I never realized how powerful this song is. It's a broken man struggling - with everything. And then Kate Bush, with a voice like an angel's lullaby, consoles him. Reassures him. States her pride in him and her friendship lasting through the toughest of times. Wow. What a song. What beautiful voices they both have: Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush!

This was written at the height of great unemployment in Britain in the mid 1980s, men were feeling useless because they couldn't supply the needs of their families, suicides among unemployed middle aged men were on the rise. I personally believe this song captures those times perfectly... Gabriel and Bush, wow, what a combination.

Love this song, just so moving. Many decades ago, my husband was put out of work. We struggled on but in the end he had to ‘sign on’. He had never been out of work since delivering newspapers as a young teen. It broke my heart to see him crumbling. It is a horrible time for many people. Just keep going. One day at time. Give hugs and love to each other❤️❤️❤️❤️

“Because there was [a] reference point of American roots music in it when I first wrote it, it was suggested that Dolly Parton sing on it. But Dolly turned it down… and I’m glad she did because what Kate did on it is brilliant. It’s an odd song, a number of people have written to me and said they didn’t commit suicide because they had that song on repeat and obviously you don’t think about things like that when you’re writing them. But obviously a lot of the power of the song came from the way that Kate sings it.” - Peter Gabriel

12 years ago when everything went bad, I lost my job and was out of work for almost a year. I lost hope and nearly lost my mind, but my wonderful, understanding wife of 42 years said these same words to me and saved my life. A husband and wife stand back to back against the world. But we also do a lot of hugging. What an amazing video.

Peter and Kate are artists not just singers. They both look upon music as an art and perform as such . Both are amazing songwriters and lyricist. Peter was first known as original lead vocalist for Genesis. When he went to become a solo performer the drummer of the group Phil Collins to over as lead vocalist. The rest is history as they say. Peter is in the HOF as member of Genesis and solo performer. Kate Bush not as well known in America but has been huge performer in the UK. Known for her vocals and visual performances. At the height of her career she walked away got married and started a family. But I understand she is beginning to perform again. “ A Sensual World “ is another great work of art

Just so you know, this song was written about the trials and tribulations of the British working class. In particular the miners at the time of Margeret Thatcher. High unemployment and year long strikes with violence, it's from the perspective of either a laid off miner or unemployed man and his supportive wife.
Difficult times with two sides to the story, poor people with little or money being used as pawns by the rich and by a few dozen power hungry union leaders who thought they could bring down another government (they had brought down the 2 or 3 previous governments in the 70s) but came up against a brick wall in Maggie Thatcher.

    • @kimmarievan-ever6599
      @kimmarievan-ever6599 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Coal mining is in my family history so the strike meant something to my family and I..we supported it emotionally and financially but i didn't know this song was based on that time but when you listen to the lyrics it really does hit home..bloody Maggie Thatcher broke the unions and the whole coal mining industry..no matter what you think of Arthur Scargill he was bloody right about this..

I remember when it was released here in the UK and a lot of working class people out off work were angered by this because they felt patronised by two millionaires telling them not to give up. It was in all the papers. They were proud and said they didn’t ever feel unwanted. It was just a big social change in UK history with the closure of the mines. Nothing changes really. I like it though.

This song was written in the mid-80s at a time of de-industrialisation, recession and unemployment in the UK, especially in the north. I think you had the same sort of thing in the rust belt in the US, with closing down of industry and mass unemployment especially of men who'd traditionally worked in those industries and had no other skills. Of course the lyrics could equally apply to any other situation.

I felt and understood this song when it came out - I was 9 years old. Loved the song and the imagery the video displayed. But when I got married and started a family, this song bore a whole new meaning. The pressure to provide, to remain strong - it is almost too much sometimes. You can hear it in Peter's voice - the despondent, hopelessness of his situation - but then there is the 'rock' of Kate's message, that keeps him grounded.
I've heard many powerful songs in my 41 years of existence, but this continually ranks as one of the best! I still get misty eyed when I take a moment to 'listen & feel' this song.
Cheers to reacting to this beautiful piece!

Thanks KSO, yes this is a young married couple doing it so very, very hard in raw uncompromising, challenging situations. I imagine the wild wild west in past America would have been as heartbreaking and bleakly hard as this song outlines. Still it's a song everyone needs to hear. Thank you Peter!

Thankyou for your words, I’m all alone in the world, polite to neighbours, obaying al laws, paying my taxes …. and stil people/ neighbours barricade themselves, it hurts me, but I have no right to complain. I do not know what drives us apart, other than TV and internet, which I myself enjoy very much. I hope this comment will inspire others to be observant AND reach out. Happy trails ❤️

What you're hearing at the start is bass guitar played by world renowned session bass player, Tony Levin. He has been with Peter for decades now.

The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Gabriel saw Lange's images in a 1973 book titled In This Proud Land. He felt that a song based on this was wholly appropriate to difficult economic conditions in England under Margaret Thatcher. He composed lyrics about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement.
Gabriel originally wrote the song from a reference point of American roots music and he approached country singer Dolly Parton to sing it with him. However, Parton turned it down, so his friend Kate Bush took her place

I love the powerful imagery and the strong message it sends out represented by the fact that Kate never let go of him - the struggling man - she never loosed her grip on him once. What a lesson to those supporting loved ones now through covid or whatever it is - hold onto them tight and never loosen your grip and reassure them of your love and support for them constantly. Peace.

Kate Bush is my favorite artist of all time, but Peter Gabriel is up there too. I only found Kate Bush 10 years ago or so, but her music transformed me. Her music touches me in a way no one else has, she is truly a marvel. I adore watching her live performances, she put so much into it.

Written and released a year after the miners strike ended. The song was inspired by the photographs of Dorothea Lange, taken during the American great depression.

Thanks to you all three for the context. I vaguely remember the part about the miners’ strike but didn’t knowvabout the Lange book/photographs. Peter Gabriel is such a great artist; they are both national treasures of England and so good together. I also love Kate Bush’s work on Big Country’s The Seer. Very different but she just adds gold to whatever song her voice graces.

This song got me through years of depression. It’s sad and uplifting at the same time. Gabriel sang how I was feeling and Bush lifted me up.
