    You won't regret reacting to this show. It's a masterpiece. And almost entirely based off real events, down to the lines of dialogue sometimes (the veterans at the start of each episode are the surviving members of Easy company. You’ll find out who’s who at the end of the show.) Buckle up, though. It’s a wild ride.

    15:29 they *really* could have been shot for that. Mutiny is a death-penalty level offense. But since it was *all* the NCOs, it sent the message that there was something wrong with CPT Sobel’s leadership and not just a few disgruntled troops.

    Every time I see this, the scene which has the most impact is when we're given the view of the Channel on the night of the 5th - choked with ships of every sort, and hundreds of planes in the air, filled with American, British and Canadian boys and men. The image represents the two-word fulfillment of a promise to the peoples of France, Belgium, Holland, and other European nations that had suffered under years of Nazi occupation - "We're coming."

    I found this in an article one day. Despite the harshness of Sobel’s training and his seemingly malicious behavior, his men freely admitted that he was the finest training officer they could have hoped for. “One of the reasons that Easy Company excelled was undoubtedly Captain Sobel,” recalled Winters. An epic journey is coming. Winters helping each soldier up is part of being the exceptional leader.

    I just watched your reaction of Saving Private Ryan and was really impressed. I didn't comment to that , but now seeing your reaction to this I just wanted to tell you that you guys are great and you have a new subscriber. It gives me hope for the country when I see younger folks ( no disrespect meant--I'm over 50 now so you're young to me 😉 ) with such intelligent and thoughtful reactions and also showing respect for those that gave so much. These guys were so young as well when they went to war and many of course never came back and those that did carried a heavy burden for life.
    This is an amazing series and when I first watched it back in the day it was an incredible experience. I hope it is for you guys as well. I'll be watching again with you.

    Hey, literally the first thing I watched on your channel it popped up because I watch a lot of band of Brothers reactions. I've studied world war II for 30 years. I like to watch this reactions because I like to see younger people who don't know that much about what it took to save the world. I like your reaction cuz you said at the outset it was going to be history lesson and it will be a history lesson. All of these characters are real easy company is real. Everything you see is the most part true to fact but you'll get the gist. Another reason I enjoyed your reaction it's because you didn't talk too much you reacted subtly and with the right questions and waited for the answers. So I'm looking forward to the next episode day of days. You're going to laugh and holy s*** you're going to cry. And you're so going to fall in love with these guys.You're in for a hell of a ride. • @docbearmb
      @docbearmb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To give more info: that status 4F and a bunch more would be assigned by the draft board after they looked a draftee over. If you got a 1A status, you could start packing your bags. You were about to be activated.
      Worth noting, not everyone got drafted. Even then, especially in WWII, a large percentage of servicemen were volunteers.

    • @richarddowns7162
      @richarddowns7162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@docbearmb Just a little clarification. Everyone just about wanted to volunteer, and MANY did in the first few months of the war. After that though the Army requested, and government approved, no more volunteers because the Army couldn't build enough housing and training facilities to take so many volunteers so quickly. Even equipment was short; some training was taking place with trucks with a sign painted "tank" on them, and bags of flour substituting for grenades. After that men were drafted in numbers matching the building of new bases and housing to accommodate them. Nearly everyone still wanted to join but had to wait until they had the infrastructure to take them.

    • @Farbar1955
      @Farbar1955 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      During the Viet Nam war I was listed 4-H which meant I was available to be drafted if the draft went that deep any given year. Fortunately the draft ended four months before I turned 18 (I would have joined first before a draft happened). During WW2 my grandfather was drafted at age 33 with three kids because the US needed the manpower by that time. He was not too pleased but he did his duty.

    • @docbearmb
      @docbearmb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richarddowns7162 I’m not so sure about the training facilities being in short supply (though it could be possible.) I say that because I know my father received his training at various college campuses throughout the US. Texas A&M, Penn State and one or two others he mentioned. Apparently the facilities weren’t overflowing with the usual students since many were overseas.

    • @richarddowns7162
      @richarddowns7162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@docbearmb Sounds like your father was training as an officer. Their training differed quite a bit from the majority enlisted men.
      On December 5, 1942, via Executive Order 9279, men 18 to 37 years of age were banned from voluntarily enlisting for the duration of the war. The purpose of the ban was to protect the nation’s manpower pool, while at the same time easing the overtaxing of the various military branches’ training facilities. The draft provided the manpower for all branches until the end of the war.

    I love this show, I have watched it multiple times over the years, and lately have enjoyed watching reactors discover the series for the first time. You were correct about Sobel. The truth about Sobel is that he was an excellent training officer but was not a good field commander. In later life many of the men admitted (including some of the sergeants who tried to resign) one of the reasons that Easy Company was so good at their jobs was the training that Sobel had put them through. Another point is that Winters did not find out about what the Sergeant's did until much later Sobel got transferred the charges against him and he was reinstated. It was only years later that he found out what the men had done.

