But there is an ongoing debate which country has the oldest anthem mainly because it is complicated to say when something became a national anthem, if it was seen as such, if the constitution recognised it as such and blah blah blah. Most people say that Kimigayo has exited for longer but wasn't seen as the "anthem" of Japan. Most certainly because a "national anthem" is a pretty European concept that was either alien or subjective in places like Asia. Kimigayo was used for a lot of things but people are still debating if it counted as the national "anthem".

I think you are confusing it with Kimigayo which was originally a Poem written between the 8th-12th century and only put to music in the 19th century. Het Wilhelmus however was written around 1568-1572 and the melody for it comes from the song Chartres which was written in 1568 (a version of het Wilhelmus with text and melody stems back to 1574 as far as we know). Given that Kimigayo's lyrics had already been written down by then and that God Save the King/Queen would be officially adopted as the British National Anthem much earlier than het Wilhelmus (which was officially adopted only in 1932) saying it is one of the oldest is correct, but the oldest depends on definition of the term

The French King had hired them for a siege of a town. Mocking songs were made to discourage the other side. Things like: "You think you have strong walls of stone, but they are made of shit, if we piss against them, they flow away like diarrhea!" Usually they used existing melodies with new words. But during this siege a new song was made with a new catching melody. After they won, they went North, where both Orange and Habsburg were hiring for good money. They marched singing their mocking song to show off their victory. Like nowadays the 'new song' became popular. A Dutchman wrote new words to it, praising the Prince, as if the Prince would have sung it himself. The first letter of each couplet spell out his name: Willem van Nassov. With the new text it became very popular and was used everywhere, also in churches and at ceremonies. The march was slowed down to give it more dignity, like every battle march when used in church, or celebration. Together with "Merck toch hoe Sterck" and "In naam van Oranje" the "Wilhelmus" became a national song, joined later with "De Zilvervloot". To serve as Anthem, the music was recomposed. Too slow in my opinion, because now it has the speed of a funeral march.
We remember the national anthem of Wilhelmus in Indonesia a few centuries ago when Indonesia became part of the colony of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
