Johann Sebastian Bach's "Goldberg Variations," BWV 988, begins with the serene and beautifully crafted Aria. Composed in 1741, this piece was reportedly commissioned by Count Kaiserling, who suffered from insomnia, for his harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg to play during sleepless nights-hence the name "Goldberg Variations."
The Aria is characterized by its graceful melody and rich harmonic structure, setting the stage for the 30 variations that follow. Interestingly, the Aria's melody is believed to be based on a sarabande from Bach's earlier Anna Magdalena Notebook, showcasing his habit of reworking musical ideas. Some suggest that Bach encoded messages and numerical symbolism within the music, reflecting his interest in numerology and theology.
David Huang's interpretation brings out the nuanced details and expressive power of Bach's music, making this performance a standout.
