My name is Xanthe.
I decided to record a video, even though I have been unwell with cold/flu virus. Have a fan going in the background, as it's hot in summer.
My skintone is medium, warm-leaning neutral 'olive'. However, I look grey instead of my usual glow. I posted the video anyway.
I look greyer than usual in this video because:
1. This is 'pallor' from illness, when less circulation to the skin
2. Not wearing a colour which suits me best
3. I tried a different lighting set up which was a fail with my low spec camera. Unfortunately, I don't have much space or finances for lighting etc. My room is cramped and the darkest room from the house.
1 & 3 are actually the biggest factors, I think.
All of the colours in the room are greyer and cooler that they would look in better quality lighting. Definitely a challenge as an artist.
The art and science of colour is one of my lifetime interests.
In this video, I compared two red lipsticks, a primary yet soft red (my usual). Plus a darker, cooler red. Plus applied quickly some light makeup to show how I might look a little less ill. Unfortunately, it's not that great with the poor colours in the video.
Also showed a portrait I have been working on. Been having a rest from it.
Talked about colour theory and colour analysis. One of the biggest factors with colour is actually the lighting.
As an artist who specialises in painting with acrylics, 3 primary colours are not enough for high chroma all around the hues of the colour wheel. I would actually choose 5-6, spread out. Plus white and a dark brown to mix black.
The 3D colour wheel globe model is a Kolormondo® Mini. I bought it online. Saw colour educator Pete @ColorNerd1 demonstrating one. I've never actually bought a colour wheel before. I think it's generally more useful to mix your own.
I offer a custom virtual colour analysis service (not 'seasonal'). The lighting requirements are important though, for the comparisons to have any validity.
