  • Have you ever heard of this profession? Medical illustration is an incredibly cool career path that relatively few artists are aware of. Spend 20 minutes with me as I draw and paint the human brain and we'll discuss-
    • What is Medical Illustration?
    • How did I become a Medical Illustrator?
    • Why did I eventually quit?
    For more info about medical illustration, check out the awesome website of my alma mater Augusta University:

    Thank you for sharing this! I have loved working in surgery for over 10 years and have also had a huge passion for art. I have had many people suggest this career to me and I honestly feel this would be a perfect marriage of medicine and art. I really wish there were more school locations for this specialty.

      I know what you mean - that was my primary misgiving as well - I didn't want to travel so far from home to be able to attend. It ended up being a fantastic experience though. So cool that this resonates for you. Good luck and continue your great work as a healer :)

    This spoke to me. I’m in my 40s and in a career exploration phase, taking digital art courses to rekindle parts of me I abandoned in my early 20s when I went into media production (then worked in public broadcasting and later documentary film). I’m primarily a writer so I gravitate to the storytelling aspect, but I’ve always loved science. I’m now thinking about ideas like science communication and explainer animation. Channels like Ted-ED or Kurzgesagt are doing great work explaining big ideas with stylized technical information and also what might broadly be considered editorial illustration or infographics. So for those of us who would not have been one of those top 9 applicants, there are lots of interesting other options to explore (and I’m still thinking about my specific direction). I know it’s a bit outside your current focus, but would you consider expanding this conversation by talking to illustrators from NatGeo or similar? I love hearing about the paths people take, so I loved hearing your story. Thanks ;)

    Hi Hardy! This video was so great to hear. I'm also a medical illustrator and I'm working on a neurosurgery illustration at this very moment while watching the video. Your video really touched me because I feel like we are very similar in terms of our artistic journey and future goals. I've been struggling recently with trying to find a balance between my "professional" art and "personal" art, and your thoughts really resonated with me.
    Also, just wanted to say it's really cool to see another graduate of MCG! I graduated from the same program in 2019, so I'm still pretty fresh in the field.

    I’m 17 currently trying to find my future career and currently taking medical classes. I was going to be a nurse practitioner or registered nurse but watching this video has changed my mind. I’ve always had problems with my future career and art since I love art and didn’t want to leave it behind but being a nurse would take up my time. My teacher had recently recommended me to being a medical illustrator and hadn’t thought much of it until I looked it up. This video has changed my mind completely and thank you I hope I’ll be able to be a medical illustrator in the future.

      Hi Dr. Gupta, very nice to meet you and I'm so glad you reached out. I'm happy to advise - I would definitely direct you to my alma mater - Augusta University and their medical illustration department. www.augusta.edu/alliedhealth/medicalillustration/ There is some really excellent information on the career and the program there if you are interested in pursuing a degree in the subject (although I would imagine that a medical doctor may have experienced quite enough schooling for one lifetime :) It is a competitive field and quite technically demanding in subject matter since so much depends on accuracy. But, for those who love art and science equally, it is profoundly fascinating and rewarding. I could go on and on but I think the website will do a great job of answering any questions you may have.

    So cool! Your way of explaining and your skills are amazing. I have a doctorate in biology, I completely understand your scientific projections, and I apply science in my own projects for scientific illustrations. I feel I still have a lot to learn but I feel comfortable with my results. I will be visiting your channel more often from now on. Thank you very much. There is, however, many things that will benefit your audience and are hard to learn elsewhere, for example, when you select a line, how you change it colors?, levels of opacity, etc.

    Very helpful video, thank you so much for making it! I’m actually in the process of applying to a medical illustration program, and so I wanted to get more information about this career. One thing I’m curious about is if you know any other branch of medical illustration besides legal art? I am interested in doing something related to ux/ui for medical educational purpose.

