This is strangely refreshing, seeing Thom as a highly confused and insecure youth, talking before thinking and instantly unsure of what comes out, in a deliberately nondescript accent that breaks out in posh tones whenever he gets excited about something and forgets to skip his t's, yet clearly thinking on a scale vastly bigger than he can articulate. I think seeing the flaws of your idols makes them more relatable, it takes them off the pedestal in your mind and reminds you theyre just like you
Its 2020 and he still talks in the very same way and pauses to think before talking . That interview just showed he was always owner of his own thoughts and ideas ( and have been always right about them..).

He does often still just tend to happen, now, still. He sometimes comes off as stroppy, and things just fall out of his face, and I like it tho :3

He's so normal, so genuine. How can one not like him.
He's normally very awkward with his interviews but this interviewer asked INTELLIGENT questions thats why he got through to him. Thom is a genius, you gotta treat him like one...

This is why this man is my hero. He's so incredibly cynical and stubborn, it's captivating. Everything he says is genuine, he seems so utterly honest.....what I would give to have a conversation with him.
I love how his attitude and answers foreshadow his future self. I'm glad he kept on doing his own thing by not giving a crap what the press said. Bless you Thom, wherever you are.
Man, I wish I grew up with Thom. He seems like a really just great, artistic guy.
amazing how a young guy like this and the rest of the group can do such a masterpiece like OK Computer, is legendary, mature, genius. The bends is another masterpiece but not as deep or mature.
OKC is definitely more mature, but The Bends doesn’t shy away from the deep. Planet Telex, Fake Plastic Trees, Street Spirit...

No way he could do this interview today. No media nor record company would want him to be vocal against them so they'd just censor it by either not interviewing or giving him limits and editing the vid etc.
This was done on a camcorder for a fanzine!
I'm sure the final cut they used is mostly edited.

Thom is a truly knowledgable guy. I've noticed a lot, though, that he always doubts himself a little when talking about the media, politics and the environment. He shouldn't, because he's often right. Quite a remarkable man.

This is one of the nicest interview's I've seen with Thom York and a male interviewer.

Thom is so interesting. It's like he sees everything in very personal scenarios that determine how he judges things and i think maybe he's right.

16:00 see, artists are perceptive and he is right. Putting a tiny bandaid on a machete slice with your arm almost off is silly. That's what live aid and all those farm aids and everything else were. Waste of everyone's time and $ while the govt sits back counting their gold bars and investments and arms profits.

My favorite blurb, paraphrased from 13:20ish -

This interviewer seems such a dunce, Thom seems such a cynic already anyway, and you know this is a peep at this process that is endlessly redundant... This is the fishbowl that Thom is forced to swim in, round and round... These seeds of cynicism and this manure that fertilizes it, all again through the years... You can understand the trajectory that he was already in that took him to today. I'm glad he still has passion enough to fight the bullshit and pursue his own expression, even if the bullshit has a part in shaping it.
+HorribleSonofa it's interesting to remember that the first song he ever wrote, when he was like 8 or something, was about a mushroom cloud. He's probably been worrying/frustrated about the state of the world since he was really young. Also, being intelligent, highly sensitive and having depression didn't help the situation. He's a strong person to have made it through all that, with all the incredible pressure and "bullshit" they had to go through.

The Bends was still 7 months aways from release when this interview was done. From then Radiohead have been the best British band since.

Around five minutes in, the interviewer asks a somewhat deep question, and seems geniunely interested in the answer. He obviously wins Yorke's respect there, after he suffered and stuttered through the first minutes (while Yorke looks at him with sarcastic distain)
The interviewer was Paul Prentice of Radiohead World Service Fanzine so he knew his stuff!
it's funny hearing him talk about people listening to music from another generation when I'm always going back to listen to old radiohead and stuff bc I can't find music I injoy in the 2010s beside radiohead and some underground bands
best part about this video is when "Come as You Are" starts playing in the background
