Big Entwistle fan and bassist here, you played the solo very well, but what stood out to me was the right hand technique: you got it down! The hand angled at about 40° from the neck, the fingerpicking/tapping/popping hybrid, the harmonics created by the fingers hitting the high frets, that's the Entwistle way!
this kid did more than just the justice to this song. His playing is flawless. He literally walked in the dark right behind John Entwistle, he stepped exactly where John stepped. He knew the foot steps a little too much, he knew John.
I think we should call this kid "Little Thunder Fingers" - he's that good! At least, on learning this song by ear. Get some shades, kid - your future looks bright!
Dude, i love the way you strum the strings. The sound you get strumming like that is awesome. Keep practising and you´ll be an excellent bass player, in the way of Flea, John Entwistle and (why not?) the great Jaco. Greetings from Argentina
There are no tabs really, I just listened to this song a bunch of times and played along. That way I could play along with the big lines a bit. The rest was mostly a little bit of improvisation.
Good job dude, sounds great!!!! Entwistle will always be the best:& greatest person/individual musician that could EVER have possibly happened to/& within the ENTIRE Genre/& History of Rock n Roll music. He's also one of my biggest influences as a "Bass Guitarist"!!!! Over the years sooooo many incredible, & talented bass players/& bass guitarists alike have inspired, & influenced me to the extent that John Entwistle's influence on my current personal playing skill/& playing style isn't nearly as obvious/or as prevalent as it was for me during the first 5-6 years playing Bass. Starting from when I got my first bass, and began learning all that I know today, & took a turn to make my life/& career be the one of a musician (Bass Guitarist/& Singer). if you saw/or heard how I play right now you probably wouldn't think Entwistle is one of my big influences, & inspirations, but he most certainly is, & always will be one of my top 5 biggest personal influences as a bass player. Along with Roger Waters, Geezer Butler, Bob Daisly, Krist Novoselic. P.S. You should post a bass cover of Pink Floyd's song Pigs (3 Different Ones), off of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals, & try to pull it off 100% PERFECTLY/& FLAWLESS. Pretty unique licks/fills/& runs all around the entire neck, as well as just a great, funky, & interesting bass line the whole song through. Take care bro, keep up the good work, & never stop being a "Bass Guitarist"!!!!!!!!!
fantastic job! that is a very difficult song to play and a tribute to the great John Entwhistle for all of his fantastic years of play. Your hard work is appreciated!
Incredible seeing the lads fingers dancing over the fret board just like a baby Ox...... Keep loving the who fella and spread the joy and thunder......🤪
For sure. Can't name a lot of bassists nowadays who actively match his style. It's a very specific type of playing that only works in certain musical styles.
Needed to learn this for a jam thing. Your video was the most instructive of the many on YT! Between the wonderful people posting "bass along" videos and the "Amazing Slow-Downer" program you can learn anything! Boy you kids don't know what it was like in the olden days - playing the record over and over and over to pick up a bass line 😁 Doing the "authentic fingerboard tapping" ala Entwistle is great.
With massive respect from a fellow Bassist to another...Tomas...as we say here in the states, that was sick sick sick!! :). You rocked it my friend, I loved it. Inspiring to me to give that song a try. Thank you...
Really good job mate. There's a lot of downward slides after each of the licks when the song is at the C# section. You might be missing these because they're at the same time as the snare hit. I slide down from the A string's 16th fret (C#) as the snare hits, and when the song goes to C the slide is from the A string's 15th fret (same note but one octave higher). Not taking anything away from you, it sounds good. I play it differently every time.
Nicely done. I used to be a bit of a hack drummer back in the day but my next choice would be bass guitar. IMO, Entwistle was in the top 3 greatest bass players all time. Only behind Geddy Lee and Chris Squire.
geddy ahead of john huh. I agree they're both all-time greats. It's so tough for me to choose one or the other. is there a particular reason you'd put geddy ahead of john? Just interested because it's such a close comparison to me.
@@thedoctorroth No offense intended towards JE- Rip. I suppose my bias would be because I’ve been a Rush “nut” since the late 70’s when I discovered them, and have seen them live 6 times. And I mentioned Squire because I’ve done my share of Yes exploration, although never seen them live. I recommend the full show when they played Lugano Jazz Fest Switzerland in 2004, full concert is here on YT. Also, Lee and Squire have a bit of a “connection” in my mind. When Yes was inducted into the R&R HOF, Squire had passed and Lee was chosen to Induct them and also play with Yes for the short live set at the induction. I’m just more familiar with those bassists. As I said, no disparaging Entwistle. You said it perfectly- they’re both (or all) to be recognized as “The Greats.” (And moving to Jazz/R&B, Stanley Clarke is no slouch either- School Days)
@@thedoctorroth After our discussion the other nite and some long overdue research, I’ve “rethunk” my rankings. I still maintain that Lee, Squire and Entwistle are top 3, but I have moved JE to the top. I’ve just taken him for granted, that he was always “back there” and providing solid bass all the time. I now see he was WAY more than that. Thank you sir for bringing it to my attention.
Some tend to think the Squire line of Fender goodies are somehow less in quality than the rest of the more expensive stuff. In the 80s I had a Squire Strat that was actually the best quality guitar I ever had. Was a beautiful guitar and as easy to play as can be. Good stuff.
+Steven Painter Yeah, for sure. Bought it about 2 or 3 years ago and still one of the best buys ever. I think it's mostly because of the Duncan pickups.
Awesome playing!! just like the Ox........I would like to suggest what I think is quite an interesting bass filled song......."A view to a kill" by Duran Duran
Yeah, it's always nice to give a song a personal twist. This song is definitely great for doing that. It's also nice to really try to find out how Entwistle got the sound he had. Whatever floats your boat
i can't imagine all the effort and time you had to put into doing such an excellent cover! It'd be gret to see you play the One World bass line by Dire Straits. It's a really fun and amazing piece to play. Let me know if you already heard it, and what you think about it!
+Siham Bsn Hey, just checked it out. Seems pretty nice. It took some practice to play this piece, but it was alright. I'm not currently planning to post another cover, but I will at some point. Thanks for the comment!
I plan to learn both eminence front and one world. my 2016 challenge! your video's gonna help im sure did you down tune your bass for this one ? cheers
right, and youre lucky to have it. i have a big cort bass thats really hard to play on, belonged to a male jazz player, so as a female rock enthusiast, i can say the struggle's real haha yo im just curious, do you have any tips to get that "typing" method right ? Enty explains it in his master class, but I dont get it.. any help would be welcome!
It doesn't take a lot of practice. I just picked it up by watching videos of John Entwistle playing live. It's really similar to slapping, except you do it on the neck and with your index- and middle finger.
I'm a great John Entwhistle fan and a Who fan. I think you've done well in getting his sound and it's close to what got. It seems you're using a 5 string Bass? Perhaps you could go over how to get his sound, your example shows you need to master your technique before you go buying expensive guitars. Many guitarist are abscessed about buying their heroes guitar before they can even play. I think give a good guitarist one guitar and a good amp and a few effects and he or she will be able to get most guitar and bass sounds without having to spend an arm and a leg on equipment. Thumbs up, keep up the good work :) Here is some poor playing by me, I'm a huge Paul Weller fan You do Something to me - Mark McGlashan
Never knew how funky this bass line was, great job my dude. Thanks for highlighting this masterful bass artistry courtesy of Mr. Entwhistle.
Yeah, but to be fair you sort of do that ajtomatically when you try to copy his sound. It's a very enjoyable playing style.
this kid did more than just the justice to this song. His playing is flawless. He literally walked in the dark right behind John Entwistle, he stepped exactly where John stepped. He knew the foot steps a little too much, he knew John.
Not literally.
He's got the same bored expression as Entwistle haha.
In deed, this gentleman has skills. He looks like he's gotta take a dump.
Oh that's his game face. Every musician has one.
@Signore so true my friend. Catatonic...near madness or taking a dump in his diaper!!!
@@gregsutton6701 sounds like you're fixated on people taking dumps

