Fun aspect of the game is clothing can be soaked/frozen which means it's not safely usable frequently until you've had a chance to dry it out. Also stripping a frozen corpse is far from simple IRL for the fact you may need to break it from what it's stuck in and the clothes may also be stuck to the skin. So it's not entirely artificial difficulty.
ESO is like that. In Skyrim you could loot everything except small clothes, all barrels, animals had stuff but in ESO, kill deer, find nothing. O.o I guess to make it easier on the servers. Still annoying.
Take 5 cat tails and put one in a box. Eat the cat tail until it is 50%... Hit ESC and eat the second one. Toss the half eatten cat tails into the box. Cat tails will stack and become full cat tails again. Try with other foods.

It's because your natural field of view is much, much higher and wider than what is available through a tv/monitor. A lot of games fudge it by making the view point much taller (well over 6ft), but TLD is going for accuracy with regards to how the player interacts with the world, which means the screen ends up tunneling your FOV. Having a body that you could look down at would probably help a lot with this, making you feel properly connected and "in the right place", but that's also a lot of work to add (and not look absolutely terrible) to an indy game. Also real cabins like this are legit tiny, with things like door height being 6ft or a little less (normal building door height is 7ft+). They are generally built by hand with little more than chainsaws as power equipment, because it's very difficult to get equipment to these places. So they are built to the very minimum necessary to do the job.
I've seen this series multiple times, and it's what drove me to play the long dark. Now that a series of updates are out, you should really go back to playing this game. I know it's not really the style that you do anymore, but I would still love to see it again!

I'm not sure if you'll even see this Gray, but came here to say... During quarantine last year, I had so much free time that I didn't really know what to do. This video popped up in my recommends and I'll admit that the title hooked me. I had never heard about this game before and I was curious to see what it was about because it had so many views. Fast forward about a week or so and I had all of your TLD content watched and I was on Steam to purchase the game. This is not normally a game I would play but your playthrough was so entertaining and I felt like you really sold it to me that I had to buy it. Thank you for introducing me to this game. A year later and I'm still playing it, remembering your tips and tricks that I've heard you give us in your videos while I play and sometimes I think, "What would Gray do in this situation?" and of course I can't see a cat tail stalk and not think of you lmao. I'm sad to see that you've stopped uploading content for this game and while I understand that you can't just do one game over and over, I would still really love to see you play this again, seeing that the game has come out with more content over the last 3 years. Am I the only one that loves this kind of cartoonish and beautiful graphics? It looks great, and it's better than those games that try to imitate every aspect of real life and thus making the game much heavier.
i found this game because of you gray and i love it, i've already logged 400 hours into it and man it's one of the best games i've ever played, wish youd play the updated version for another series. and screw pleasant valley and all of its ilk
This game is so freaking awesome, I've spent days and days playing it. I arrived at the point that I've made all resrarches and I literally become a survivor that didn't need artificial stuff anymore. I could survive just hunting and crafting what i need from nature. Then the story mode came out aaaand...the difficulty level was so hard that playing the game was kinda frustrating. Anyway I admit that seeing this video make me want to restart playing it. This game is a masterpiece that totally deserve any coin you spend for it.
I only played in the FM for 1 ep right when it came out and it wasn't on Interloper mode. Realistically though, snap decision. You effectively start dying the moment you start playing in FM, I want to come back to it, but I didn't want to spend time there in the first ep. If the weather turned bad while we were in there, it wouldn't have been good. Of course, you also don't expect to check like 10 structures in ML and not find anything that can make fire. I'd probably hit the trappers homestead next and, depending on the weather and supplies found there, I might raid FM again for more cat tails and such.
I usually have terrible luck with matches in ML on 'loper (easier to find in FM, tbh). But I often find a firestarter in one of the caves overlooking the lake, or in one of the hunter blinds.
This video introduced me to my now favorite game by far. Keep coming back to it even two years later. And it's still being worked on and extended. Thanks Gray and thanks Hinterland!

