The temple is located on a small hillock close to Nilgiri Hills in Odisha. It is said that Sita, wife of Lord Rama established the sivalingas in Panchalingeswar, when they were exiled from their palace. One has to climb about 260 concrete steps to reach the temple. On both sides of the cemented approach road leading up to the temple gate are set up many stalls. They sell stationery items as well as various articles for offering to the worship of God. The natural scene all around the long meandering flight of stairs is pretty cool and serene. A narrow stream is gushing down through the rocks. It is said to flow over the sivalingas. The sivialingas are placed under this perennial flow. There is Radhagobinda temple along with other small temples where the stairs end. The devotees have to lie prostrate with heads placed against the flow of the stream. There are concrete seats in between flights of stairs, a good resting place to enjoy the pleasant surroundings.
How to reach:
A three and half-hours’ train journey from Kolkata to Balasore and then from Balasore 30 km. drive to Panchalingeswar by car. Or,
From Kolkata to Baripada by train then by car it is 75 km’s drive to Panchalingeswar.