      That's awesome! It's a cool world to work in. There are definitely other markets for medical illustrators - it's not all legal. Medical illustrators and animators often work for medical device companies (one of my old classmates works for Arthrex which is a company that makes surgical joint prosthetics). Many hospitals have staff medical illustrators who create patient education graphics or might help a doctor describe some new treatment or surgical technique for a medical journal. There are editorial applications too - medical illustrators work for medical journals and science publications (my teacher worked for Scientific American for many years). It is a pretty broad field so there is lots of opportunity - especially since there are so few certified medical illustrators. If I can help further, reach out any time :)

    Hi Hardy, I'm certainly intrigued about Medical Illustration, and would love some more resources and videos about it. I'm based in Canada, and I think there's only one Medical Illustration program here, at the University of Toronto. Your story is very inspiring, as UofT's program also has some strict entry requirements. Like you, I love Art, but also Science, and I have always struggled to find a way to combine the two. Thanks again for the video, and I do hope you make more on the topic.

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Toronto program is the only one that I'm aware of in Canada but there may be others. In that general part of North America there are also programs in Baltimore (Johns Hopkins) and the University of Michigan (which may not be defunct?). Not sure if US schools would be an option. If there is anything I can do to help you investigate this world further, reach out any time!

      That's a good question. It stayed pretty consistent during my 14 year run but I'm not sure if many industry-wide changes have taken place since I left in 2021. I would imagine that the fundamentals will remain the same though. There is a focus on accuracy and the ability to tell a visual story that makes a complex concept as simple as possible. It's a challenge but quite satisfying artistically.

      That's awesome! I would definitely check out this website (which is the school that I went to) www.augusta.edu/alliedhealth/medicalillustration/ . There are other programs in North America (Johns Hopkins University, UT Southwestern in Dallas and one in Toronto, I believe). I'm not too sure what to recommend regarding internships in the field. I don't believe I ever worked with an intern during my 14 years within the profession just because a masters in medical illustration was a prerequisite so this is one of those rare fields where the degree does seem to matter as much as the portfolio. If I can help further, please let me know!

    I love this, Hardy, thank you so much for sharing your perspective! I initially hoped to pursue concept art as a career, but since getting an internship designing characters for an game (as amazing as that is!), I've realized that I don't really prefer using my creativity to develop someone else's vision, and I might be happier just designing for my own personal projects.
    I'm really interested in animal anatomy and think I'd appreciate the more technical side of medical illustration: do you think there's much opportunity for veterinary medical illustration, as opposed to just specializing in human anatomy (or do you know where those types of illustrators might be employed)? Also, just out of curiosity, how competitive would you say the field generally is in comparision to concept art? I'm sorry for the long comment, but I sincerely value all the information you've shared here, once more!

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so glad this was helpful. It sounds like you are really self aware with your art which is great. Yes! There is definitely a market for illustrators specializing in veterinary illustration. When I was studying medical illustration in Augusta, GA we visited the veterinary school at UGA in Athens and they had a staff of several full time illustrators who specialized in exactly that. I believe they had the same training that I had as a medical illustrator but eventually chose a different specialty. I would imagine the work and challenges to be similar but just with lots of different anatomy to learn (one species was plenty for me! :). But that career definitely exists. If you check out veterinary school websites, you may be able to learn more. OR, I would definitely direct you to my alma mater at Augusta University's Medical Illustration department and I'll bet someone can point you to more resources. Good luck!

      @@fowlerillus This is seriously amazing, thank you so much for the informative response! It's awesome to hear that vet illustration has an active market, and I guess it was just hard to be sure if it was a viable career initially since it seems pretty niche. But this is very enlightening, and I'll be sure to check out different vet schools' websites to find some more information (and I'm definitely going be looking to Augusta's site, as well). Again, thank you a *ton* for the input Hardy, I genuinely appreciate all your time!

      My impression is that most working medical illustrators have an MS degree from an accredited program and then go on to get the professional (CMI) certification after graduation. While you could theoretically be a brilliant medical illustrator without these degrees, this seems to be one of the few art fields where diplomas really matter. I may be wrong about this or have outdated impressions but that is how it was during my decade in the industry