For me to most unrealistic thing is the thin ice on that lake, pond or what ever. Still it could happen if there is some heat source below it like geysir or something like that. Strong current would not be enough if it is cold enough. In that case there would be strong shell of ice on top of that current. Also it is a game :)
Norma They should really make it a polar bear in the snow area. Polar bears thrive through winter and then half hibernate during spring and summer. Cause the brown bears should be sleeping, some don't. But I think changing it to polar bears would make it better. It wouldn't really matter though just a little ocd type thing.
I don't see why people hate it when we kill animals, its something we been doing for centuries, its one of the reasons that we are still alive, people need to calm down about throwing a rock at a rabbit IN A VIDEO
Easy : i don't like when animals are killed in general. Also in fictional situations in movies, books and of course i like It even less when i need to kill and take the skins of animals to level up or improve my gear as in Assassin's Creed or Far Cry. It feels bad.

Heres a (kinda) helpful tip, if you boil and carry too much water, that is the *main* thing that weighs you down (that and clothes). ONLY melt and boil what you need and keep moving. Loved the vid! Keep movin'!
While you were boiling water I was thinking to my self in my years of gaming beginning in the early 80s who would have ever thought that the goal of a lot of games in 2018 would be to just survive as a human being. No princess to save, no nazis to shoot, dragons to slay, just snow to be boiled into water lol. But this new trend is a lot of fun and has revolutionized the industry. Look at all these games now. I can't wait to see what else will happen in gaming in the next 40 years assuming I can get enough water to survive that long lol
One things that always bugs me in games like this is that when you go in cabins there are blankets or sheets on the bed and you can't take them. Even the rugs on the floor you could rap around yourself to help hold in body heat. As someone who use to live in Alaska I can tell you I've gone outside with a small blanket rapped around me under my outer most layer on the really cold days. Just once I want a cold survival game to acknowledge that you should be picking these things up when you raid a cabin.
To get into the feeling of this gameplay I sat in my room with no blanket on with the AC turned on and when he puts some sort of heat for his character I would put my blanket on.

I had a pet rabbit once. I miss my fluffy little buddy. T~T I've also taken care of rabbits raised for meat. I haven't done the actual slaughtering, but I have done the cleaning and gutting. I've also twisted the head off a pigeon before preparing it to eat. Pigeon heads come off distressingly easily. But it's all stuff you get used to living on a farm. I've also been fascinated by survivalist stuff since I was a kid. Tried to MacGyver a home-security system when I was, like, *ten.* Complete with tiger trap. My mom has the patience of a *saint.*

It's not the FOV - it has to do with how low the camera is, not how wide the field is. The camera is definitely lower in this game than most other first-person games.
Cribber Icarus that's almost all of these gibberish speaking let's players. Loud and obnoxious. Check out frankie, he's basically the most competent let's player there is. He hasn't uploaded in awhile though. Fooster is another let's player I found who is not obnoxious.
Id rather have episodic as well, and I wont watch livestream recordings, seems pointless. I work 12 hour shifts and if he livestreams story mode Im 100% positive I won't be watching it, not because I disagree with his decision, but because I don't like livestreams and the interaction with the viewers, Id much rather hear his commentary then listen to him talk to a bunch of people who says stupid stuff just to get attention from him.
Absolutely love this game... As soon as you found the magnifying glass you should have scarpered out to the fishing huts and made a fire while it was still daylight... you would have got water sooner... also pickup sticks, always pick up sticks... can never have enough sticks.... did I mention picking up sticks? ... Loved your play though... I was sure you were done fer there for a while... Flares and lighter fluid.... saved me a few times.

