IR. Have you heard anything or are there any specs which would indicate it may or may not have hot spots? Thank you!
1) In theory, yes. I have seen cases where an external hot mirror isn't exactly the same as the internal hot mirror, resulting in a slight color shift to the blue. This can be corrected with a white balance. I recommend getting a high-quality external hot mirror filter from a reputable brand to minimize/eliminate this. 2) I have not yet seen reports on hot spots for the Fuji 70-300mm. I'm curious as well to see if it performs better than the 55-200mm.
Please let me know when you have your Q&A on doing IR photography with your Smartphone. I have a Samsung Note 20 Ultra and would love to try doing IR landscape photography. Would love to know which Apps would be best to download to do editing as well as any Phone Filter Mounts to hold the IR filters. Thanks so much for all your TH-cam videos - I've watched several of them and am getting into IR landscape photography!
Great vlog Rob, with real valuable information. I have just uploaded IMG_8354.CR2 which is from my Canon 50D converted with a 665nm filter. I am not sure if this will change the camera profile you developed?
Hi Rob. Thanks for all of the videos. I've been doing IR photography for about 8 months now with a 665nm Canon 5D II from LifePixel. Living out in the Pacific Northwest, we have mostly evergreens, which can be significantly more difficult to edit than leafy trees. Since you offered to check out our photos, I sent you a favorite composition of mine that I've struggled a bit to get the false color looking right. Getting the channel swap and basic edits are no problem- it's the color/hue/saturation of the trees that I can't seem to find something that's really eye catching. Any recommendations are appreciated!
Infrared high-pass filters above 750nm transmit infrared light only, which is then processed as monochrome. The R72 is a 720 nm filter, which allows a small slice of red light to pass. Image shot with any IR filter can be processed as monochrome. Higher values will produce darker skies and water. 800nm filters will require 3-5 minute exposures on an unconverted camera, while a 720nm filter can shoot with 15-30 second exposures. That makes the 720nm filter ideal when shooting on an unconverted camera.
I just bought a new computer and tried to copy all my presets that I had made for many color directions with my different filters- I have a canon r full spectrum I had a mac air running psd 2022 now I have a new mac book pro with m2 chip and psd 2023 I copied them correctly but they look quite different ...any chance they will work ? also lost the blue sky profile which I liked
To export presets, right click on the preset and select Export. To move profiles, you can find them using this guide and the move them to the same location on the new computer. 590.red/where-profiles
I was finally able to download the DNG Profile Editor on my Mac computer. I made and was able to save 1 Profile, the -100. I shoot with a IR720 and 550IR. What profiles would I need for this? Also, I shoot with an iPhone 13 Pro Max, do I need a profile for each camera. I just took a photo shot with a 720 IR and using the -100 profile and channel swapping, the photo looks awful. I need some advise. Thank you so much.
Profiles are camera specific, so you need them for each camera. You can create your own or download many here: 590.red/infrared-profile-pack I create 2 profiles for each camera, one with a -50 temperature shift and one with a -100 temperature shift. That should cover most use cases for white balancing color infrared images.
The profiles are camera specific, but not filter specific. Creating a -50 and -100 temperature profiles should all you to get a good white balance with all color infrared filters.
@@sandykreit1752 Images shot with a 720 nm filter capture a small amount of red visible light and can produce images with some color. If you want to convert any infrared image to monochrome, you don't need a special profile for white balance, you can use any monochrome or B&W profile.
In one of your videos, could you process an image shot with a 720 IR filter in B&W and some color? I’d love to see how you process them. If it works for you. Thank you.

Brian, I edited your image in the latest live stream. Enjoy!
Interesting Q&A! I have the Hoya 72 filter! What is the 850? Lol I don't want colors, I only want black and white images! Which is better?👍👍👍

Can you use nd filters on a converted 720 camera for long exposures
Absolutely, I've been shooting with ND filters on a 590nm converted camera and am working on a video to cover this.

How do you set a custom white balance on your iPhone?
I will be covering this in my next video. The short answer, use the camera in Lightroom Mobile, which supports custom white balance.
Sorry I missed this.
