- One of many sulphur dun mayfly patterns, this one was created by George Harvey of Pennsylvania. Vary the body slightly to match the sulphurs in your area-- from pale yellow to a slightly more orange.
Hook: #12-16 dry fly
Tail: White or cream hackle fibers
Body: Sulphur yellow or orange dubbing
Wing: White or cream hackle tips
Hackle: Cream or barred ginger

A wonderful & effective fly anytime when light colored flies are around. It’s highly visible which is quite helpful for fishing heavily shaded areas or at dusk.

Good Morning Sir Matt, I've been seeing alot of sulfur color mayflies even here in Texas as of late. I haven't been on the water yet this year but hope to soon. I've been doing alot of cooks (smoked bar b que) a little idea I had is opening up a business called Bar B Que and Flies. People could eat some great food and watch Savage Flies and others on a big screen and even have a fly tying station with guest showing there skills. Have a great weekend Sir Matt 😀 Thank You.

Great fly. I fished these and PMD's on Lockwood Gorge on the South Branch of the Raritan during June when I lived in Jersey and fished there.
A favorite of fly-fishers. Before I tied flies my son and I would stop at Shannon's Fly shop in Califon and get a dozen as well as the nymphs. Never failed to get some trout.

Morning Matt. Love these flies. If you're going to fish it, try a size 12-14 Dun then tie a 12-18" tippet with size 18-20 gnat. Have a blessed day.

Nice dry fly Matt, more and more dry flies are going the deer or cdc route now and you rarely see a hackled dry unless it's an old pattern, that's probably due to the cost of a decent cape though. I still prefer the traditional hackled dries myself and I have a few old skool British patterns I would love to see you tie and try over there. Kites imperial, tups indispensable, Greenwells glory and wickhams fancy. Those four should rock your boat with the history and materials used and if you could film yourself collecting the dubbing for the tups it would be a great laugh 😂😂 enjoy your weekend at the farm friend 🙂
Don’t forget the female dry Hendrickson which requires pinkish, urine-stained fur from a female fox. ;-) It’s quite hard to get her to sit still for the haircut.

I love these older looking styles of Flys. To me, they represent class and respect. I'm guess the materials & devices that people had in them days, would be a little bit rugged to work with. Yet, they produce these Flys that show respect and integrity. Thanks Matt!

We are supposed to be getting some much needed rain here this weekend according to the forecast but I’ll believe it when I see it on the ground or in the gauge. That should work well around here during the mayfly hatch.
Sulphurs are a fun time of the year. Just have both the yellowish and orangish shades available in sizes 14 to 18...but if I had to pick one, it would be the creamy in 16.
We have good sulphur hatch's here along with PMD hatch's one of my favs here

Ive got Harvey’s book, and have tied his Night Fly.
It’s a pretty neat idea and has some wide application outside of trout fishing.
He was also a pioneer in the use of light rods and leaders, and was pretty much the first to make fly fishing into a textbook endeavor.
He started the first fly fishing classes, and had them in the curriculum of Penn State!
As Gerry Korzi says, “You should pay attention if it comes from a Pennsylvania angler.”

I like the simple patterns and yes the entomology of the mayfly is a little strange. It is more confusing to me to tie the names of the mayfly to the finished fly used.

Have you had a chance to fish with one of those Apache Lady flies you tied a while back? They work really well under an indicator or a hopper with a little drop shot here in Arizonia.