very good job coming from a fellow bass player this song is not a easy one, you nailed it though, like your playing style too so natural ,
John is to me the best bass player ever and you did a great job especially for your age.
Geddy Lee , les clay pool

bloody great playing
Very impressive. Entwistle set a standard that few can emulate, but you have done his work justice. Keep Rockin!
Very nice. Learn the live version from (can't hear bass as much as I'd like too) from the Toronto concert in 1982. That was nuts!
You rocked the solo. It's not a mistake its your interpretation. Two thumbs up!!
I think it was Jimmy Page who said about playing live "If you make a mistake do it again and everyone will think you planned it that way."
So true
Excellent job. There were very few who could match john entwistle who i think is the greatest bassist ever.
Again you did a really good job.
For sure. Can't name a lot of bassists nowadays who actively match his style. It's a very specific type of playing that only works in certain musical styles.

EXCELLENT!!! you nailed it!! I didn'T noticed the errors yet so :)
Only been playing a couple months and wish I had skill like this guy!
Great Song !!! Brings back memories !
Great playing. I didn't fast forward to the solo. Wanted to hear the build up to the solo. The action sounds nice and low on the neck too!
Nicely done!
great performance man.
Not too bad, son! Your a Contender!🎸 STRIVE TO BECOME AS LEGENDARY!!
bad ass playin bro!
Good playing, bro. This is a tough one but you nailed it.
Your right hand action reminds me a lot of Johns style of playing .... well done young man !!
James Beabout hey thanks, appreciate it. I did try to.copy.his 'typewriter' style of playing. It produces a very unique sound.

Interesting technique, nicely done.
