      Despite few inaccuracies your effort is really commendable. Heck I was surprised you actually bothered to put disclaimer on a vid released few years ago.
      If you feel bad just remember that in the English version of the game Dynasty Warriors, Koei dubbed Cao Cao as "Cow Cow" and only corrected it after several launches of the sequels. 🙃

    What people need to understand, is that less then 1% of those who tried actually passed the Imperial examination.
    Hong Xiuquans family used to held scholary positions during the Ming dynasty. This placed a heavy burden upon Xiuquans shoulders as they expected him to restore his family's lost honor. At the same time, you have a system that heavily favors those of Manchu decent or those with deep connections within the Qing administration. Hong Xiuquan's familiy were of Hakka descent, a sub group of Han chinese. Which did not help him at the examination, as many families often used their wealth in order to gain an advantage at the examination. It was either that way, or you had to be extraordinary gifted, which Hong Xiuquan unfortunately wasn't.

      There is nothing ancient about it. The devastating effect of Taiping and Boxer Rebellions are some of the the core reasons behind modern China's preference of any native regime over any form of government with Western influence no matter how benign: the last and only time Westerners influenced Chinese politics and culture, the most devastating crisis in Chinese history in term of regional loss of lives happened (Taiping Rebellion and to a lesser extent Boxer Rebellion). I suspect these 18th century and early 19th century crisis caused by Western mostly British Imperial activities dwarfed the Communist mismanagement of China during 1950s to 1980s, and I think that's the answer to the puzzling Chinese psyche: will follow CCP despite all the devastation early communists caused with their nonsensical murderous policies but are absolutely terrified of infiltration of any Western ideas. Again. Notice how modern China want to do business with the world and has been the biggest beneficiary of doing business with the West but, are, at the same time, absolutely stone wall against any form of political integration with the West no matter how minor or benign or beneficial/convenient it is to themselves.

      @@pypy1986820You are out of your mind , the western missionary didn’t started the rebellion . Nor did they preached of rebellion and overthrow of the Ching imperial court . Hung’s claiming himself as Jesus brother also violate Christian teaching . It was hung’s own ambition that started the civil war . Religion was just an excuse for him to draw people into his cause. Just like the yellow turban rebellion . I am a Christian and a Chinese. What you said is quite offensive and kind of a whitewash to what the communist have done .

This video is phenomenal. I had a question too, the music that start's at 2:06 really captured the mood of the scene, especially since you soon mention Hong Xiuquan who at this point was still a young intellectual mind attempting to find his way though Chinese society in his initial attempts and being an imperial scholar. Do you have a reference to the song or music in question? I'd highly appreciate it.

His brothers locked him in his room so he couldn't get out and he ran around and jumped on the bed and sang songs killing imaginary demons with an imaginary sword and talisman. Too many TH-cam presenters make this mistake and in most cases it thoroughly ruins what would otherwise be good material - wasting the viewers' time and their own. I would like to see you take down all your videos and start again - without the music, or at least turn it right down so that it is the music that is hard to hear and not your voice. We know what Chinese music sounds like - we don't know about your subject and want to know, otherwise we wouldn't go to it. I'm not well-versed in Chinese history or culture but I couldn't help but notice that the rebels (such as at 7:20 and 7:30 in the video) appear to wear a lot of yellow. I am aware of a prior revolt, the Yellow Turban Rebellion around 190 CE. Is yellow a color often associated with popular revolts in Chinese culture? Is there a reason for it?

    Well made video but I couldn't help notice that you used pictures which are associated with the Yellow Bandit Rebellion (188 AD) ? Am I right or do those pictures coincidentally depict men wearing yellow ? Or is it because of a lack of pictures directly associated to the Taiping rebellion ?

    • @History_of_China
      @History_of_China  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, well, many picture were associatedd with both rebellions, probably because the rebels wore somewhat similar head gear. But I must admit the images I could find were scarce, so I wasn't always sure they originally depicted the Taipings specifically :)

    • @mistergeopolitics4456
      @mistergeopolitics4456 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@History_of_China Yes that's what I thought. I'm sure you could find more authentic images, however it would understandably take an excessive amount of digging & time. I also wonder if the Taiping rebels were in any way inspired by the yellow Turban rebellion ? In a sense it's unlikely because of the distant time frames however it's likely that rebels & highway bandits wore the same attire until recent the recent modernization / globalization period where everyone wears jeans. LOL. In any case, thank you for replying & keep up the great work, your channel will become very popular soon, I'm sure.

      The Taiping Tianguo rebellion was very much part of the tradition of the Yellow Turbans at the end of the Han dynasty -- their very name, "Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace" was literally taken from the phrases of the Yellow Turban, and the idea of Great Peace remains a central tenant of groups such as Falun Dafa (one of the reasons the Chinese government has repressed it).

    • @mistergeopolitics4456
      @mistergeopolitics4456 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jagvillani338 There may be some links & perhaps the leaders of the Taiping decided to associate themselves with the yellow turban rebellion as a way to garnering legitimacy ? however it must be noted that both rebellions were 1600 years apart. That is a long time.

    Did the Taiping Religion die after this rebellion? Are there any believers alive today? You'd think if tens of millions of people a century and a half believed that Jesus's brother was alive, some of those beliefs would linger.

    • @AlexKS1992

    Hong Xiuquan who thought he was actually the brother of Jesus Christ himself led a deadliest Taiping rebellion in 1850-1864. He had half a million followers in the peasant war ever fought in China worse than the famous Boxer's Rebellion in 1900.

    My surname, had our family come to Australia a bit later when Mandarin rather than Cantonese was the model for anglicising, would be Hong. The Hakka version is Fung (Hung/Hong was a Hakka) and I have been in touch with someone I refer to as Cousin Roy who actually can show a continuing link back to the Taipings.

    I'm not a mouthpiece for the CCP, nor am I in favor of the current regime in China. However, anyone who thinks the CCP is unreasonably tyrannical or oppressive when it comes to their policies regarding the practice of organized religions like Christianity in its own state needs to educate himself with this chapter in China's modern history. The CCP has every incentive to keep the practice as well as the spread of such religious practices in check for the sake of the state's stability.

    As Jesus said: "Watch and be aware, that u wont be ensnared! Because many will come under MY NAME and say: its ME (Jesus, the mesiah, gods brother etc.), and the time has come! DONT FOLLOW THEM! And if u hear of wars and uprisings, dont be suprised or scared about it. Because this has to happen first, but the end wont come that fast. And then he said to them: And there will rise nation against nation and kingdom against kindom, and big earthquakes and on several places famines and epidemics/plagues, also scary things and big signs from the sky. But before all this they will get their hands on u and persecute u, getting u to the synagoges and prisons to get u in front of kings and governors because of my name. It will become a testimony though." (Luke, 21 8-13) Dude, did he remain right! Jesus still MVP.