Not that big a deal, interloper mode would be pretty impressive as I can’t seem to get past 2 days on it. On stalker though I can get to the point I get bored. Edit; on my current game I’m on day 34, stalker. Just came back to the game after a long break. Hard as I haven’t been able to find a hatchet, hacksaw, or heavy hammer. Once my intestinal parasites are gone I will be running to FM my to see if I can make an axe.
If I watch 10 different videos and the other 9 didn’t require me to adjust the volume. Then it’s him being loud. Which means he’s either speaking to close to the mic, or he’s trying to sound upbeat and enthusiastic as a “professional” channel as oppose to the ones where people whisper when making videos to either not wake their parents or hide what they’re doing from their parents.
Coyote Rx my volume is on max on my phone and he’s not loud. Headphones however would probably seem loud because they are literally on your ears and your volume shouldn’t be maxed out anyway.
Krondelo that is a valid point. I lived in northern Wisconsin near the Canadian border and even late fall most the ice is solid. And the dead of winter? You can drive trucks out on the lakes its no big deal.
My fiance is moving in and already moved his Xbox here, and we've bonded over dying together, repeatedly, lol. I think I made it like an hour and a half in the first playthrough. 😂 I startled him with my utter loyalty to cattail stalks, warned him off of Forlorn Muskeg (just died there tonight, fell in the water, was warming by my fire with like two health, then burned myself and died, while freezing. 😅), and showed him how to crouch to be less detectable by predators. I was attacked by wolves three times in one playthough, though, so my luck isn't so great. We absolutely suck, because this isn't even on a hard mode, but we'll get there. Maybe. 😂 Anyway, I... for some reason this playlist of videos is my favorite of Grey's, and I sort of hoard them unless I'm going through a bit of something, like I'm sick or something, to distract me and keep my spirits up. My Mom died a month ago, and next week I'm going to have a procedure done that's apparently really painful, and because I have a chronic pain thing I've been told I'm pretty much going to be in Hell on earth for a few days until things calm down. The stress alone, willingly walking in and doing it, to get it over with, because my doctor is really pushing me to not wait, and knowing I"m so underprepared to handle the pain... it's really really scary. I want my Mom to be here, and she's not, and I'm not really even able to mourn her because now I have to get into this battle mode. And the whole thing may end up not being strictly necessary; we're just... trying to avoid a bigger future problem down the road. I'm trying to gather up things that make me happy, refuges. Music and books and movies and videos. Things to distract and uplift, when I'm in a really bad way. This playlist made the list. I'm so happy it exists. My fiance can struggle playing the game IRL, yes, but he won't always be there, and I'd much rather have The Lnng Dark Grey as my co-pilot than go it alone overnight. I'm just... thankful these are here.
I agree, one of the very best survival games ever made. I love how people whine and cry about how hard, even easy is lol. This is a REAL survival game! Stranded Deep sucks now, it once was a great game until they changed a dozen things that made it not much of a survival game anymore.I say it's about rated for 9 year olds. So bad in my opinion I uninstalled it, and I have 100's of hours, it once was my favorite game! Idiots! But on a positive note, THANKS LONG DARK DEVS! BTW @GrayStillPlays BEARS ARE NOT INSTANT DEATH! Play the game more and you may find this out! How is this possible? because this game focuses on reality so much, Bears in real life may stop attacking you for no reason, and walk off. They do the same thing in this game, (if your lucky!). :) What shape are you in after a Bear attack? Not good lol,.. but still alive, and as long as you aren't bleeding to death very rapidly, you can still survive! So awesome this game! *Turn off the music! *Also stop cutting the scenes out! Otherwise it's pointless to watch.
You bleed to death very rapidly, are ALWAYS put to 10% condition, are freezing constantly, your clothes will be trashed, and occasionally they turn around and finish the job. If you have your ankle sprained, good luck. He was referring to the fact that when he has so little clothing, was probably injured, and had no way to escape, considering you'll bleed out your condition in the 20 minutes it takes for you to tear up clothes and make bandages. Plus if you've infected bad times ensue, it's a metaphor/hyperbole.
I feel like the game is cool but I wasted 33 minutes of my life because he left the parts in that he should have cut out... (the running around) it's okay to leave some scavenging in when you find stuff, but I wanted to see more of the game, he literally ran around looting for 30 minutes,. Than started one fire, melted/drank snow, ate cat tail stalks and said "well I survived" lol
It may be kinda useless now, but in the train in the Forlorn Muskeg there's usually a windbreaker and another flare. At least every time I've played interloper that's what I find. I hope this helps ;w;

You'd think a true survival game would let you take the rugs from the cabins. Even take the padding out of the armchairs.
You can break down the armchairs, you get wood and cloth from doing so.

