I am an older gentleman, maybe a little older than you judging by the amount of gray hair or lack thereof. Welcome to the world of IU. If you decide to continue on your path of discovery, it will be well worth your time. I discovered IU through the kdrama My Mister, her portrayal of that character haunted me while watching the 16 episode drama (Netflix) that I actually would go to bed worrying about her. It was only after I looked her that I discovered she was a singer as well, and that truly started me on my journey some 3 years ago. Below I have provided some background info on her to help you get started on your journey. She did debut at the age of 15 after 10 months of training (a relatively short period). She had been rejected in 20 prior auditions before finally being signed by a small agency at the age of 14. She started auditioning when she was 13. In an interview while waiting to audition for one of the largest agency, her pose and confidence were on full display. Her answer to one on of the questions sums up who she is, when asked how she would feel if she was rejected at this audition, she replied that she would give her best effort and if she was rejected that would be ok because she knew she would eventually succeed and she would never give up. She has become the most successful singer in Korea. She has had over 35 number 1 hit singles, twice as many as the next nearest soloist or group. Her songs have been on the charts for almost 700 weeks. In 2014 she took over control of her music and from that time she has written most of her own songs, composed many of them and produced her albums. She has won awards for Singer of the Year, Artist ofvthe Year, Song Writer of the Year, Producer of the year, Song of the Year etc and this doesn't include her Acting awards. The Blueming video you reacted to is from her 2019 Love Poem tour. This is concert was held in the Seoul Olympic Gymnasium arena. She became to first artist to hold a concert there with 360 degree stage. She performed 2 nights and the 28,000 tickets sold out in 10 minutes. This past Sept she held her first concert since that one, because of Covid, and she held a 2 day concert at the Seoul Olympic stadium, becoming the first Korean female artist to headline a concert their, which is the largest concert venue in Seoul. A total of 90,000 tickets were available and sold out in 30 minutes with just under half a million people still waiting in the queue online. In 2014 after the Kpop Convention held in LA the New York wrote that IU was leading the way forward for the kpop industry. In 2018 the New York Times had a piece about the influence of music on culture and they composed a list of the top 25 most influential artist. IU was listed at number 9. Then in January of this year Rolling Stone Magazine released an update to their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. IU became the first Korean to make the list at number 135. JK of BTS also made the list at number 191. She is one of the truly rare singers who actually sound better live than recorded and she sounds great recorded. Many of her songs are telling a story or making a point. And her MV's become important because through them she is able to more fully tell the story. There are filled with metaphors and symbolism that add depth and deeper meaning to her songs and she often uses 2 or more songs to build a complete story that might take years to complete (I know of no other artist who has ever done this). So some of her songs are best listened to in the correct order to fully understand the story. During her professional career IU has known some tragedy. She has lost 3 good and close friends to suicide. Junghyun of Shinee in 2017, one of her best friends Sulli in the fall of 2019 just before she started the Live Poem concert and Goo Hara some 30 days later. IU actually hear if Goo's death during her last Love Poem concert in Seoul and had a difficult time finishing the concert. In May of 2020 released her song Eight (feat. and Produced by Suga of BTS). IU wrote the lyrics and and melody. The song and the MV tell of the struggle IU went through in dealing with lost of these precious souls. The MV is very deep, so much so that there are actually explanation videos on TH-cam that explain them. Most of these are pretty go but they all fail in catching all the meaning of the metaphors and imagery. IU is a special person. As another actor stated a couple of years ago, "she was born under a star". This statement confirmed and put into words what I was feeling about her. Her voice, smile, presence has the power to heal souls and give you a little hope that their is goodness in the world. Prehaps one of the best ways to get to know IU is through her performance on Dingo Music Killer Voice where she performs a melody of some of her songs she performed during her 20's. She turns 30 this coming May. In addition to her live performances and MVs she puts out a lot of content on her own channels (IU Offical, IU TV etc) where there are behind the scenes videos of her CV concerts and making of her MV's. It is through these that you get a deeper understanding of who she is . She also has a show on TH-cam called Palette where she interviews other kpop artist and they cover eachother songs. Being young people with scholarships from IU . Since the studio where the program is recorded is a place where low-income youth can learn music for free.
