This play along with a few other was one of the reason I got into my high school. My first assignment for my acting classes was to do a Frankie's monolog from this play. I was ready in two days. Got an A for this back in 84.
Wow thank you for posting this... for so many years i've tried to remember the "movie" where the girl who looked like a boy picked at her foot with a knife. I always pictured her sitting on a porch but now I can see that's just how the set was built. I couldn't remember who was in it or really much of what it was about (I was very young) but, something about the girl stood out so clearly in my memory. I really thought I had dreamed it. Watching it again today I can see why it stayed in my memory. Dana Hill was a wonderful actress taken from us far to soon... such a very sad loss.
Pearl Bailey was and remains so glamorous, generous, & so much much bigger than life all around... It truly is fascinating to see her immerse herself in the frumpy understated role of Bernice, and positively inhabit such a humble, simple but sly and earthbound character...

I believe that I saw this when it aired. I wish that there was a regular broadcast of live plays and musicals. Especially since Broadway and other theaters have had to shut down due to Covid. Maybe the idea will catch on.
I really enjoyed her performances. Quite a talented young lady. Her passing at the age of only 32 (from a stroke due to complications from diabetes) was so tragic & heartbreaking. 😞
I thought the same exact thing, she was such a talented woman.Maybe someone will do her life story, and without a doubt Queen Latifah could definitely do the role Justice.

Indeed. She was a truly great author. Also wrote the novels "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" & "Reflections in a Golden Eye". Also, many short stories and the novella "Ballad of the Sad Cafe". She also adapted "Sad Cafe" for the stage and wrote the play "The Square Root of Wonderful". She was in frail health for most of her life & died after a series of strokes in 1967 at the age of 50.
Another demeaning show for black folks to be grateful for. The writer may have been good, but boy, was she insulting and condescending, and well aware that her content would be so welcome. On a side note, Howard Rollins was one pretty black man.

Thank You so much for uploading this. This aired on television way back in the early 80s and I have been looking for it ever since

Remember the days when the word "Queer" only meant strange and unusual and didn't pertain to a person's sexual orientation?
Like “gay” meant extremely happy & was rarely used.
@@ElleBrOw that's the reason I dont call homosexuality "gay"
@@Soul_Education Yes, because there’s nothing gay about homosexuality.

The silence of the audience during the opening credits is eerie. It’s an odd choice for a live TV taping
Based on novel by Carson McCullers.

🤤Wow.. the "eye" patch...it's always been here, now, however, we are waking up 🤔👊🏾👊🏾
Good actors are them all? That little one is something to recon with? With that mouth.
Julie Harris ruined the role for any other actor both on stage and the screen and Bernice IS Ethel Waters.
Watch the original with Julie Harris, Ethel Waters and Brandon de Wilde. It's much, much better.
