We moved from Newcastle when I was 6 years old - in 1971. We lived in Barmston Village. Washington in 1970s was clean, landscaped and an exciting, developing town. "Washington New Town" ultimately failed because control was shifted to Sunderland - an authority with no real vision for us. Add Thatcher who came to power in 1979 - a leader, like all that followed - who failed to invest in the North East.
Now I live in Central Mexico, been here 8 years.
    I'm still from Washington though.

Being an expat from Washington. I lived in a pit house with a view of Pensher monument. We went to the Usworth sports day and my sister was in the Washington Grays marching band.
I really enjoyed this video 👍

Thanks for watching! I helped make this with a close friend of mine a few years back. Just happy someone from Washington has enjoyed the video 😊

Grew up in Blackfell in the 80's & 90's. the jazz bands, the pre-fab maisonettes, the place was a bit of a shit hole when they moved everyone out of the maisonettes, not a night went by when one wasn't on fire. Sounds grim but I've got fond memories of growing up there and it was what we knew. Id go back to those care free days anytime.

I was brought up what was called the Flat Tops Douglas Terrace outside toilets no bathroom one bedroom for my parents and five children. Dad worked at Washington pits and used a tin bath in front of the fire 🔥 to get washed. We were surrounded by fields grandad would take us to go and see the pit pony’s and five then bread. I loved it happy childhood St Beads school at the top of street which I hated for my first year there we only had none flush toilets just a hole in a wooden board so when new toilets were built the following year we thought it was heaven. I saw the coach Road EST being built opposite our street we used to go and play on the site. A little girl was killed when a tiled fireplace fell on her there was no health and safety then. I look back with great happiness we dident feel we were missing out on anything.🇬🇧🙏😍😘💋

Washington has really gone downhill. Don't think the paths have had any maintenance on 30 years since I left.
