    I inherited an old ball pein hammer from my father and did a very similar job. I was able to keep the old handle and sanded it to freshen the colour, coating it two or three times with gunstock oil to show the grain. I did the same with an old wooden-handled carpenter's screwdriver from my grandfather.
    Old tools are old friends. They have a story to tell. And they have earned the right to be respected.

      @@caribmedical57 I have to say, the hammer head looks nice but the way he fit the handle is definitely not the right way to do it. He should have used a wooden wedge hammered down into a slot cut in the handle, then a metal wedge if needed

    • @fewwiggle
      @fewwiggle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raygillies3853 How do you know when the metal wedge is necessary? IOW, wouldn't that just mean that you did it wrong and you should start over?

    • @raygillies3853
      @raygillies3853 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fewwiggle The metal wedge would be necessary in much heavier tools such as big felling axes and sledgehammers where the fit between the handle and head just can't be too tight. You can also use metal wedges when you have a hammer that is starting to loosen up which can make the hammer last longer. The metal wedge my mechanics used is far too large for a small hammer like that which causes the big cracks you can see at the top of the head, I'd use a much smaller metal wedge if I needed it.
      Personally, I would start with a new handle because the fit between the one my mechanics used and his hammer head isn't tight enough. The handle should be hammered into the head with a mallet which due to the tightness of the fit. But a slot (or kerf) should be cut down the long axis of the handle at a rough depth of 2/3 of the hammer head's height. The kerf is cut so that a wooden wedge can be driven in with a mallet (using wood glue if you wish) which expands the wood outwards, holding onto the head tighter.
      Furthermore, the handle should stick out around 3mm or so from the top of the head because when the wooden wedge is inserted, it expands the wood creating a fit almost similar to a mattock.

    If you want to give a color to your handles without staining them use filtered used motor oil. I used it on a hand saw handle and it worked great, but you might want to give it a few days to soak in if you don't want it to smell bad.

    • @JGilbertMetal
      @JGilbertMetal ปีที่แล้ว

      If the smell bothers you, the color is from the metal filings and carbon soot the oil absorbed during use, you can get similar results by mixing graphite or other processed metal powder and/or charcoal with unused oil and it won't have the smell. :)

    As always a superb restoration. The final product was better than when it was new. But here is a suggestion for another restoration. Restore that chisel you use to knock out the handle. It is in bad condition..

    Curious why you didn't hot blue the head?

    • @mymechanicsinsights
      @mymechanicsinsights  4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Hammer heads are heat treated. They're not super hard as I was able to file them, but the file was gone after two hammer heads. If I'd heat them up for hot bluing, that would be enough to ruin the heat treatment.
