Wow I've never left a float plan before. I promise you my friend I will from here on out. You need to be on a float plan commercial. It means more coming from a real Captain. Awesome Video!
Hey Mike, I take a spark plug cable and pull the wire out of the center. Cut it into bead sized parts and use it in place of beads on heavy egg sinker rigs. You could still add the beads if you want the noise but just put the rubber next to your swivel. It really reduces the impact of the weight (and beads) slamming into the swivel.
Man i have learned so much from you. I have been out with multiple guides for hours and you have taught me so much more than they ever even tried to. Thank you!
I would also add to the safety portion of the video to not go beyond the capabilities of your boat. For instance I own a 12'×36" Jon boat. Before going anywhere, I check the wind speeds for the location where I plan to fish. If the wind speed is over 10 mph, I won't go out in big water. If somebody owns a pontoon boat, they probably shouldn't go out in the ocean (especially in high winds). Anyway keep up the good work, Mike.
Awsome tip on where to look the live bait to control the air and it's action, heading to Oklahoma next week to my favorite spot and will use the new rigging technique!! Very shallow river there and keeping bait active close to bottom will be a great advantage!! Let you know the outcome
Perfect on the managing a spread cant get people to understand that they always want 8 rods out 4 on each side and 1 out the back.Thinking there getting more done u can get twice as much done with half the rods because u can keep those all controlled exactly like u want them and cut into little cuts etc.Great video bro as always!!!
So, I'm new to striper fishing. My question is, right now the bait balls in my lake are made up of one inch long bait/shad, should I use bait that is that small to fish with? I watch stripers look at the bass minnows I use, 3-4 inches long, and they look at it and swim away. I'm watching this on live scope. Lot of them swim right up to it and turn around and leave. The small one inch tail spinner lure I use has done a lot better than my live bait. I fish lake ouachita in Arkansas, clear, deep, and 55 degrees right now. They seem to only want the same very small size of bait that they are chasing. I've just never heard of anyone fishing for stripers with crappie minnows. LOL

Thank a lot pal. I will let you know how me make out.. We love you videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge pal. Most fishermen are tight lipped down here.
We fish from the bank for these in Oregon. was wondering should I be using 2 hooks for our anchovies and herring? and if so, is it better to rig with the head at bottom hook?
A lot depends on the size bait versus the size fish you are seeing. Water clarity plays a part too. If it’s clear water go with a single hook in the tail to keep the bait swimming away from the bank. If you use 2 hook rig, yes put bottom hook in head.
Mike - you show 3 ways of rigging bunker on this video - great info. For new fisherman that catch a lot more live mackerel sabiki fishing than "snagging" or cast-netting bunker - how do you compare the 2? Can you catch the same big Stripers on mackerel just like bunker? Or is bunker that much preferred by the Striper? Also, I always have hooked the mackerel on the neck, just behind the head. Is that the best method for live mackerel, or do you use the same 3 varying hook configurations to keep your baits spread about the water, just like bunker tips you gave?
Good questions. We fish with Joe Marciano of the Hard Merchandise quite a bit up in Boston and Gloucester. We used Macks up there and caught lots of good fish, but when he sees Bunker around he wants them over Macks. The Macks aren’t as hearty as the Bunker so we just hooked them in the nose, the shoulders is also fine the way your doing it. Hooking them in the tail will probably kill them quicker. Check out a few of these. Mike, great video. You seem a fan of casting rod set-ups and am interested why that is. What’s your comparison to spinning setups specifically for Striper fishing? I’ve used Shimano Bait Runner reels on spinning setups for live bait fishing forever and wanted to know if you had any luck?
I used to guide for lake trout with your same exact rig. It’s the best when you need to let a fish run and take the bait down. For larger fish a casting setup gives you much more power and comfort but You can easily do what we do with your spinning gear, make sure you use mono for live and cut bait.
Mike Smedley - thanks! Toughest problem is knowing how long to let them run before reeling for hook set. So I usually allow them 30 seconds or more on a tear ... then when I think they’ve slowed down and have turned the bait down the gullet - I start reeling. But I do miss some fish, but I suppose mostly smaller fish that take longer to get her down. So the Bait Runner set on light pull (to me) is better than free spoiling a standard reel. But are there tips on how not to have to wait so long with the Striper crashing a bait and then going on a long tear! Thx ! Great info!
I personally lock up the drag and firmly pull up on the rod to help the circle hook when the baits are hooked in the mouth. Stripers vacuum feed the entire bait so you shouldn’t need to let them run if you are using mono and a soft tip rod. This let’s them complete the vacuum process without feeling the rod. You should not miss any fish large enough to fit the bait entirely in its mouth. Braid and a stiff tip will kill you every time. They will drop it. You May miss smaller fish.
Mike Smedley thank you!! ... that is some seriously good advice that I have a feeling will pay off big. I am a believer! Little tips like this usually make all the difference for former lake fisherman like me trying to learn the ocean craft. Again - much appreciated!
Thanks brother!! These straight shank hooks are incredible with a regular knot and no snell. I’ve tried and experimented with every combination of hook, knot and snell over the years and this setup has the best hookup ratio I’ve seen.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS No doubt, palomars are great with most line types and weights. They also help brittle lines by splitting the load at the most critical part of the knot. But I prefer my modified snell for live bait trolling and I feel I lose nothing with it. When tied right, I've found my hook up rate has improved dramatically by turning the hook point into the mouth at the most critical time. I also wanted something I could tie fast and easy. I'll try to get a video over to you on it. A knot class would be a very beneficial video for you some time!
I do believe a snell improves hookups with bent eye hooks, but once I switched to straight eye circle hooks (especially with Owner MUTU hooks) and a Palomar my hookups have improved beyond belief in every application. If you have anything less than 90% strike to hookup, give them a try.