Trappers seems really out of the way I suggest hitting the logging camp and forest lookout

Easy : i don't like when animals are killed in general. Also in fictional situations in movies, books and of course i like It even less when i need to kill and take the skins of animals to level up or improve my gear as in Assassin's Creed or Far Cry. It feels bad.

Heres a (kinda) helpful tip, if you boil and carry too much water, that is the *main* thing that weighs you down (that and clothes). ONLY melt and boil what you need and keep moving. Loved the vid! Keep movin'!

While you were boiling water I was thinking to my self in my years of gaming beginning in the early 80s who would have ever thought that the goal of a lot of games in 2018 would be to just survive as a human being. No princess to save, no nazis to shoot, dragons to slay, just snow to be boiled into water lol. But this new trend is a lot of fun and has revolutionized the industry. Look at all these games now. I can't wait to see what else will happen in gaming in the next 40 years assuming I can get enough water to survive that long lol

One things that always bugs me in games like this is that when you go in cabins there are blankets or sheets on the bed and you can't take them. Even the rugs on the floor you could rap around yourself to help hold in body heat. As someone who use to live in Alaska I can tell you I've gone outside with a small blanket rapped around me under my outer most layer on the really cold days. Just once I want a cold survival game to acknowledge that you should be picking these things up when you raid a cabin.

To get into the feeling of this gameplay I sat in my room with no blanket on with the AC turned on and when he puts some sort of heat for his character I would put my blanket on.

LOVE this game. Such intention to detail, so much realism & immersion. Been playing it for years now.
I had a pet rabbit once. I miss my fluffy little buddy. T~T I've also taken care of rabbits raised for meat. I haven't done the actual slaughtering, but I have done the cleaning and gutting. I've also twisted the head off a pigeon before preparing it to eat. Pigeon heads come off distressingly easily. But it's all stuff you get used to living on a farm.
I've also been fascinated by survivalist stuff since I was a kid. Tried to MacGyver a home-security system when I was, like, *ten.* Complete with tiger trap. My mom has the patience of a *saint.*

No it's not, just change your fov.
It's not the FOV - it has to do with how low the camera is, not how wide the field is. The camera is definitely lower in this game than most other first-person games.

Id rather have episodic as well, and I wont watch livestream recordings, seems pointless. I work 12 hour shifts and if he livestreams story mode Im 100% positive I won't be watching it, not because I disagree with his decision, but because I don't like livestreams and the interaction with the viewers, Id much rather hear his commentary then listen to him talk to a bunch of people who says stupid stuff just to get attention from him.

Absolutely love this game... As soon as you found the magnifying glass you should have scarpered out to the fishing huts and made a fire while it was still daylight... you would have got water sooner... also pickup sticks, always pick up sticks... can never have enough sticks.... did I mention picking up sticks? ... Loved your play though... I was sure you were done fer there for a while... Flares and lighter fluid.... saved me a few times.

Not that big a deal, interloper mode would be pretty impressive as I can’t seem to get past 2 days on it. On stalker though I can get to the point I get bored.
Edit; on my current game I’m on day 34, stalker. Just came back to the game after a long break. Hard as I haven’t been able to find a hatchet, hacksaw, or heavy hammer. Once my intestinal parasites are gone I will be running to FM my to see if I can make an axe.