    Something you may have missed. M1 is their rifle. When Joe Toye was complaining about all the crap they were packing, he mentioned a Mae West. Currahee is Cherokee for "Stand Alone" it describes the mountain as it is separated from all other hills in the area. So in addition to being an important part of the Regiment's training (they ran Currahee at least once a day), "Stand Alone" was very applicable to paratroopers, who would jump behind enemy lines and, at least be cut off from all support until the other troops broke through the enemy lines. Hence their use of it as a motto.
    There's a documentary of interviews with the surviving members of Easy Company called "We Stand Alone, Together" that would also be good for you to watch.

    "Jump canceled - high winds on the landing zone (LZ)". As you descend, your chute remains above you, fully opened. When you land, it collapses. But if there is strong wind on the ground, it can fill your chute and drag you to hell and gone. You have to learn to pull in the lines from one side to keep it under control.
    Much easier now with smaller, ram-air parachutes.
    Sobel wasn't being honored with his reassignment; it's an embarrassment to the army to have to discipline officers. It's an admission that you've put an unqualified man in a leadership position. The solution is to promote him to Head Toilet Cleaner in some bodunk location where he can't hurt anybody. Or embarrass you.
    'Glad you're doing this series.

    Of course it's still training!!!! Didn't you see where they were located? N.C. is North Carolina. Just to let you know, there was no combat in North America during WW2. North Carolina is in North America

    Great reaction! I appreciate the learning attitude and the humility and respect you've brought to it. Good job on the edit, too. It's hard to trim these down, but you kept all the right parts IMO. This is an awesome series. I'm looking forward to your reactions to the rest. +1 Subscriber

    I love that you guys are watching/ reacting to this show. By far the best mini series ever made. It's made with such respect for the men off Easy Company and WW2 in general.
    This is television making at it's pinnacle, you will laugh, cry and be ultimately heartbroken by the true events that these men went through. Can't wait to see more off this series from you.

    It is interesting to go to Google Earth and look at Camp Toccoa and see how far Currahee is from the actual campsite and how it's basically the only mountain in the area. Also fun to watch reactors go from Hey It's Ross to I hate Sobel, props to David Schwimmer!

    I think it's important to remember that all of these soldiers have already been through basic training, some are already serving NCOs and officers. They can quit paratrooper school or be cut out at any time and sent back to their previous unit. They are putting up with Sobel voluntarily.
    The US Army had a policy of rapidly replacing any officer who ran into difficulty in his career. They would return them to a similar position to where they were successful. That didn't matter if you were a lieutenant or a General. Sobel went on to have a successful army career.

    Just an FYI - this is the D-Day Invasion. Google it. The Airborne forces were dropped behind the beaches, to prevent German forces reaching the beach. The other group (as you said, Private Ryan) were the sea invasion. Both worked together to win the battle of Normandy/D-Day.

    The interviews at the beginning are the actual soldiers from Eco506. But the producers intentionally do not show their names on screen, so as you go thru the series you don't know in advance who lived thru the war. It's a subtle but very powerful way to show the unknown and uncertainty of war. Today's favorite "character" in the series may be tomorrow's casualty. Or maybe he lives and you're listening to him being interviewed. You just don't know. Intentional tension at it's best.

    Tom Hanks actually helped produce this with Spielberg. I believe right after he did Saving private Ryan. His son is actually in one of the later episodes. Remember in 'Saving" when they were attacking the beach? When in the beginning and the end of this episode when the dude says, "No drop tonight." He is talking about the part in Ryan when they were invading the Beach. It was called "D" day. These paratroopers dropped behind the line while Hanks was invading the Beach. Hanks also helped make "The Pacific" which is the same idea as this but in the Pacific part of the war. It may be even more brutal than this series but most people think "Band" is a little better over all. And later this year, very soon actually, he is releasing a mini series on the Air Force. But it's on some odd channel I don't get and have no plans to pay for.
    Oh Lipton is Donnie Walberg. Marks brother.

    I say this every time because it's truth. This is in some ways my favorite episode because Captain Sobel and "Army noodles with ketchup" are their biggest concerns. While knowing what lies ahead of them. Be prepared to learn, laugh, grow and suffer with these characters. Currahee ♠

    4F designates a person who has been disqualified for military service due to a medical issue.

  • @jaknazryth2488
    @jaknazryth2488 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If a person is 4-F it means they are unfit to serve in the military. Most of the time this is a physical condition, like a bad heart, bone or blood disorder, previous serious surgeries. But it also can be a serious mental condition that prevents someone from joining the service. Serious mental issues from a trainee could serious endanger the life of other troopers, not just the guy with the mental issue. Back in "The Greatest Generation" took personal responsibility more seriously. Imagine being an 18 or 19 year kid so ashamed and dishonored that you commit suicide because you were physically unable to join the armed forces after the attacks of 9/11. Times have changed. You will love this series. These men are well into their 90's and even 100's now. Not many are left.
    Remember that every time you see a really old person. That man could have been a WWII veteran. That generation saved the world from true evil.

    The Airborne division was always meant to be on the ground when the Americans stormed the beaches. The Airborne was meant to provide cover and eliminate German soldiers as they re-treated from the beaches.
