Ben, you are now one of my new heroes! I'm tackling the IMS repair at age 65 with plenty of wrenching experience and I am amazed at your unabashed approach to putting out these videos as you attempt the job for the very first time. Well done sir! And thank you so much for giving the rest of us a look at the pitfalls we face as we proceed with this repair. Honestly, I think Pelican Parts should link this video series for their 986 customers. Thank you very much!!
LOL! That was too funny! The real sad part is that I could see that happening to me, except with the flywheel falling on my head. Good job, buddy. You're nearly halfway there!
Awesome! This is the biggest project I've every tried. I'm just a Porsche enthusiast who likes working on cars. I've always done my own maintenance on my cars, but beyond that... no mechanical experience. And yes, it's going pretty well *knock on wood*
Love it dude. You seem so inept yet you're are doing such a fabulous job. You give hope to the common DIYer. Keep up the excellent work! Note to self: leave a couple bolts partially threaded when breaking the flywheel free.
Man,please get you some air tools you’re doing a good job and it would be much easier for you , yeoooooooow almost had to go to the er because of the flywheel that scared the hell out of me! Next time leave one loose bolt in the crank where the flywheel connects, that way you can break it loose and you won’t get hurt, as far as air tools go to a pawn shop pick up some work your magic with the manager, please be safe you seem to know or you do your homework good job on your videos like to see many more, I just bought 1999, 996 cab. Carrara, love the car but scared to death to drive it until I replace IMS. Peace!
Richard Owens impact tools are great but you don’t want to use them on the clutch assembly because of the toxic dust. Maybe after spraying it down with water it’s okay, but I still wouldn’t do it.
Glad you didn't end up with 50 stitches on your forehead or worse!! That flywheel is like 30 pounds of jagged, sharp edges! Great watching your progress. I can totally see myself trying this some time in the future. It would be great to hear your total labor time and costs at the end of your project. be safe and looking forward to seeing you complete the project!
Thanks! That flywheel is brutal, to be sure! I think that's a great suggestion. I'll try to give a breakdown of the cost / time when everything is back together.
I’m guessing those bolts are torque to yield if it’s recommended that you replace them. The reason is that when you torque the bolts they physically stretch and deform when you hit the prescribed torque spec. I’ve reused TTY bolts on non critical parts, but I’d never do that here as every time you reuse them there’s a chance that the bolt will break as you torque it down.
I like to keep all the smaller bolts, clips etc. in zip lock bags. I then use a sharpie to label each bag of small parts (e.g. exhaust or transmission mount, etc.)
I have... It's a bit complicated, so I'll try to put together a video soon, but I'm using a hybrid ceramic bearing in place of the original steel bearing.
pleas check the double mass flywheel How : mark outer and inner shell pull the outer shel clockwise and check if they come back in position max difference about 1cm and3 mm if not the inner springs are bad and replacement is best
Did this job 5 years ago now doing again... Watched your video the first time now watching again.Thank you for posting the procedure!

Haha! yep! Glad I'm not the only one! I definitely felt like a dumbass. At least the Flywheel needed replacing anyway...
You have me hooked to this series of vlogs. I don't know what your mechanical experience is but you seem to be doing very well.

Yep. I'm a pretty regular dude who likes working on his car. Definitely not a professional (obviously), but honestly, it's going pretty well.
Great job you certainly have some balls tackling a job like that on your own well done respect

Glad you left the flywheel drop in. It saved me from doing the same thing.
always happy to help others learn from my mistakes!
Thank you for the great editing! Shows just what you need to see. (Way too many TH-cam videos: "How to remove a spark plug" - 1:48:54)
Thanks! I know the type of videos you mean. It's a bit of work to edit, but I decided it was definitely worth it.

great videos!!! cant wait for the 5th stage !
Hello sir, what jack stand would you recommend to hold the boxster at 23" clearance? Thank you.
I am really enjoying your step by step instructions. Thank you for your help. Also how do you go about organizing the parts you remove for reassembly?

Great Videos! I have to tackle this job in a few weeks on a 996. Have you figured out which
replacement IMS bearing you are going to use?

I'm glad you are ok. Now that it's out the way, FUNNY.
Haha! Yep. Had a good laugh at my own stupidity, too!
lol I laughed my balls off when that Flywheel fell off. Very funny hope you didn't damage the garage floor lol. 👍😂
Haha! Right? That thing is heavy, too!

great job, thanks,
