Red pandas are the original pandas. The giant pandas (which are bears) got their name due to being similar in markings, diet and general behaviour. There are two species of panda, the red and golden. They are the last surviving species of a great line that emerged 30 million years ago, and covered most of Europe and Asia, and once did have a bear-sized species many millions of years ago, known as the great panda. When the red pandas were discovered (more accurately, finally sighted), they were regarded as the "ghosts of the forests". The name "panda" actually came from the Bengali language. The red panda is definitely unrelated to the giant panda, which the latter was discovered about 70 years after the former. Another name for the red panda is "wah", from Chinese, possibly from Tibetan origin.
Procyonoidea is a superfamily of carnivorans that is currently native only to North America, South America, and Eastern Asia, it contains twenty-eight extant species within four families, the four extant families within the Procyonoidea superfamily are Mephitidae (Skunks and Stink Badgers), Procyonidae (Raccoons and Bassarisks), Ailuridae (Red Panda), and Nasuidae (Coatis, Olingos, Olinguito, and Kinkajou).
