I'm from the tri-state Ct Ny NJ area and I thought we were bad ass racers running our 9 second '70 Olds 442 at Englishtown, Lebanon and Atco, as if that was the pinnacle of drag racing in the 80's and 90's. However on a july trip to Charlotte to retrieve a body-in-white Olds Cutlass for our next drag car, we learned that the short track outlaw quick 8 and quick 16 guys were the Bad Asses. Shuffletown we spotted as we were coming into town as it runs right next to a main road. Our jaws dropped as we passed it by. Never seen anything like it. Our first experience attending an event at a local track was night time at Shadyside. Quick 8 shootout among regular racing. As we were pulling into the facility we seen some dude going thru the traps on a sportster with no helmet or eye protection. That's when we knew we were not going to be seeing NHRA style drag racing! This was true "Run whatcha brung and hope ya brung enough" pure drag racing. The quick 8 cars were phenomenal to watch...real racing. Walking through the pits we started chatting with a quick 8 guy at his open trailer. Forget the type of car he ran but it was tube chassis and fast. Asked him if he hurts many parts during the week of busy racing and he pointed to the enclosed box at the front of his trailer and said in a heavy southern drawl "Gots me a spare Sonny Leonard 615 and lenco rah cheer just in case". We sheepishly went back to watching the races knowing we could never ever come down south and expect to compete with Southern boys...

Every time the gates opened @ Shuffletown for a Quick 16 was AWESOME, and NO ONE was a better announcer than Larry Wright!

This is too cool to find this on TH-cam. I actually ran my souped-up '67 Camaro here a few times. 8.80 was the best I could do with N50-15 street tires .. I couldn't afford slicks. I remember watching the likes of Charles Carpenter, Noah Anderson, Walter Henry, Johnny McGuirt, and quite a few other notables .. I spent many Sundays at this track .. it's a shame it went the way it did because of progress.

Shuffletown was the birthplace of pro mod. Ed Hoover won the first official pro mod race here at Shuffletown with the legends Walter Henry and Charles Carpenter. It was a sight to behold 👍

@DragRacingMediaOfThePast I could step out my back door , walk across our field and cross 1 neighborhood street and be at the finish line of Speed World in Orlando FL. Those were the days. 80's and I learned a lot. Got to meet Big Daddy there a few times. Go to his museum in Ocala. If you have , great for you.

Damn sure is !! And costs half as much, both tickets and concessions !! Me and a group of truckdriver buddies of mine had never missed a race (except 2 rainouts) at Zmax since the place opened, until they recently lost their mind on ticket prices !! We had bought the very same seats in the John Force grandstand since day one at $45 a seat, when they increased the price to $55, we cussed a little but paid it, but 2 years ago, after COVID, they increased the price to a staggering $205 a seat, since there was 8 of us truckdrivers in the group, and as much as we love top fuel drag racing, we said a resounding "f**k you" on those ticket prices and $10 hamburgers, and haven't set foot on the facility since then !! Last time I watched an event there on TV, there was 50% attendance live at best on what the stands can hold !! I never got to see a race at Shuffletown and I hate that, knowing the history of it that I have learned, but it had shut down and was fixin' to be a subdivision of 6 ft apart houses or condos before we chased my wife's job to the Charlotte area. I'm sure I woulda had a big time !! Hearing names like Ed Hoover and Charles Carpenter, two "granddads of the beginnings of the pro mod class" from folks that were there was history in itself. The "good ol' days" are gone, the "wine and cheese until bankruptcy" days are all that's left !! All these tracks, NASCAR, NHRA, IHRA, World of Outaws, etc better wake their ass up quickly and realize they've "priced out the fan base" that made them. But I don't believe they will until the auctioneer's gavel hits the desk declaring "SOLD". That's stupidity on a level I can't comprehend!!

Shuffletown dragway was in NW Charlotte. Unfortunately, progress and greed took over. Developers built subdivisions around the track, the new residents complained about the noise, and the track was shut down. It probably goes a little deeper than that, but that's what happened, in a nutshell. I spent many Sundays at this track.
