  • I wrote this Apr 06, 2022 and just now decided to try and play it on my out-of-tune piano. Let me know of ways that I could improve my video quality with my phone.
So, the setting for this piece is that I had just gotten a t-shirt for Christmas that said, "These are difficult times." It then proceeded to list the following time signatures: 5/4, 9/8, and 13/8. Of course, 13/8 is harder than 5/4 and 9/8. But I've written for 5/4 time before, and I thoroughly enjoy it because it makes everything feel edgy--like the Isle of the Dead and the Mission Impossible Theme. But 9/8, I hadn't tried before. And I've seen Adam Neely's TH-cam video on it. So, I decided to try layering polyrhythms on top of an irregular division of 9/8 into three sets of two and one set of three. And that turned into this.

Live performance + hands reveal! And an untuned piano that I can relate to as well (though I use a keyboard nowadays). Great playing too!

I think this can be made into a beautiful piano concerto. Seriously this is some bomb ass piano, this rivals Rachmaninoff in my opinion

The weird thing about my very out of tune piano is that not only this one Eb just not play but the pedals are so loud!! 😭😭😭 I don't even know why. So, the weird ringing sound at the beginning of the score is actually just the sound of me putting my foot on the sustain pedal. I need to get it fixed but I just can't afford it right now. And I'd rather have my bassoon serviced first.

It may be because the phone is recording right on the piano and not at a distance therefore capturing much pedal noise. If a phone is the only device that you can afford to record with, then I have suggestions from viewer experience.

      1. Set the video recording quality to 1920 by 1080p as your video edits are exported at this quality.
      2. Distance the camera a few feet away from the piano for better sound (and less pedal noise). Maybe prop on a tripod to record video. Camera angle may depend on how much you are willing to reveal about yourself (no pressure).
      3. For a simplified easy setup reference, I'd recommend searching for "Waltz of the Rain Performance Hudson Holland Composer" on TH-cam and view the matching video. The way how he propped the camera managed to yield both good sound and video in the room. Another method would be to prop the camera right above the piano where you can see the performer's hands playing. This may also capture a good stereo field (if you know what that is).
      Additional thoughts and opinions:
The piano may be a little flat, but it has great relative pitch that still sounds good when recorded well. It's tolerable unless you have perfect pitch. Recording right on top or near the piano usually yields a poor sound compared to recording a short distance away.
      I hope these suggestions help.