If I watch 10 different videos and the other 9 didn’t require me to adjust the volume. Then it’s him being loud. Which means he’s either speaking to close to the mic, or he’s trying to sound upbeat and enthusiastic as a “professional” channel as oppose to the ones where people whisper when making videos to either not wake their parents or hide what they’re doing from their parents.
Coyote Rx my volume is on max on my phone and he’s not loud. Headphones however would probably seem loud because they are literally on your ears and your volume shouldn’t be maxed out anyway.

you need some serious nasty ass current so it doesn't freeze. For example in the thick of winter St Lawrence river is frozen stiff
Krondelo that is a valid point. I lived in northern Wisconsin near the Canadian border and even late fall most the ice is solid. And the dead of winter? You can drive trucks out on the lakes its no big deal.
Grey's starting point was right next to a waterfall. Since the thin ice wasn't far from it, I figure its gotta be flowing there, too.

My fiance is moving in and already moved his Xbox here, and we've bonded over dying together, repeatedly, lol. I think I made it like an hour and a half in the first playthrough. 😂 I startled him with my utter loyalty to cattail stalks, warned him off of Forlorn Muskeg (just died there tonight, fell in the water, was warming by my fire with like two health, then burned myself and died, while freezing. 😅), and showed him how to crouch to be less detectable by predators. I was attacked by wolves three times in one playthough, though, so my luck isn't so great. We absolutely suck, because this isn't even on a hard mode, but we'll get there. Maybe. 😂
Anyway, I... for some reason this playlist of videos is my favorite of Grey's, and I sort of hoard them unless I'm going through a bit of something, like I'm sick or something, to distract me and keep my spirits up. My Mom died a month ago, and next week I'm going to have a procedure done that's apparently really painful, and because I have a chronic pain thing I've been told I'm pretty much going to be in Hell on earth for a few days until things calm down. The stress alone, willingly walking in and doing it, to get it over with, because my doctor is really pushing me to not wait, and knowing I"m so underprepared to handle the pain... it's really really scary. I want my Mom to be here, and she's not, and I'm not really even able to mourn her because now I have to get into this battle mode. And the whole thing may end up not being strictly necessary; we're just... trying to avoid a bigger future problem down the road.
I'm trying to gather up things that make me happy, refuges. Music and books and movies and videos. Things to distract and uplift, when I'm in a really bad way. This playlist made the list. I'm so happy it exists. My fiance can struggle playing the game IRL, yes, but he won't always be there, and I'd much rather have The Lnng Dark Grey as my co-pilot than go it alone overnight. I'm just... thankful these are here.
I agree, one of the very best survival games ever made. I love how people whine and cry about how hard, even easy is lol. This is a REAL survival game! Stranded Deep sucks now, it once was a great game until they changed a dozen things that made it not much of a survival game anymore.I say it's about rated for 9 year olds. So bad in my opinion I uninstalled it, and I have 100's of hours, it once was my favorite game! Idiots!

BTW @GrayStillPlays BEARS ARE NOT INSTANT DEATH! Play the game more and you may find this out! How is this possible? because this game focuses on reality so much, Bears in real life may stop attacking you for no reason, and walk off. They do the same thing in this game, (if your lucky!). :)
What shape are you in after a Bear attack? Not good lol,.. but still alive, and as long as you aren't bleeding to death very rapidly, you can still survive! So awesome this game!

You bleed to death very rapidly, are ALWAYS put to 10% condition, are freezing constantly, your clothes will be trashed, and occasionally they turn around and finish the job. If you have your ankle sprained, good luck. He was referring to the fact that when he has so little clothing, was probably injured, and had no way to escape, considering you'll bleed out your condition in the 20 minutes it takes for you to tear up clothes and make bandages. Plus if you've infected bad times ensue, it's a metaphor/hyperbole.
I feel like the game is cool but I wasted 33 minutes of my life because he left the parts in that he should have cut out... (the running around) it's okay to leave some scavenging in when you find stuff, but I wanted to see more of the game, he literally ran around looting for 30 minutes,. Than started one fire, melted/drank snow, ate cat tail stalks and said "well I survived" lol

but in the train in the Forlorn Muskeg there's usually a windbreaker and another flare. At least every time I've played interloper that's what I find. I hope this helps ;w;
