Maybe it's just me, but a toga seems like much more comfortable business/formal wear than a three piece suit or tuxedo. Romans also had a custom of taking baths (basically a spa trip nowadays) and played games like checkers or backgammon during their business meetings and political deals. Now compare this with golf. Which one sounds better?
Joe real toga can be quite heavy, because of the amount of material used. It was then replaced by pallium because it was too uncomfortable. That's just how clothing evolve: It started as simple, but the more formal it became, the more uncomfortable it is and finally replaced by something more comfortable. Modern suit was also like that. That's why it was originally called "lounge suit" ie suit for lounging.
I would prefer a toga with a tunic and shorts underneath it rather than a business suit. A toga may be sort of heavy, but it beats being constricted by a suit just to look nice.
I've started wearing clothing styled after ancient Rome and Greece and I've never been more comfortable, you get so much range of motion and because it's so airy you're not becoming mired in sweat. I also get the added benefit of looking down at the plebeians.
That toga falls beautifully. Most togas I've seen, look super awkward when warn. That one looks like the ones on statues and paintings from Rome's prime years.

@@emiledanielbouwer6963 you could get a diagram, measure it out on the piece of fabric and cut to marks. Wouldnt take too long probably though cutting skills and tools will differ
I enjoyed the talk, but was quite disappointed that the demonstration was only the short-cut bed-sheet version which is already easy to find on line.I would think that that Getty would be the one source of something more historically correct.

It was and is considered ancient Rome's "national costume"; as such, it had great symbolic value; however even among Romans, it was hard to put on, uncomfortable and challenging to wear correctly, and never truly popular. When circumstances allowed, those otherwise entitled or obliged to wear it opted for more comfortable, casual garments. It gradually fell out of use, firstly among citizens of the lower class, then those of the middle class. Eventually, it was worn only by the highest classes for ceremonial occasions
Is to be honest this toga is a bit short for this man and overall the toga looks like the 1st century BC toga rather is rather than a first century AD toga which was much larger
You mention the Empire. Was this how a Roman Republican would drape his toga as well? I've seen a few paintings/mosaics that wrap around a couple more times but I've never been able to figure out how.

How come this toga doesn't actually look like any of the togas you see on Roman statues or paintings? It's because it is not properly draped. This woman, whoever she is, doesn't know what she's talking about. Read Lillian May Wilson, A Study of the Roman Toga, John Hopkins, 1924.

There is a great deal of work currently being done on Roman material culture that is much more in depth and accurate than 'look at some fucking statues'. Learn some manners as well as some history.

It’s all about the fabric! Cheaper fabric usually tends not to fall quite as well, and when you need 6 yards, a good toga can easily run over $100

Long side should measure 18 feet. The short side should measure 7 feet. Just draw a curve and cut!

Yes this is the historically accurate shape for the cloth of the toga but, the way they have wrapped it around the man is not correct.
