I was in downtown San Jose last Thursday afternoon and I followed some furries going to the convention. I remember that some furries offered me to have their picture taken and I had some good interactions and laughs that day. It was such an excellent experience to see many furries and normies get together and experience the event. A good chunk of the fandom works in IT. There's a joke that airlines don't let too many of us fly at once because if there's a crash, the internet dies XD
It's really good for the cities economy so they definitely don't want to run them out. Like it's great for your city if they decide to set up there for a convention every year since it brings in millions of dollars of revenue to the city's economy.
The furry subculture is often associated with beastiality while anime is more just associated with autistic nerds who don't necessarily harm animals to get off.
They can't, because they risk outing the fact, whatever they are into, probably has just as many "bad apples" apart of it too lol. There's nothing wrong with the fandom. The fandom is one core enjoyment. If it's an enjoyment as broad as "anthropomorphism" then that will bring in a plethora of people good, bad, weird, kinky and the like. But people love to hate and generalize at the end of the day. Most do not want to research outside of their comfort zone. That's why we still have as much hate as we did when the CSI episode first dropped so many years ago 😅
Anime is like a bunch of smaller separate fandoms. Furry is more of a subculture and some of them spend too much time vocally denying anything wrong with the fandom, however much or little it may be, and not enough actually doing anything about it.

Was out in SF one night pre covid, a holiday but can't remember which, maybe even new years. Anyway a huge group of furries ended up at the same place, totally unexpected but made the night super fun and unforgettable. You all are most welcome :D
These are amazing. It's a whole time where even the most gruff tough dude can forget his social obligations for a little while and act like "uwu I boop your snoot and waggy waggy my tail" and it's fucking amazing. It's also the only subculture where complete strangers can hug and cuddle and it's not inherently sexual, literally our local public furry group has "cuddle piles" all the time. A furry convention. More or less like an anime convention without the anime and add animal people. A lot of nerdy people (in a good way) hanging out and having a good time. Not a whole lot more to it than that. It's very similar to other conventions.

There's no "finally" about that. Annual furry charity fundraising has been going on for decades and this convention being featured just celebrated 25 years. There are many other furry conventions doing the same thing each year too with chosen charities (changes often each con to spread out the help). But what's refreshing is the narrative of the news reporting, not really requiring folks to "screech" in defense of false claims or definitions 🤙 which is REALLY refreshing to see 😊
Thankfully it really hasn't. Gradually I've been seeing a big shift for the better over the last decade, similar to the trials anime fandom went through during the 2000s. Most of the online self proclaimed "furry haters" anymore are like... literal children so grain of salt really 🤙
Very similar from first look yes! That's a good comparison. The difference is that each suit is a unique, custom handmade character which is often someone's original character to be worn an acted in. The quality of the suits are also often MUCH better than mascots (mascots are usually mass produced or done cheaply). But fan interaction and entertaining people can be quite similar.
