    Added benefit of saving seeds is that the next generation of plants will be more acclimated to your climate and soil growing conditions!

    I have a "perennial" bed of Parsley. It goes to seed each fall, and the seeds drop off to the ground. Late fall I cut off all of the plant tops and clean the bed, the next spring new plants sprout and start a new season with plenty of Parsley to harvest all summer long.

      @@Warrior-In-the-Garden Yes, for over a decade. However, last summer it got invaded by the bindweed, and it is going to be difficult to get that out without totally redoing the area.

    I saved seeds from EVERYTHING I grew this year. I had bought all my seeds last fall (2019) to plant this spring & suddenly there were no seeds available! I was so thankful because I was able to grow seedlings for my parents, my sister & my best friend. It was my first time starting seeds & I had bought many packets from *MI Gardener* - they were awesome & produced beyond my wildest dreams! Thank you Luke - the knowledge you teach & the inspiration you ignite, is purely awesome!

    Growing from seed is so much fun and satisfying. This was my first year gardening and saving any seeds. I decided to try growing some herbs indoors for the winter and was delighted when the chive seeds I had harvested started to come up. 😊

    Thank you for this video. It has inspired me to challenge my daughter to save seeds this year. We just put together our seed order including potatoes, ginger and tumeric and it was $400. Perhaps with a seed saving plan we can harvest the majority of our own seeds in 2021! Again, thank you!

    My neighbor turned me on to your seeds. She started many tomato plants and gave me 4. They went nuts and gave way more tomatoes than I could handle. That's including canning 3 laundry baskets full. I'm going to plant half my garden with your seeds next year.

    The botanical term for that "flower type", aka cluster of flowers, flower head or inflorescence is a compound umbel. It's characteristic of most members of the carrot family, Apiaceae. You can use it to spot relatives from a distance. Use caution though some carrot family members are deadly toxic.

    Nice video. Currently, to my surprise, the rosemary and the thyme remain flourishing. When the dill went to seed I let it go. Next year I think there will be thousands of dill in that space. Also today I saw the broccoli continues trying in the makeshift housing I made. Today I ate some of the broccoli. There is far less insects during the cold weather. 😀 Also late I planted arugula, radishes and kale. Then built a little Quonset over that area. I've put lots of fallen leaves around and over the Quonset and yesterday clearing it off I see the plants are growing. Now I'm trying to figure out how to improve that. Also I saw lots of worms in the soil under bale cover used to winter over the area. I'm not sure but am thinking the bale will keep the area warm, kind of like a pile of leaves does. Not sure though. Thank you for your inspirations, despite already having had a few below freezing days and nights. Garden on....

    THANK YOU!!! I’m new to gardening but I’ve had a potted Parsley plant for 2yrs that’s got a large flower stalk on it with multiple flower head branch things on it. Only recently learned I can get seeds from it!! I’ve recently gotten tiny mylar bags & O2 absorbers so I can store seeds long term as my new plants seed & also buying & storing them long term… I’m shocked by how many seeds came out of that one flower head!!! 😃😃 That’s amazing & has me very excited!!! 😃😃
    BTW, will storing any kind of seeds in mini mylar bags, totally light blocking with a O2 absorber work for storing seeds long term? Or would a O2 absorber kill the seeds & should I do it without? O2 absorbers don’t kill off nutrients in foods, if anything it helps increase it but unsure if seeds are different? Would really appreciate your knowledge on it? 😁🙏

    Hi Luke! I was wondering if bagging the flower with a mesh bag, or a light fabric bag, is a feasible technique to catch seeds. I'd be afraid I'd miss the perfect time, and the seeds would fall to the ground. The seeds are so tiny that I'd guess they can't practically be picked up out of the dirt. Thanks for your time!

      Liliana Roman I think you should have left it in the ground to overwinter outside. It you are concerned about BITTER COLD, then you could cover it with dry straw (hay tends to be seedy) and uncover it in spring. Parsley is surprisingly winter hardy if it has good drainage.

  • @peterslim
    @peterslim 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's great to save seeds. If you plan to to use a certain seed you love to grow is there an actual advantage to using organic? The genetics would be the same. The only small advantages is the potential for harmful chemicals on the seeds themselves which are quite small. The food grown from them would be the same under the same conditions. I would rather eat organic mainly because of the lack of chemicals they are grown in and the fact they protect the soil which affects the plants and the environment. The seeds themselves, if they are the same cultivar, make a negligible difference.
