During the last rites of a family member, Hindu males shave their head also termed as tonsuring. This is a mark of mourning and also show of respect. For a few days after the last rites, all members of the family eat a very different, simple vegetarian food.

Reminds me of a Quora Post a read a while ago of a soldier writing about the experience of the night before his first battle...
' Being part of a big army going into combat you feel big and tiny at the same time. Fate is out of your hands and you can just hope and pray that tomorrow at the same time you will still be alive. You look around and watch your comrades.. Some of them won’t come back.'

Prahlad's food was different from others because in sanatan dharma ' after the death of any relative, a person like father, son or brother of that dead person has to perform all the spiritual offerings and procedures spanning around 20 days from the death of the person.
The person that perform all the functions is called (KARTA) and he has to eat no-salt food till 14 days from the date of the death.
KARTA also has to eat only vegetarian food, mostly fruits or milk, etc. for 14 days.
He has to shave his head on the day of HAJAMAT( 11th day from the death).
Every family member should also not eat food made with oil,turmeric,non-veg,roti,etc.on 11th day, family members can start eating these foods too but only vegetarian food.
Every family member except woman also has to shave their heads on HAJAMAT.

In Hinduism there are many rituals performed after anyone's death. As seen in the episode we burn the body. In the name of the person died we do charity so it adds to their good deeds n his or her soul n travel peacefully. Have to eat Simple food. We don't celebrate anything for a year. A year later on the death anniversary a pooja is performed poor are fed. Also charity is given n this marks the year. It's normal life after that. Also to mention we every do pind daan or offering to all over ancestors passed kind of like the coco movie.

This is how in villages and small towns we welcome our martyr heroes. It hurts when people sitting in big cities and AC bedrooms talk about the fact that we should keep politics and "Art" Separate supporting Pakistani Artists.
I understand that Pakistani artists has nothing to do with this. But as a citizen we can support our soldiers by simply not letting Pakistani artists into our country as a symbol of protest. This will also indirectly pressurize their State to take action against terrorist outfits.
It's not their (our soldiers) personal fight either. And as a citizen we should pressurize their citizens symbolically.

Oh my god, there needs to be some sort of warning that the last episode of season 2 of Panchayat is extremely emotional & can trigger trauma & stress. As someone who’s a vet and probably has seen a lot of friends/colleagues injured and KIA, I hope this did not trigger a lot of painful memories. To answer some of your questions:
    1. When a death happens in a Hindu family, it is customary for the father/son to shave the head/beard and mustache before lighting the funeral pyre
    2. The strength of the Indian Army is like all armies, it’s infantry, mechanized units and land regiments. Majority of those regiments and battalion squads are made of small town and village boys barely out of their teens and in their 20s.
    3. The army in India is a highly respected institution & is the source of employment for many hundreds of thousands of young Indians who are proud to join the institution. The army feeds them, clothes them and educates them.
    4. Most villages as you probably have gleaned, are close knit society. Everyone knows everyone else really well and each village has a deep sense of community, family and society. So when a loss happens in one family it affects everyone & there is massive outpouring of grief. Celebrations and grief in India are never ever private family affairs.

It will be interesting to see what Season 3 brings and how the people (mainly the father) processes this horrible loss. ..I wonder when Season 3 will even be released though. now i will tell u in detail about what happens when someone close dies ?
1)there is a strict regime for the people of the family for 13 days.. they have to eat food without any spices or anything and the closest member has to eat fruits and milk only like if a women dies her husband will eat fruits and if a father dies his son will eat fruit
2)there will be a priest who will come everyday to perform the rituals and after completing them he tells about what would happen after life by reading from Garud puran(a book which tells about after life journey)
    3) for 13 days generally the closest one wears almost a single piece of cloth like a vest and a dhoti(a piece of cloth tied around the waist) i remember last year in winters when my grand dad died everyone was wearing jackets except my dad
    4) for 1 year you cannot celebrate any festivals even ur birthday as u also know that here in india there is a festival in every month
    5) for 13 days u are considered as impure so u cannot visit any holy occasion like marriages etc
6)at the end of 13th day u can eat any food or go any where
7)there are some rules for women if there husband dies .. like they have to remove there mangal sutra(it is a necklace of gold which is put by a husband on her wife at the time of marriage)
8)the women has to stop wearing the vermillion on her head(it is red powder which is wore only by married women)
9)women has to dress in white for her entire life(though this one is flexible)
10)women has to shave off their head(This one is also flexible)
11)women cannot wear any jewellery (this is also flexible)

    • @UKpowerunleashed

The impure thing is wrong. You are not considered impure. It's more like you have lost someone and a celebratory occasion such as a marriage function where everybody is in a singing and dancing mood is not really... You know...
I mean the reverse is also true, like if someone has had a marriage in their house, they are forbidden to visit the house of someone where somebody has very recently died.
Also, in Indian culture (and many young or old indians don't know this because they never care to ask the priest all the whys and the whats), the whole post death ritual from day 0 to 13 onwards is considered like a holy ritual. People in India just grew up thinking that all this is out of "impurity" sentiment. But the opposite is true. Because the person is performing rituals for the dead, that's why he has to be shaven, eat food that are not palate pleasing (tasty food is also considered one of the pleasures), something to just be enough for energy sustenance, not sleep on a comfortable bed etc because its like a tapasya (idk how to translate that word).
So basically, it's the family of the dead who are the pure ones because they are on a spiritual journey for 13 days, saying goodbye to the dead one for the soul is preparing for an after life journey.
That's what the priests have told me when I asked them about this physically and mentally challenging ritual.

My family follows rules like after knowing about the Death, we dont take bath until the body is burnt. Then upto 10 days we don't shave or do haircut and on the 10th day, we get completely Clean shaven.
Also until the Prayer Rites done on 11th, we eat a meal only once a day and the food is cooked without any Spices except Salt, children or old people can just eat snacks if they feel hungry afterwards.
Also no nonveg until 11th day even though its optional to eat on that day depending on people's budget sometimes as the family has to organise a feast for Priests and other Relatives, Friends and Neighbours but Fish is made compulsory on the 12th day when everyone has to eat it.
