    Tempestade no Atlântico

There is a huge difference between being frightened and being in danger. Sometimes they are seen as the same. If you have a good tight vessel and a good crew, you should be able to take on just about anything the sea has to throw at you. Things change when the crew starts jumping off the vessel. From above the vessel does not seem to be in that much trouble. As others have said, she seems to be riding pretty well. Panic is contagious and my guess is that is what happened here. It would not be the first time a panicked crew member took over the boat. This was a shame.

It seems to me that the crew are abandoning a perfectly working, floating boat. The jib is furled, the mainsail is lashed to the boom and warps are being trailed to slow her down under bare poles. It amazes me how many people go to sea with the thought that they will always be rescued! My principle is that you should step up into a liferaft, not down. To call the rescue services out for this seems farcical and not justified.
Fabulous rescue services available in this tricky bit of ocean, but to be rescued from a well working, good boat, then leave her floating as a hazard to shipping is almost criminal.
The boat was found 6 months later on the west side of Atlantic, perfecly floating and safe, what proofs that she had no problems.

You never abandon a boat that is not sinking. The parachute anchor was working well and the boat looked capable in those conditions. The only doubt was the ability of the crew due to their ages? Such a shame. Great recovery work though.

FIrst; Excellent job to the air crew!
Second; This is ridiculous... but OK... was his boat... he could dispose of it as he wishes, especially if this video doesn't end in the hands of his insurance.
P.S. I have looked at the video frames a few times and magnified a few of them... rig is fine (maybe a babystay has gone but it looks pretty much an halyard just forgotten loose), the rudder is still there and working fine (you can see it in some frame), the boat doesn't seems full of water but floating well... so it looks pretty much a case of exhaustion and panic, poorly balanced with sailing skills.
And by the way... it is a sailboat in it's element.... whoever feel the need of an engine to control end steer it, maybe should stick to RIBs and powerboats, for the happiness of everyone, air rescue included

It's always interesting to read the comments and try to gage the real sea experience that people that post here have. Having grown up in those waters I've seen a lot of incidents and have been caught in some interesting weather conditions. Baring a magic Crystal ball It's either the weather changing or a small mistake that will see you there. This crew did the right thing. Yes, I would not personally leave the vessel. But then again if I have hurt or non functional crew members for whatever reason, their life is paramount. Vessel has insurance. People just die.
Ultimately it was the Skipper decision to make. The problem that most should not even be on the water is a different one. From my grandfather I learned that at the harbour all of you are Admirals, on the storm only very few of you are Captains. The Atlantic is very democratic. It cares nothing for grand statements.
Be sure to use your sails wisely in a storm and trust the boat. Aim at the waves and batten down the hatches. We don't surf waves in Portuguese waters. Never ends well. The only course you should have is either out of the way of the storm or aiming at it.
    Fair winds to all.
Bom trabalho e os meus cumprimentos á Força Aérea Portuguesa.

Good rescue video. Note the following
    1. The green dye marker is highly visible from the air at :17 seconds.
    2. In comparison the white boat is very hard to see in the beginning of the video (0:22 - 0:44) (while the aircraft is searching) because the boat is white and there are many larger white streaks of foam on the seas and whitecaps everywhere.

Whether you agree with the call to Abandon Ship or not you have to remember if the vessel is fully insured the crew / owner has nothing to lose. So it is easier to make that call right or wrong. When you are scared either for yourself or usually for someone else you make different decisions . I agree the boat looks ok and if you look back at say the 70’s Fastnet race more lost their lives by abandoning a floating vessel. If you believe it to be the right decision then however unwise when looking back it was the right decision for you. Just my half pennies worth.!

Everybody's a hero sitting at home watching a video. I don't know if they 'had' to leave this boat or not but those appear to be really large waves...some capable of rolling or even pitchpoling the boat, in which case the rig would be lost and structural integrity would be up for grabs. If a skipper made a choice to prioritize protecting lives, I'm cool with that. The insurance company probably is too. As stated below....good practice for the chopper crew. Would be nice to hear the whole story.

Looking at this boat, I understood the crew are not new in this business: they have a drogue, sails are safe, so something is really wrong. I tried to understand, to avoid bad things myself. Looks to me they lost shrouds after kick-down. Am I correct? Look at 1:30 and 4:06. So, probably it was a good decision.

      @srbrad321 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good eye Malchugan. I don't see shrouds or a back stay in those clips either. As quick fix, the main halyard could've been used as a back stay and if they had a spin halyard, it could've been used for one of the shrouds. Would just need to baby it through the storm. Once calmer, a third line could've been rigged for the other shroud. But I have to say, those were some monster waves and with no jib to reef (no backstay), it was a ruff call. I personally would've rode it out, but since I wasn't there, easier said I'm sure.

      @arvischilf2950 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, all the stays and shrouds are in place and looks quite steady in rough seas. Try 2:08 and further, also other places. Looks to me that its not hardware, but software. But you never know

    The rescue operation is great.
!! But if they leave the boat from the weather, they are embarrassed when they land.
As a sailor, I was very upset about this abandon.
Could someone really tell me why the craft was abandoned?

the boat went mast down the night before, and they lost emergency raft,so decided safer to call rescue, and boat was insured.

Unless the hull was compromised or there was a medical emergency how could this crew risk the lives of the brave men and women who answer their call for rescue? Regardless of how many times they may have rolled, or if they lost coms and even their mast. Ride out the storm. Jury rig a mast. I too don't understand the abandonment.

I agree with most people in here. the boat which is a Sparkman & Stephen Swan 38 by the way not a 44, looks sound and sailing well under bare poles. I don't have the facts they may have been exhausted or scared or perhaps in the forecast there was much worse to come iminently ???? I would not criticize them until knowing the facts. I sail single handed an almost identical boat myself, just a foot longer, also a Sparkman & Stephen, a Gecco 39 and they can take a lot of punishment. however, there may have been other reasons to abandon ship.

Aviso.

I see so many comments of hard chair sailors, like "the boat is fine", "thei should never leave the dock", etc....
How do you know that this boat was fine? If they were taking in water, you're not gonna see it from the air. And what if they lost their rudder? You're not gonna see it from above a lot of times... don't judge that lightly. Going to a liferaft is a hazard as well, you only abandon ship before rescue if the ship itself is sinking faster then the rescue arrives.
