My first album I ever bought. Took my birthday money (bday 3 days after it was released in Aug 1988) and went to the local ICA (grocery shop chain) to buy it. I remember how proud I was to have it in my hands, and how dad hated it (he only listened to classical music on the record player).

After the 3x platinum success in the US of Europe's 'The Final countdown' in 1986 and the massive world tour... the pressure was on Europe to deliver a follow-up record... But there were missteps made by the band that were avoidable when their 1988 album 'Out of this world' was released... Original Europe guitarist John Norum had quit the band after 'Final countdown' complaining that the record was too commercial. They replaced him w/ a stellar new guitarist Kee Marcello, but the band's sound was likely to change. Europe enlisted producer Ron Nevison, who had scored major hit arena rock albums by Journey... Heart ... Survivor... But the music went in a different direction from the glossy sound on 'The Final countdown'... and 'Out of this world' was missing that expected anthemic track that had made the last album a classic... the album went platinum in the US w/ the singles - 'Superstitious' ... the ballad 'Open your heart' (which was re-recorded from their 2nd album 'Wings of tomorrow') ... and had stellar songs like - 'Sign of the times'... 'Let the good times rock'... 'Ready or not'... But sales of the record were less than 'The Final countdown'. Europe spent the summer of 1988 touring w/ Def Leppard but decided to focus on new markets outside N. America ... They played Asia and returned to tour Europe in 1989, but they discovered that the album was not as popular and ticket sales were disappointing... By the time they turned their attention to N. America again in 1989, Europe's singles had failed to generate sales and the interest in the band had dropped in popularity significantly in favor of heavier rock bands like Skid Row, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, etc... So, a new tour of N. America was scrapped. Europe tried again w/ the next album 'Prisoners in Paradise' in 1991, but sales were worse in the wake of 90's grunge rock taking over from 80's bands... Europe decided to split up in 1992 after the tour proved fruitless. Europe reunited in 2004 w/ John Norum returning on guitar... but a different rock sound.

The club scenes all across the US were lit up with soaring guitars and matching soaring vocals, pounding drums and slammin bass, with millions and millions of us kids from all different backgrounds, jamming out together. It was a powerful, loving, crazy time.
I wore this album out back around 93/94. Something made me think of this song so I did a quick search and found your reaction. Thanks for covering this one.
Europe is in my top two favorite bands! I think Joey Tempest’s voice is so underrated in rock and roll. Although there isn’t one of there songs that I don’t like this was during the era that lead guitarist John Norum had been replaced by Kee Marcello. I’m definitely camp John. John has an awesome solo career as well as being back with Europe. Check out his solo songs “Back on the Streets” and “Let Me Love You” as for Europe with Kee Marcello my favorite song is a ballad called “I’ll Cry For You”.
My English was not as good when this song came out, so I had to look up what Superstitious really meant. But I learned something knew that day and I love the song.
i love this song and it has one of the best guitar solos of all time. I never could figure what happened with Europe. They had two big hit albums and then really just disappeared. The other great song of theirs that springs to mind is "Open Your Heart"
Kee’s guitar solo in this song is amongst the best ever. It is used in many guitar schools across the world. It’s highly covered in TH-cam. It blew us all away when I came out for sure. Joey Tempest has the 2nd best vocal range of that era losing out to Steelheart’s Miljenko Matijević. Joey is an amazing singer.
If you want to check more rocking songs of Europe, then I recommend first two albums. Songs like Stormwind, Lyin Eyes, In the Future to Come, Seven Doors Hotel, Dance the Night Away, Memories, Children of this Time, Scream of Anger but also later ones like Heart of Stone, Cherokee, Ready Or Not, Got your Mind in the Gutter, Prisoners in Paradise as well as some ballads like Open Your Heart (version from Wings of Tomorrow album, not the music video on YT), Dreamer.
The man’s name is Joey Tempest, does it get any more rock?! Listening to Europe is like an experience, you feel elated afterwards, it’s just such a feel good time! Oh and superstitions, maybe, a little, lol. Don’t stand on the cracks! They are there to test you! 😂
Let the good times rock is my personal favorite and from the same album as this song. Another little more forgotten gem is On broken wings that are worth checking out and if you want a harder Europe I suggest Scream of anger! Enjoy your day and keep rocking 🤘
I believe that are many things that can’t be explained, I ran into one such case many years back. I know lots of people who are and the reasons even. I’m sure there are one or two things I remember from childhood that could lead me down that I don’t go down that path really at all.
Joey Tempest (Joakim Larson) always tried telling a story with his lyrics. One of the band once commented that Joey spent so much time and energy on his songwriting that they weren't sure he even knew what city they happened to be in while on tour. I didnt care, they were the first rock band I seriously followed when I was a teenager because Joey was cute as hell. 😉
You gotta listen to some more White Lion! The songs "Wait" and "Little Fighter". I so miss all this music! This is just what was on all the time. It really was great...and still is!
Bon Jovi and Europe - their best album are the ones after their big hits (New Jersey and Out Of This World). And "Superstitious" is from Out of this world. I recommend "Wild Is The Wind" from Bon Jovi. I think it's their best Non-Single ever.
As card carrying, long hair, leather jacket wearing headbanger from the 80's. I'm here to tell you, a person would have been made "fun of" for listening to Europe....... And Winger also. It's "Pop" wrapped in leather.
You want to hear Europe? listen to "Ninja" "Ready or Not" "Drink and a Smile" "Not supposed to sing the blues" "Riches to rags" "war of kings" "mercy you mercy me" "the second day" "children of the mind" "bag of bones" "my woman my friend" - the true sound of the band for most of their playing, the sweet mid eighties were just a phase. And yeah "Cherokee" is alright, too (too much keyboard though) - when they play the song in 21st century it sounds with a lot more grit and anger, not just sorrow. PS. - Guys really don't like to be called a "hair band". Yes they did have the hair for 5-6 years, but they played great music before, and have been playing even better after the phase - which makes only 12% of their career.
Out of this world is such an underrated album. Everyone talks about The Final Countdown album but for me Out of this world is a great album. Superstitious is such a great song with Kee Marcello on guitar.
