John came to my very modest home town in Essex to play live two years ago. He play his own tracks, stopped for a talk about life in Dire Straits for half an hour, then played some of the bands best tracks. After he signed our albums, chatted with us and showed us his guitars. It was the best live performance I’ve been to. A lovely bloke, we’re lucky to have him.

I bought my first guitar and started playing it in 1978 after listening to Dire Straits' first LP, I was 14 years old... I always continued to follow them and after their dissolution I continued to follow Mark Knopfler... I I was always wondering what happened to the other members of the original group, namely Pick Whiters, David Knopfler and John Illsley... so for me this video is a pleasant surprise, also this song is beautiful, it could easily be included posthumously in the first historical Dire Straits album since the atmosphere is the same! the story of Dire Straits was the rock fairytale par excellence of my adolescence... four friends with no money who live in a flat in Deptford, one teaches, one works in a record shop (Illsley), another works as a social worker and only Whiters had been a more well-known musician having played with Mal's Primitives... I will soon be 60 and a few years ago I started playing the guitar and writing songs again... in the songs I write and in my guitar you can hear a strong early Dire Straits influence!
John Illsey and the band are amazing. The vocals don’t override the instruments really well done. What a wonderful voice John’s daughter has. Thank you for the wonderful post.☮️🎶🎸

WOW!!!! Top of my playlist now, this track really hits everything for me, with the added bonus of sounding real old school Dire Straits. Keep grooving on John👍
I've only just started listening to John Illsleys solo work and really like it, yes like some have said there's echoes of dire straits, particularly this song but there's lots of influences and he has a great cool voice too. Bass players never fully get the attention they deserve unless they lead singers too like geddy lee, Phil Lynott etc so it's nice to hear his voice and see him play backing guitar too on some stuff. It's a bit like Brian May doing solo stuff, people sometimes can't separate them from their famous bands to appreciate them doing solo stuff even when it's good.

It's a Long Way Back
/
Lyrics
City of Angels was Burning bright
Setting the scene for an LA night Standing on the edge of tranquility
This was the moment to take in the view Shimmering with the red and blue
Sun going down at the Sunset Marquee People you knew but never met
Masters and maidens that slipped through the net Friends of friends of a certain kind
Talk of the town a line in the news
In the Gallery with a touch of the blues
All you need is a six blade knife
It's a long way back,
It's a long way back to Deptford Town
Sometimes it feels like these days will never end The push and pull of how we dance the messages we send
Natures voice unheard amongst bluster and desire No one seems to notice that the flames are getting higher
Which way is up no one can agree
Keep asking myself where's the sense of harmony
Smoke and heat of a hotel room
Songs from the bard like rare perfume
Fresh off the shelf now they're gone Nothing now will ever be the same
Could this be heaven by another name Depends what side you're on
If she asks you to go you can't decline Putting it down a line at a time
Don't move too fast better taking it slow
The world didn't start with the ticking of the clock Can't get by without a few knocks
One by one blow by blow
It's a long way back,
It's a long way back to Deptford Town
There's going to be a problem if we don't see eye to eye
Only time will tell before another battle cry Take time to reflect take time to consider this For you and me and him and her this life of utter bliss
Chorus
Another actor another stage
Who pays the pipers pay
Let's hope he don't get lost
Or tries to count the cost
You face the world with quiet contempt Was this really what you meant When all is frozen and nothing pure Its make or break kill or cure
I'm not sure anybody knows
The way it is and how it goes
Which way is up no one can agree Liberty fraternity Equality
From New York city to Monterey New Orleans to Frisco Bay
On every street in every town Out on the highway on with the show So much I just didn't know
So I breathed it in took it down
A gentle man with his gracious wife They had their dreams of a perfect life Worked the land until the sun went down They were lovers then in that market town The battle ground had left its legacy No words he spoke of this victory
He built a world that was safe and sound Life was good in that Market town
Take what you need not what you want There's no bars or restaurants
No playing in the park no visits to the Zoo Relax my friend and let things be
You have you're pride and honesty
None of this was planned
Or so they say
But the sun will shine and the winds will blow This all will pass as well we know
Once there was a river now it's a stream Looking back it feels like a dream Memories linger in your heart
Life feel shot cos time flies
Take a look through a child's eyes Now's the time to make a new start
It's a long way back,
It's a long way back to Deptford Town

You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down

Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"

evolve from the soul ❤☮️🎶✌️
Don't push it.
Nicely carrying the torch for the classic Dire straits sound, with a touch of breathy Leonard Cohen-esque vocals.
Excellent morceau.

Again, once again: I just love people, in particular musicians, who seemingly enjoy doing what they do. In this piece, everything is coming together, if You know what I mean..
. . . “ If You Know What I Mean “ …
That’s the name of one of Neil Diamond’s greatest song’s - and in a strange way not at all dissimilar in meaning , albeit a most unique song and vocal delivery.
