  • The Collings 470 JL is the result of years-long conversations, engineering, testing, tweaking, playing, and listening. And then doing it all over again until it was right. From first sketches through plugging in the final prototypes, every aspect of this model inside and out is the result of a unique approach, technique, and style - both from the builder’s and player’s point of view - culminating in a one-of-a-kind electric guitar experience.
    In collaboration with our friend Julian Lage, we proudly present the Collings 470 JL.

    Ordering one through my dealer as I watch this. The OM1JL is the best guitar I have ever owned and this will be the best electric. And I've played a ton of boutique guitars. You guys are great and thank you for collaborating with Julian. He is once in a generation type of guitar player.

    I was lucky enough to see Julian yesterday in Cologne. He exclusively played this guitar. The whole trio was fantastic. The location, the Cologne "Philharmonie", is well-known for its outstanding acoustic excellence. A perfect setting for enjoying this. This guitar is a perfect match for Julian's playing. I could discern a clear acoustic "soul" in every register and dynamic range. A bit like a breathing organism. This thing is not just another Guitar. Simply great. Pat should also talk to the Collings guys ;-)

    I got my 470JL last week. I’m an intermediate player and didn’t think I was worthy of it / thought you’d need to be a high level player to get the most out of it. I was wrong and love it. It is incredibly dynamic clean and expressive and gives you back so much. I’m a pretty decent violin player and this guitar responds similar to my violin with respect to the acoustic clarity and response. It’s phenomenal and I didn’t expect to feel that way. That and my i35 are still my favorite guitars out of my slightly indulgent collection. It truly is a race car and an extremely special guitar. It can be played with overdrive and more blues / rock music as well as it plays with Jazz. What Julian is saying isn’t sales puff - I’ve really experienced it. It also reminds me of my parent’s grand piano - It is a special special guitar.

    Collings “out-Martined’ Martin, then ‘out-Gibsoned” Gibson. Now the folks in Austin turned their attention to Gretsch, and it is a foregone conclusion what’s the result now is. Viva La Guitarra!

    • @ZRJZZZZZ
      @ZRJZZZZZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it’s not, and it never has been, although we are not talking about art per se. This involves the technical ability to build an instrument according to tolerances that can be measured by devices as well as in the hands of a competent player. The “it’s subjective“ argument is a universal avoidance tool to avoid a debate on the facts.

  • @JohnnyFriendly
    @JohnnyFriendly 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not quite a Duo Jet as some below have suggested. For starters, the bridge is a tune-o-matic which takes away the harmonics characteristic to a Gretsch. Then there's the Centre block - a big no-no and never found on a real Jet - and finally we don't really know what these pickups are. To my ears the most authentic-sounding dynas today are made by TV Jones (T'Armonds) so I'm a bit suspicious of others touting their versions as authentic.

      Well, the ‘good for consumers, not as for manufacturers’ other side of that idea is that you can get amazingly great guitars at bizarrely low price points these days- I have models on both ends of that spectrum and I regularly wonder how any company can make money in the high end when the mid- and low-end of the market is SO STRONG (playing a British/American designed, Asian-made FretKing right now that kills guitars 2 and 3 times its’ price...) 21st C weirdness, where the good parts are so stirred in with the bad parts it makes you dizzy to think...

    There's a ton of cork-sniffing and marketing bullshit in this video. At certain points it almost comes off as parody, e.g. "It's diverse and dynamic, and that's the nature of tradition". "The guitar is 3-dimensional, when I look down I see a narrative unfolding". Look Julian, I love you man, but you're kind of talking out of your ass here.
    "The guitar sounds so good electrically because it sounds so good acoustically". Bro, it's a sealed hollow-body with a trestle block. It has the acoustic properties of a cigar box, and it will be drowned out by moderate conversation. If you put some f-holes in it, then okay, it would have a bit of unplugged character, but not much, given all the damping from the set-in pickups and that big ol' Bigsby.
    Look, I'm sure it's a nice guitar, but there's nothing groundbreaking about it. Also, the Bigsby bugs me on this guitar because it seems like an aesthetic afterthought. I've almost never seen Julian actually use the Bigsby on this guitar, which is very typical for jazz guys with tremolo systems - they're usually too involved with the normal mechanics of fretting and picking to utilize the tremolo to any significant degree. So you're basically paying an insane amount of money for a guitar that has all the tuning weaknesses that come with a Bigsby.
    You can spend your life savings on this guitar or you can buy a Gretsch which will sound just as good (and look weirdly similar...hmmmm). You can even mod the pickups if you're really sonically restless and it will still cost you vastly less money than this guitar.

    He credits the body shape and the lines of the guitar and the inclusion of the Bigsby to Collings?! He goes on to say that Colling's design decisions are so "bold". He references Dynasonic pickups, semi-hollow construction with trestle block bracing down the center - All the hallmarks of a vintage Gretsch. Anyone watching knows this guitar is just a reinterpretation (rip-off) of a Gretsch Duo Jet. At least John Mayer and PRS had the honesty and integrity to tell us that his Silver Sky was based on his favorite vintage Strats.