Excellent video! I’m just starting to get into this fishery. How much line do you let out with the sinkers? Seems as though they are not really needed as well.
I will set some way out and some close. I stagger the lengths on every other rod to reduce the chances for tangles with each other. You are correct, the weights aren’t 100% needed. Try some with weight and some without until you find what is working best. 👍👍👍👍.

Oh yeah. They sell out within days of receiving new stock unfortunately. They just can’t make them fast enough. That’s why I haven’t posted any new videos on them. Hopefully they will catch up, but everyone is buying fishing gear right now making it even tougher.
A snell isn’t really best for a straight eyed hook, but I rarely snell a bent eye to be honest. After so many years I just have confidence in a knot. I don’t like the way the front edge of the bent eye looks with a snell. It looks like it can stop the hook from sliding when you study it.
Three things happen when you hook the fish in the tail. 1. Lead Weight pulls down the tail. Head points up. 2. The fish is being pulled backwards so the gills get pulled open which brings it to the surface. 3. The fish swims in circles which brings it to the surface.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS is this also in the Raritan Bay? I was thinking about going out Saturday for the first time in 15 years. Can you give me some advice to a novice fisherman.
It’s for the video-sake mostly. So the viewer can hear the fish take drag. I actually did a poll to see what people prefer, and it was a landslide win for clicker on.
I dont know where you find these empty bodies of water, but every time i start working a school of bait, a googan has to fly by going 40 mph, especially when im trolling live baits. Im starting to dislike the salem sound.
Yep. Fun fact. 😁We were all using this well before it was named the Carolina rig. Fishermen have been using it for at least 30 years before it was named in 1980. How does something like that happen I wonder??
I love how these TH-cam fishing guys leave the clickers on the whole time they fight and reel in a fish, ensuring to wear their gears as much as possible.

Medium heavy casting rods been sold out for like 6 months now. 🤷♂️
Partially my fault. I recommend MH a lot and with this mess going on they can’t get them quick enough.
Is the company selling the rod still in business ??? Their website says all rods out of stock.
Oh yeah. They sell out within days of receiving new stock unfortunately. They just can’t make them fast enough. That’s why I haven’t posted any new videos on them. Hopefully they will catch up, but everyone is buying fishing gear right now making it even tougher.
Why not a snell?
A snell isn’t really best for a straight eyed hook, but I rarely snell a bent eye to be honest. After so many years I just have confidence in a knot. I don’t like the way the front edge of the bent eye looks with a snell. It looks like it can stop the hook from sliding when you study it.
rear hooking lets fish stay lower in water column . not sure why he thinks they would come to top.
Great ending....with the advice as most ppl do shit and not care who is left behind to worry
Thanks brother!! You’re right.
Your REEL link, doesn't take you to a reel...
Fixed it. Thanks.
🙂👍🏻👍🏻
😁👍👍
Why do you guys insist on reeling with the clicker on? That absolutely causes the clicker to need replacement on Accurate reels
It’s definitely part of the game, it can be very frustrating for sure.
We Fishing
Does mom know your not wearing a life vest?
🤣🤣
Your rig is a Carolina rig !
Yep. Fun fact. 😁We were all using this well before it was named the Carolina rig. Fishermen have been using it for at least 30 years before it was named in 1980. How does something like that happen I wonder??
U got dirt on ur chin !! Bubba !!! Lol !!
such an a$$hole to use a live fish for that.
I love how these TH-cam fishing guys leave the clickers on the whole time they fight and reel in a fish, ensuring to wear their gears as much as possible.
I appreciate your concern for my “gears”. And I thought nobody cared. ❤️
